Hi guys, this is Kee from BBC Learning English. Today I'm going to tell you the differences between 'mustn't' and 'don't have to'.

Now 'must' and 'have to' are similar in meaning – they are both used to describe obligations. However, their negative forms are completely different in meaning.

We still use 'mustn't' to talk about obligations. For example:
'In the house, I mustn't wear shoes' – you know, to keep the house clean.

But don't have to does not describe obligations, so the choice is yours. For example, if your teacher said 'you don't have to do your homework', well then the choice is yours. You can say 'alright, I won't'.

Function/કેવી રીતે ઉપયોગ કરવું

We use 'must not' to talk about obligations. 'Must not' is used to say that something is not the right thing to do.
અંગ્રેજીમાં 'must not' નો ઉપયોગ જવાબદારી અથવા ફરજ વિશે વાત કરવા માટે થાય છે. જો કોઈ વસ્તુ અથવા કાર્ય કરવું સારી વાત ન હોય તો 'Must not' નો ઉપયોગ કરશું.

- You mustn't use your phone on an aeroplane.
- You mustn't make fun of your friends.

We use 'don't have to' to talk about things that are unnecessary – there is no obligation. You can if you want, but you don't need to.
જે વસ્તુ અથવા બાબત બિનજરૂરી હોય (કોઈ જવાબદારી નથી) તો એના વિશે વાત કરવા માટે 'don't have to' નો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવે છે. જો ઈચ્છો તો 'don't have to' નો ઉપયોગ કરી શકો છો પણ ન કરો એ હિતવાહ છે.

- You don't have to come to the party by 8pm.
- You don't have to read the book tonight. You can read it tomorrow.

Structure /વાક્યરચના

Both 'mustn't' and 'don't have to' function as modal verbs, so they are always followed by a bare infinitive.
બન્ને 'mustn't' અને 'don't have to' એ 'modal verbs' તરીકે કાર્ય કરે છે. 'Modal verb' એટલે એક સહાયક ક્રિયાપદ જે આવશ્યકતા અથવા સંભાવના વ્યક્ત કરે છે. બન્ને 'bare infinitive' એટલે કે 'to' વિનાનું ક્રિયાપદ.

- I mustn't/don't have to go home early. (સાચો)
- I mustn't/don't have to going home early. (ખોટું)
