The Doctor walks confidently through the undergrowth of Kembel towards the TARDIS... |
...only to be stopped in his tracks by the sight of two Daleks at the door of the time machine.
The Day of Armageddon
The Daleks examine the craft...
.. and issue instructions that base security be informed that an intruder craft has been located.
'Priority alert, invaders to be located and destroyed.'
The Doctor quietly retraces his steps through the jungle, eager not to be heard.
The alien noises emerging from the jungle help disguise his footsteps.
A message comes through that Operation Inferno is to be put into execution at once.
'Inform all units - evacuate patrols to safety areas: confirm when units in position. On confirmation start abbreviated countdown for Operation Inferno.'
In a reception area within the Dalek city Mavic Chen is frantically writing.
He is interrupted by the arrival of a Dalek.
The Dalek heralds the arrival of a heavily robed figure.
Mavic Chen moves to greet him.
Arms outstretched, Zephon, Master of the Fifth Galaxy introduces himself to Chen.
After exchanging pleasantries Chen is eager to get down to business. 'I have been reading the reports on the previous meetings here,' says Chen, adding, 'The Daleks have evolved a most interesting plan.'
Zephon is immediately on the defensive, saying that his people were also involved in the plan's formulation. 'You must admit the Daleks have a genius for war,' argues Chen.
A war of words develops, with Zephon claiming that Chen is a traitor to his people for joining those who hope to destroy the power that the Solar System government wields.
Chen refutes the claim, and suggests that Zephon has failed to bring peace to his own galaxy, pointing to efforts by the planets Fisar and the Emodyment Gris to depose him.
Chen decides to defuse the situation, suggesting now is not the time for such a serious discussion and that they take some air.
In another area of the city, three Daleks converge.
'Report!' asks one. 'Guardian of the Solar System Chen must be watched,' answers another. 'His ambitions exceed his usefulness.'
'When he has served his purpose, he, like the others, will be eliminated! No power in this universe can stop the Daleks!'
The wounded Steven awakes with a start. 'Where's the Doctor?,' he asks Katarina.
Steven remains dazed and confused. Katarina explains that the tablets she gave him has made him better, but that he still must rest.
Katarina tells him that they had to leave the temple - The TARDIS - because of the Daleks.
The Doctor stumbles on and is surprised to find Steven and Katarina.
He is even more surprised when he hears that they have released Bret Vyon and it was he who told them that they must flee the TARDIS, putting their life in danger.
Katarina explains that Bret helped them get away from the evil ones and that he gave Steven some tablets to make him well.
The Doctor realises he has misjudged Bret. He tells Steven that he must pull himself together as they have work to do.
From deep with in the jungle Bret Vyon spots four Daleks.
'Operate pyro-flames!' orders one of the evil machines. 'We obey!' respond the others.
The Daleks advance through the jungle, burning down any plant life that stands in their way. Burning the jungle
A clear path for the Daleks is created.
Bret watches anxiously.
Meanwhile, the Doctor and Katarina support a reluctant Steven as they leave the clearing.
Bret approaches them and the Doctor is quick to ask him what is happening.
A clearly worried Bret tells them that the Daleks are burning down the jungle.
Steven thinks that if they go back to the TARDIS the Daleks will be in wait. An argument with the Doctor ensues.
'Quiet! Will you shut up!' interrupts Bret. 'Look, I don't care what happens to you, but I've got to warn Earth!'
'Yes, and you have to do far more than that!,' counteracts the Doctor. 'If the Daleks are doing something drastic, then we have to stop the Daleks! Now will you shut up, sir. Hmmm?'
The Daleks continue their destruction of the Kembel jungle...
Burning all in their path, the full might of the Daleks is a truly terrifying sight.
The Doctor suggests that Bret must tell the people of Earth to look back to the year 2157 when the Daleks first invaded and prepare to prevent such an invasion again.
With the fire approaching the Doctor decides they must head to the Dalek city. Bret agrees, saying that is the last place the Daleks will think of looking for them.
From a viewpoint, Mavic Chen marvels at the Dalek firepower alongside a thoughtful Zephon.
The war of words begins again, as Zephon accuses Chen of being afraid of the Daleks.
Zephon explains that he is not a mere pawn: without his help the Daleks would never have got the co-operation of the masters of Celation and Beaus.
'Three galaxies for the price of one,' comments Chen. 'Perhaps I'm the one of those who knows my place,' says Chen, acidically.
Zephon decides to wait, believing the meeting won't start without him. Meanwhile the delegates enter the conference room followed by a Dalek.
The Dalek Supreme discusses Zephon with another Dalek and decides that his usefulness is over.
The Doctor, Steven, Bret and Katarina approach the magnificent site of the Dalek city which includes a landing pad where the delegates craft have docked.
A sudden noise prompts the travellers to dive for cover...
... as the clawed foot of Zephon approaches.
Bret reaches for his gun, but the Doctor pulls it away from him.
The Doctor helps Bret drag him to the ground.
The Daleks and the delegates wait in the conference room for Zephon. The delegates wait
The heavy-lidded eyes of Trantis look on, tired of the wait.
The veiny-headed Malpha looks disgusted by the delay.
With his bald and chiselled features, Celation looks angrily on.
The Dalek Supreme asks Chen where Zephon is. 'He will be here... eventually,' says Chen. 'Search for him! orders the Dalek.'
The travellers examine the body of Zephon. Steven is disgusted with the creature, who the Doctor realises must be one of the delegates.
Bret urges them all to hurry to Chen's ship, but the Doctor is eager to find out exactly what the Daleks are planning.
The Doctor plans to infiltrate the conference. Katarina voices concern for his safety.
The Doctor hands Bret a tape recorder, telling him that he's not sure of its importance, but to hang on to it just in case.
Bret protests that they can't leave him. 'Earth must be warned about the Daleks and about Chen,' explains the Doctor.
The Doctor dresses in Zephon's cloak, while a worried Bret looks on.
Nearby, two Daleks discuss the whereabouts of Zephon.
The Doctor, dressed in Zephon's cloak emerges from the shadows.
He fools the Daleks that he is the missing delegate and they order him to join the meeting.
Bret tells Steven that he admires the Doctor's nerve.
Katarina is worried that the Doctor will be caught. Steven tries to reassure her. 'I hope not, he says. 'Anyway, he's doing his part, we must do ours. Let's get that ship.'
Meanwhile, Zephon struggles with his bonds.
In the conference room the Daleks leads the disguised Doctor in.
He bows before the Supreme Dalek. 'The master of the Fifth Galaxy has seen fit to join us,' shrieks the alien voice of Trantis.
The Dalek Supreme orders the Doctor to take his place.
The Doctor heads to sit down, but unfortunately in the wrong direction. Chen comments that he seems lost and points to the empty place next to him.
The Doctor bows once more and takes his seat next to Chen.
The Dalek Supreme announces that the seventh meeting is now in session. He tells the representatives of an important development. The time destructor is now completed: it only requires the core to be fitted to work.
The alien delegates all show their appreciation...
Some pound their hands on the surface in front of them...
... or their clawed fists.
The Doctor remains motionless...
... while Chen applauds enthusiastically.
The Dalek Supreme calls for Chen to address the meeting.
'As your most recent ally, and the newest member to stand in this great universal council, I am delighted to be able to make so significant a contribution to our conquest of the universe.'
He holds up the core of the time destructor and says that it has taken fifty Earth years for the necessary taranium, the rarest mineral in the universe, to be acquired.
Trantis remains cynical, suggesting that as it has taken so long, it would have been better if one of the outer galaxies were asked to provide it.
But Chen is quick to defend his position, saying that taranium can only be found on one of the dead planets of the solar system.
'I, Mavic Chen, give you the core of the time destructor!' he reiterates grandly.
Meanwhile, the real Zephon stands up and continues to struggle with his bonds.
In Chen's spaceship two technicians are busy examining the controls, readying the ship for take-off.
Bret enters blaster in hand and announces that he is taking over the spaceship.
Free of some of his ankle bonds, Zephon approaches the conference room.
Having disposed of the tied-up technicians in the undergrowth Bret, Steven and Katarina enter the ship. Despite assurances, Katarina fears that the Daleks will find the bodies and the Doctor will be discovered.
Zephon sets off an alarm.
A worried Katarina, Steven and Bret hear the loud noise.
Panic ensues in the conference room. The Dalek Supreme orders the intruder to be captured.
The delegates flee in panic...
... giving the Doctor the opportunity to take the time destructor core.
Fleeing the conference, the Doctor is pursued by a lumbering Zephon.
'That's him! Stop him! Stop the creature! Stop the creature,' shouts Zephon.
In Chen's ship, Bret says that they must go. 'We mustn't leave him!' argues Steven.
'Great One, don't leave us! Don't let the strange beings catch him!' Katarina prays aloud.
Steven wrestles with Bret over the controls.
'He's been caught! We've got to leave!', says Bret and pushes Steven away.
Katarina dashes to the controls and pleads with Bret to stop.
'We're going without him!' says Bret, his word final. He activates the final launch sequence...
