Combine the sugar with three tablespoons of water and heat on a low heat until the sugar dissolves.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
Once cool, place the sugar in a blender with the cherries, lime juice, tequila, cherry liqueur or Cointreau, and the ice.
Blend until smooth, and serve in martini glasses with a sugared rim.
