Johnny Harris (Fortitude, This Is England and Snow White And The Huntsmen), Richard Rankin (The Crimson Field, The Syndicate, Silent Witness) and Luke Newberry (In The Flesh, Lightfields, Quartet), will star alongside previously announced Anne-Marie Duff (Shameless, Nowhere Boy, The Virgin Queen) in BBC One’s new psychological crime drama, From Darkness.

They will be joined by Caroline Lee Johnson (Chef, The Knock) Lyndsey Marshall (The Hours, Hereafter), Adrian Rawlings (Harry Potter, Prisoners Wives), Ben Batt (Shameless, The Village) and Leanne Best (The Woman In Black 2: Angel Of Death, Ripper Street).

Written by Katie Baxendale (Sugar Rush) and directed by Dominic Leclerc (Call The Midwife, The Syndicate, The Village), From Darkness tells the story of ex-police officer Claire Church (Anne-Marie Duff). In attempt to escape the past and the violence that still haunts her, Claire moved away to the remote Western Isles, to start a new life with her partner Norrie, and daughter Megan.

Richard Rankin, who will play Norrie, says: "I’m excited to be working on another great BBC drama. Excellent script, excellent team. Especially looking forward to working with Dominic Leclerc again."

Claire is pulled back into an investigation she thought she long left behind, by her former lover and colleague DCI John Hind (Johnny Harris) and his new DS, Anthony Boyce (Luke Newberry), leaving her forced to confront the very darkness she has run from.

Johnny Harris, who plays John, says: "I couldn't have wished for a more exciting script or project to be involved in. Anne-Marie Duff is an exceptional actress and I'm delighted to be on board."

Luke Newberry says: "Katie Baxendale has written a gripping and complex human drama, and Boyce goes on a remarkable journey of self-discovery."

From Darkness was developed by BBC Drama North from an original pitch as part of a BBC Writersroom scheme and is distributed by BBC Worldwide. Hilary Martin, Head of BBC Drama North, and Oliver Kent are the executive producers, and the producer is Helen Ziegler. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One and Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning.
