इंग्रजीत एक वाक्प्रचार आहे, know something like the back of your hand, म्हणजे आपल्या हाताएवढं नीट ओळखणं.

Hey Rob, I hear you have a holiday coming up soon.

Oh yes, we booked a trip to China to visit the home of pandas.

Do you mean Chengdu?

I do, yes. We are stopping there for a few days and then to Hong Kong for two weeks.

You know Chengdu is my home town? I grew up there.

Oh, I didn't know that. So you must know the place like the back of your hand.

The back of my hand? Well I know my hands pretty well, but they are just my hands, very ordinary.

Oh, it’s a very common expression, Helen. We use it to say that we know somewhere very well, or to talk about an extremely familiar place. You hear people say it all the time.

आणि त्यासाठी त्याने वाक्प्रचार वापरला, ‘know it like the back of her hand’. ‘Know’ म्हणजे माहिती असणं, आणि 'the back of your hand’ म्हणजे हाताची मागची बाजू; ‘know it like the back of her hand’.

She’s lived in the village all her life, and knows the area like the back of her hand. Always ask her for recommendations of what to see and do.

He knows the building like the back of his hand. He’s worked there for many years and knows all the shortcuts.

I don’t need to look at the music for this song when I play it on the piano – I know it like the back of my hand.

And, Helen, don’t forget that this phrase can used to describe things we know very well. It's not just limited to places. Here are some more examples:

Jenny knows that book like the back of her hand. She has read it at least twenty times.

Max knows the Bond films like the back of his hand; he could tell you the name of every character!

So Helen, since you lived in Chengdu for many years, have you got any recommendations for good places to visit in Chengdu?

Actually, the city has changed so much; I would be lost there like any other visitor. But my cousin still lives there. He definitely knows the city like the back of his hand.

Maybe I should give him a call.

I’m sure he’ll be happy to help.

Have a good trip then.

आता रॉबला हेलनच्या भावाशी बोलावं लागेल कारण 'he knows it like the back of his hand’. तुम्हाला अशा कुठल्या गोष्टी अगदी नीट माहीत आहेत की तुम्ही म्हणू शकता, ‘I know like the back of my hand’? Bye!
