Hankering after a comforting dinner for one? This is how to make a single serving of dauphinoise potatoes. Unbeatable on a cold day.

  1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7.

  2. Place the potato, garlic, cream and milk into a saucepan and heat gently for five minutes.

  3. Pour into a small gratin dish and sprinkle over the Gruyère. Place into the oven and bake for 12 minutes, remove from the oven, then let it sit for five to ten minutes before serving.
