Ruth is alerted by the sound of Mollie's protestations and asks Terrall what he is doing. Terrall is furious at Mollie for wandering around the house at such a late hour and tells her to go to the sitting room, where Mr Maxtible will decide what to do with her. Ruth quickly comforts the sobbing maid before she leaves.
