Concert Information

On 19 November 1923, works by three composers were premiered in the newly-named city of Budapest to celebrate the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda. Kodály’s offering was the most extraordinary – an intense and outspoken setting of Psalm 55 that was heard as a cry of unity from a nation ravaged by conflict. Psalmus Hungaricus forms the culmination of this anniversary season finale, with Principal Guest Conductor Dalia Stasevska marshalling the forces of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, who also perform a gem by Bartók premiered by this orchestra in 1934.

In between, the incomparable Pekka Kuusisto joins the orchestra for the poetry and virtuosity of Magnus Lindberg’s first Violin Concerto.
