కొన్ని కొన్ని ఆఫీసుల్లో కొన్ని రకాలైన నిబంధనలుంటాయి. ఫార్మల్స్‌లో రావాలి, టీ షర్టులు వేసుకోకూడదు, టై కట్టుకోవాలి...ఇలా కొన్ని రూల్స్ ఉంటాయి. కొన్ని ఆఫీసుల్లో అలాంటి రూల్స్ ఏమీ ఉండవు, అన్నిటినీ అనుమతిస్తారు. ఇలా అనుమతి ఉన్న విషయాలు, లేని విషయాలను ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో ఎలా చెప్పాలో ఇవాళ తెలుసుకుందాం. ఇక్కడ ముగ్గురు వ్యక్తులు వాళ్ల ఆఫీసు సంగతులు చెప్తున్నారు. విందాం. మీకు పూర్తిగా అర్థం కాకపోయినా కంగారుపడకండి. నేను మీకు సహాయం చేస్తాను. ఎవరు అనుమతి ఉన్నవాటి గురించి మాట్లాడుతున్నారు? ఎవరు అనుమతి లేనిదాని గురించి మాట్లాడుతున్నారు?  జాగ్రత్తగా వినండి.  

We can wear jeans but we can't wear shorts.

We're allowed to finish early on a Friday.

We're not allowed to smoke inside.

విన్నారా? మూడో వ్యక్తి అనుమతి లేని విషయం గురించి చెప్పారు. వాళ్ల ఆఫీసు లోపల పొగ తాగకూడదుట. Sian, shall we look at the language they use to talk about things they are permitted to do?

Yes, so the first person used the verb 'can'. But can you remember what followed 'can'? Was it 'to' plus the verb or was it just the verb? Let's listen again to find out.

ఇక్కడ 'can' తరువాత సాధారణ క్రియాపదం వస్తుంది. క్రియ తరువాత 'to' రాదు. చెయ్యకూడని పనుల గురించి చెప్పాలంటే 'can't' అని వాడొచ్చు, ‘cannot’ ని కుదిస్తే 'can't' అవుతుంది.

Yes, and 'can' is a modal verb so it doesn't change its form. So we say, 'I can', 'you can', 'we can'. Let's quickly look at the pronunciation. So the positive form 'can' is not normally stressed in a sentence so it becomes 'can'. Repeat after me: 

‘can’

‘can wear jeans’

‘We can wear jeans’.

Great! So 'can' is unstressed but 'can't' is normally stressed isn’t it?

That's right. And it’s pronounced 'can't'. Let's practise the pronunciation.

అర్థమైందా? ‘Can’ వొత్తి పలకకుండా చెప్తాం. కానీ ‘can’t’ ఒత్తి పలుకుతాం. సరే, అనుమతికి సంబంధించి మనం ఇంకొక క్రియాపదం విన్నాం. గుర్తుందా?

అనుమతికి ‘allow’ అనే ఇంకో పదం కూడా వాడొచ్చు. 'Be allowed to' అంటే అనుమతిస్తారు అని అర్థం. ‘Can’ అన్నా 'be allowed to' అన్నా ఒకటే అర్థం. 'Be allowed to' తరువాత మళ్లీ సాధారణ క్రియాపదమే రావాలి.

Sian
But 'be allowed to' unlike 'can' does change its form – we need to change the form of the 'be' verb. So we say 'I'm allowed to' 'He's allowed to' 'they're allowed to'.

నెగటివ్ ఫార్మ్ అంటే అనుమతి లేదు అని చెప్పలంటే ఏ పదాలు వాడాలి?

Yes so to make it negative we use the negative form of the verb 'be'. Let's quickly practise. Repeat after me. 

‘I'm not allowed’.

‘she's not allowed’.

‘they're not allowed’.

Great! పెంపుడు జంతువులకు అనుమతి ఉంది, జంతువులను పెంచుకోవచ్చు అని చెప్పాలి. ఇది కూడా రెండు విధాలుగా చెప్పొచ్చు.

I'm allowed to have pets.
