Tejali
Sam
Well I don’t know about you James, but I would love to go to the space station – it would be an unforgettable experience! I would remember it forever!
James
Well, rather you than me – I’ll stay on the ground thanks! It sounds interesting flying into space, but there are a lot of concerns about the amount of time and money that is invested into research about space.
Sam
Hmm, I suppose that’s true – many people believe the amount of money invested in research about other planets is unsustainable.
James
I agree with this – we can’t keep spending all this money on space when there are problems closer to home that need to be solved.
Sam
Very true – there are many problems that need a more immediate solution, like making sure people have clean, drinkable water. You know, water that’s safe for people to drink.
James
Another similar issue is food – before we can worry about what’s out there, we need to ensure that everyone has access to a sustainable source of food.
Sam
While I don’t disagree with any of these points, I do think research into space and other planets is profitable.
James
You mean that we can profit from space exploration and research, right? Well, I would agree with that – there’s much we can learn from studying space.
Sam
For sure – most of the technology we have nowadays has benefited from space travel and exploration. It’s very costly to transport heavy computer equipment out of the Earth’s atmosphere, so NASA, the American space agency, researched how to miniaturize equipment.
James
And that is how computers have gone from the size of a room to the size of a watch! I suppose the knowledge we gain from space research is transferable – it can be used to help solve problems here on Earth too.
Tejali
Sam
So coming back the news story, people will be able to travel to the International Space Station, not only for research and scientific study, but also as tourists.
James
Well yes, but at $35,000 American dollars per day on the station, it’s not exactly affordable!
Sam
$35,000? That’s unbelievable! I can’t imagine having enough money to be able to go on a trip like that. Some people really do live excessive lifestyles!
James
Yes, like when celebrities take private jets or when a spoilt teenager gets a brand new car for their birthday. Some people struggle to earn a liveable wage – you know? Enough money to be able to survive.
Sam
True – a trip into space probably is a bit excessive, but I suppose if you are rich enough to do something like that, you’ve probably worked really hard to get there.
Tejali

Suffixes: -able
