A weather presenter discusses temperature change over the course of a day. Using the map, the presenter shows how the temperature will fall to below zero over the course of the night. She then poses a question and thinking time is given to work out the answer.

Classroom Ideas

This clip can be used to help pupils visualise the existence and place of negative numbers. The clip can be shown a first time for pupils to familiarise themselves with their existence. Then, the teacher can place a set of numbers, both positive and negative, on the walls. As the clip is played a second time, pupils would have to move into the correct temperature zone according to the temperature displayed by the weather person each time the clip is paused. There could additionally be a line placed across the floor at the point of zero degrees Celsius so that pupils have a greater opportunity to appreciate when they are moving from positive to negative numbers.
