Electricity can be dangerous so we need to know how to use it safely. Insulators protect us from electricity. A test kit, a bit like those used by electricians, is used to test for materials which complete an electrical circuit and conduct electricity, and those which are insulators. Plastic, rubber and wood are shown to be insulators, while metal is a conductor of electricity.

Classroom Ideas

This clip provides examples of insulators and conductors in the kitchen. It could be particularly useful when consolidating knowledge on insulators and conductors in the home. Alternatively, if children were designing kitchen equipment, this clip could be used to remind them about materials which are conductors and insulators and the importance of understanding the properties of materials when designing products which come into contact with electricity. Children could extend their knowledge by designing a fair test to test for conductivity in other materials.
