Naomi in action
Needles and Spins
Digital downloads and MP3s have taken over the mainstream music industry. But Naomi Kashiwagi from Manchester is turning the tables on new music and performs a unique music mix using 78s and wind-up gramophones.
As technology moves on, the way we listen to music changes. The players are lighter and smaller. You can't even see the music in its digital form. So local artist Naomi Kashiwagi has turned to obsolete formats to perform in public.
Using two wind-up gramophones and her collection of 78rpm shellac records, Naomi has performed in a number of venues around the city playing a mix of music from twenties jazz to fifties rock and roll.
Naomi has discovered that when it comes to listening to our favourite tunes, some things never change. So is it art or is it music? Naomi's performances are challenging our perceptions of both.
