Hello everyone! Tom here from BBC Learning English in London. I'm going to explain the expression 'used to'.

'Used to' describes repeated actions or habits in the past.

For example, 'I used to play football after school'.

And it can also describe states or things that happened over a long period of time.

For example, I used to live in Japan.

We can also use 'used to' in the negative form, we just add 'did not' or 'didn't'.

Using our first example, I could say 'I didn't use to play football'.

But be careful! With negative and question forms, we don't include 'd' at the end of 'used'.

We use 'used to' to describe past habits and states.
आपण आपल्या सवयी, एखादी परिस्थिती दाखवण्यासाठी 'used to' वापरतो.

We use 'used to' to emphasise that something happened regularly or over a long period of time.
एखाद्या गोष्टीतली नियमीतता किंवा एखादी गोष्ट दीर्घकाळ घडत होती हे सांगण्यासाठी 'used to' वापरतात.

When I was a child, I used to play in the park.
I used to be a very happy child.

When I was a child, I used to play in the park.
I used to be a very happy child.

We often use 'used to' to compare the past with the present, or to talk about how things have changed.
भूतकाळ आणि वर्तमानाची  तुलना करण्यासाठी, परिस्थिती कशी बदलली आहे ते सांगण्यासाठीही 'used to' वापरतात.

Positive form: सकारात्मक

used to + verb
used to + क्रियापद

I used to play tennis.
I used to like coffee.

Negative form: नकारात्मक

We add 'did not' (didn't) to make the negative form. Note that after 'did not' there is no 'd' on 'use to'
नकारात्मक वाक्यासाठी  'did not' (didn't) वापरतात. इथे एक लक्षात घ्या, 'did not'च्या नंतर आलेल्या 'use to' पुढे  d लागत नाही.

I didn’t use to play tennis.
I didn’t use to like coffee.

We could also use the word 'never', here. Note that in the phrase 'never used to', we still include the 'd' on used to.
आपण इथे 'never' हा शब्द सुद्धा वापरू शकतो. पण  'never used to' मध्ये  'used to' मध्ये  'd' आहे.

I never used to like vegetables.

Question form: प्रश्नार्थक

We change the word order to make a question. 'Did' becomes the first word. Again, after 'did', 'use to' does not have a 'd'.

प्रश्न विचारताना  शब्दांचा क्रम बदलतो. प्रश्नाची सुरूवात  'Did' ने होते, आणि 'did', नंतर 'use to', येतं without a 'd'.

Did you use to play tennis?
Did you use to like coffee?

Game: 'used to'

Extension: 'would'

We sometimes use 'would' instead of 'used to' to describe past actions (not states). We often do this when we want to be nostalgic (to present the past in a postitive way).

कधी कधी  भूतकाळातील घटना सांगण्यासाठी 'used to' ऐवजी 'would' ही वापरलं जातं, बरेचदा भूतकाळात रमताना याचा वापर करतात.
During my school holidays I would often stay with grandparents. It was such a wonderful time!
