  5. 'The thing I promote is just being yourself'

    Newbie Tuesday #43 Joy Crookes

    Kev Geoghegan

    Music News LIVE reporter

    View more on youtube

South Londoner Joy Crookes' brand of British R&B has drawn almost inevitable comparisons with Amy Winehouse and she shares the late singer's uncanny ability to weave lyrics about rebellion, heartbreak and empowerment into slinky jazz-inflected earworms.

Perfect for someone who admits to being "obsessed with Motown and Motown songwriters".

"For me, my songs that talk about sexuality, talk about female empowerment, talk about suffering... whatever...has come from personal experience," says the singer, who been backed by BBC Music Introducing.

"I have to be honest - my music is the only place I can be really honest and for some reason it resonates with people, and that's just a bonus.

"When I feel like I've got a song out that I needed to write for myself, it's the most rewarding feeling."

None more so than her track, May I Sleep With Danger and Power, which is already proving to be a hit during her festival shows.

You're a man on a mission / But you seem to forget / You came here through from a woman /Show some ******* respect

"I always close my set with Power," she says backstage at the Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire.

"It's not an upbeat song, it's not lighthearted, if anything it's the complete opposite, it's about female empowerment.

"When you play live you get people excited and worked up and singing and dancing but when you close with that song, it's the one which makes people say, 'I want to see that girl again'.

"Not that this is a whole branding thing for me. I think it's really important to connect on a different level and at festivals you have to do it a different way."

    View more on youtube

If connecting with audiences, particularly young girls, is what Joy is aiming to do, it won't be long before she is being cited as a role model for young women.,

It's something to which Joy aspires but notes that at 19, she is still very young herself.

"I'd love to be that. It's a very big responsibility...for girls my age with stuff like social media, the thing I promote is just being yourself and not having to live for anyone but yourself and being happy that way, saying what you want to say and not isolating anyone."

    View more on twitter

As for her own inspirations, Joy credits seeing Adele's performance at the Brit awards in 2011 with helping her decide to be a singer.

"How incredibly honest she was and even at age 11 or 12 and not having gone through any heartbreak she made it easy to understand."

She also lists iconic singers like Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and Sarah Vaughan.

"The freedom that these women, at such a scary time, with their voices, with what they could say and how they could say it, every single performance Nina does she does something different."

Joy released her debut EP Influence at the tail end of 2017 and supported singer Jacobs Banks on his UK tour.

She says she hopes to have another EP ready by the end of 2018 but only when she is 100% happy with the material.

"I set myself a standard and need to make sure its step above," she says adding that she'd "like to have a production credit".

"I've been working really hard at home learning to produce myself... I'm a lot more direct and self-assured since learning to produce."

  9. Country star slams Nike's Colin Kaepernick ad

    John Rich

NFL star Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a furore by kneeling during the US national anthem, has been unveiled as one of the faces in Nike's "Just Do It" 30th anniversary campaign, and US country star, John Rich, of the duo Big & Rich, has taken to Twitter to express his anger over the decision.

In 2016, Kaepernick refused to stand for the Star Spangled Banner anthem in protest at police violence against African-Americans, with other players following suit.

But the protest divided the country and sparked Donald Trump's anger, who called players who "disrespect" the US flag "sons of bitches". Kaepernick hasn't played in the NFL since last year as a result.

The new ad features a closeup of Kaepernick’s face, with the words, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

In his Nike-blasting tweets, Rich included a photo of Kaepernick’s “pig socks” - which depict cartoon porcine police officers - which he wore during San Francisco 49ers training camp in 2016.

  10. Rapper Lil Pump is heading to jail

    Lil Pump

In more (totally unrelated) rap news, teenage Soundcloud rapper Lil Pump's taken to Instagram with a NSFW update on life, and folks, he's off to prison for a couple of months.

At the end of August, the 18-year-old was arrested in Miami for driving without a driver's license, violating the conditions of his probation.

    He explained to his fans...

Quote Message: Listen up, y'all, I'm just going to get straight to the point. Y'all seen what happened in Miami. I got arrested...I'm on probation in L.A. I just violated my PO, so I gotta go in and do a couple months.

However, Pump (or is it Lil?) isn't letting this detract from his musical ambitions, pointing out that some "crazy" music will be "dropping while I'm in there."

  11. Machine Gun Kelly fires back at Eminem with diss track

    Machine Gun Kelly

A week after Eminem dissed Machine Gun Kelly on his new album, Kamikaze, Kelly has fired back at his former idol with a diss track called Rap Devil.

A spin on Eminem's 2013 track Rap God, MGK goes in hard, slagging off everything from Eminem being "sober and bored" to his "weird beard."

Hit 'em where it hurts, Kelly!

MGK explained on Twitter (we've left the grammar as is):

Quote Message: Im standing up for not just myself, but my generation. i'm doing the same [stuff] you did back in ur day. life is still real on my side, and i had to take time from the grind to defend myself from someone i called an idol. love, Rap Devil.

Before the feud, MGK frequently cited Eminem as one of his greatest influences, but relations soured when Kelly tweeted that Eminem's daughter Hailie Jade was "hot".

Which, if you have ever been to see the Foo Fighters, is not a massive surprise.

The band said on their Facebook page: "After opening this leg of the tour September 1 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Dave Grohl suffered a loss of voice and is now on vocal rest."

The frontman-cum-funnyman added: “That’s the last time I ever make out with Bono,” referencing the U2 singer's recent throat troubles.

  17. Franklin family found Pastor's eulogy 'distasteful'

    Jasper Williams

Aretha Franklin's nephew has said the family found an Atlanta pastor's eulogy delivered at the Queen of Soul's funeral on Friday to be offensive and distasteful.

Reverend Jasper Williams Jr. was criticised on social media for his 50-minute address, describing children being in a home without a father as "abortion after birth".

He also said black lives do not matter unless blacks stop killing each other, prompting Stevie Wonder - there to perform - to yell out, "Black lives matter!"

"We found the comments to be offensive and distasteful," said Vaughn Franklin (pictured below far-right), who said his aunt never requested Williams to deliver a eulogy.

"At no time did he properly eulogise her."

Cristal, Victorie, Jordan and Vaughn Franklin speak during Aretha Franklin"s funeral

Rev Williams was invited as he had spoken at other family memorials in the past including the funeral for Aretha's father, C.L. Franklin.

Since the ceremony, Williams hasn't backed down from his comments - which suggested a black woman cannot raise a black boy to be a man - saying he respected the family's opinion.

"I understand it, regret it. But I'm sorry they feel that way."

Some people suggested his speech was disrespectful of Aretha, a single mother of four boys.

Cardi and rapper Offset welcomed Kulture back in July, and the doting father recently demonstrated the extent of his love for his new daughter by tattooing Kulture's name onto his face.
