Description

The Holderness coastline is the fastest eroding coastline in Europe. A farm on the edge of the cliff is being lost to the sea and the owners are set to lose everything as insurance companies refuse to insure the land and property. The erosion has been significantly worse since coastal defences were built further down the coastline at Mappleton.

Classroom Ideas

A star diagram could be developed which looks at the factors which affect the rate of erosion on a coastline. This activity could then progress and identify which of these factors are human and which are physical. A discussion could be led about why building coastal defences at Mappleton probably increased the rate of erosion. Students could suggest which types of defences in Mappleton would have the greatest impact further up the coast and why.
