Products and designed systems have been passed back and forth between the military and the mainstream market for many years. One current example is video games. We look at a serious game which is being designed and produced by a team at the University of Birmingham. Subsafe is a repurposed video game which has been developed to train submariners to find their way around a submarine. Interviews with both the developers and the end users explain the process and pitfalls.

Computer modelling and its advantages as a training aid for the navy can be discussed . A student activity to design a skills training game by producing sketched proposals could be the follow up.
