Although most widely known for creating The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams (1952 - 2001) remains one of Doctor Who's best-loved writers. He served as Script Editor on Doctor Who back in the 1970s and 30 years ago this month, the series he worked on opened with The Destiny of the Daleks. Adams wrote the Fourth Doctor adventures The Pirate Planet and Shada and was the creative force behind the 1979 classic, The City of Death, which current Executive Producer Julie Gardner has cited as one of her favourite stories.
Adams' passion for the rare and remarkable shines through in his scripts for Doctor Who and was given full vent in his 1989 radio series, Last Chance to See in which he explored the vanishing natural world with Mark Carwardine.
The show has now regenerated into a television series featuring Stephen Fry and has its own website where you can discover more about Douglas Adams and his zeal for wild life and ecology.
