Description

The commentary is by the young Jewish girl who has grown up many years after the Second World War. The young girl and her brother are in hiding from the Nazis. The children try to keep really quiet as the owners of the house teach children to play the piano. The young girl also dreams of her friends and cowers during a night time raid. The children eat a meal in the house to celebrate the festival of Hanukkah with the owners. The children also receive gifts from their mother and father and listen to some music on a gramophone. The meal is disturbed by a knock at the door. The children quickly return to the cellar.

Classroom Ideas

Children could write who they think is at the door, describing the next events. Having read extracts from Anne Frank’s diary, children could discuss how other families did the same as Anne. Children could research why the children in the clip needed to hide from the Nazis.
