Tim's homework

Yesterday we learned that improving your awareness of native-speaker pronunciation can be good for your listening skills. Did you get the answers to Tim's questions?

  • The word 'can' is pronounced in two different ways: /kæn/ and /kən/. /kæn/ is the 'strong form' and /kən/ is the 'weak form'.
  • The correct option was a) the stress in the sentence.

We use the strong form when 'can' is the word that's stressed in the sentence. We use the weak form when it isn't stressed. It's important to be able to recognise these features of connected speech because it will help make you a better listener.

How did you do in that task? We hope it went well!

Today we'll be listening for specific information. Remember, you don't need to listen for every detail of everything you hear. If you know what information you need, you can focus on it.

Listening task

You're going to watch an episode of Bad Dates. Listen for Amanda’s description of Daniel. What type of language do you think you should listen for? Probably adjectives for description. Make a note of the ways Amanda describes Daniel. Compare your list with Tim's tomorrow.
