Hi, I’m Sian.

And I’m Tom.  Welcome to today’s programme everybody!

Well, I can't think of anything more important. We need to do more to make our roads safe.

I agree that it's an important topic, but don't you think our roads are safe enough already?

That is a tough one! But I'd say the roads in the UK are probably safer than the roads in those other countries.

What makes you think that? I hear stories of hit-and-run crimes all the time, and most of these accidents occur because the drivers are speeding.

Hit-and-run crimes are a serious problem, but I think that all the speed cameras and all the speed bumps are effective deterrents to speeding cars.

Fine, I'll admit that there are many speed cameras in London, but do they really act as deterrents? What's the punishment for speeding cars?

Well, they get fined, they have to pay quite a bit of money and I think something bad happens to their driving licence. I’m not sure really…

See, that's the problem. These speeding cars could cost someone's life, but I'm not sure that the punishment fits the crime.

I admit – I might be starting to change my view on things. Maybe, in this case, the punishment doesn't fit the crime.

News insert

Dougal Shaw
Around the world one and quarter million people die each year as a result of road accidents. Speeding is responsible for around a third of all fatal accidents, and it's an aggravating factor in all accidents. In other words, the faster the vehicle's going, the worse the people's injuries will be.

Harriet Noble
Dougal, tell us then. What is this new novel solution to the problem of speeding vehicles that you found?

Dougal Shaw
Okay, Harriet. What if you let local volunteers take matters into their own hands? Devolve the power of speed detecting from the police to the people. Let them become the part of the solution.

Hmm… I’m not sure about this. Why should we have to do the job of the police?

I think it's a great idea. Police alone cannot solve this problem, so why not allow the people to take matters into their own hands?

Take matters into your own hands

Sure, if we all got involved in helping the police, our roads will be much safer! Talking of which, can you tell us the answer to the quiz?

OK, so what about the UK?

Ah, you see! I knew it. Third safest is pretty good!

Well that's good news, but we can still do more. Shall we go and volunteer in that programme to catch speeding cars?

'Hit and run' म्हणजे गाडीचा अपघात करून पळून जाणे; ‘deterrent’ म्हणजे परावृत्त किंवा प्रतिबंध करणारे; ‘punishment fits the crime’ म्हणजे गुन्ह्याला साजेशी शिक्षा आणि ‘take matters into your own hands’ म्हणजे कह्यात घेणे. Bye
