Year of Intelligent Tigers - Reviews

Lucien Barnes

I really loved this book. Kate Orman is always worthwhile, but with this one she's managed something really shiny.

Imagine a Venn Diagram (oh go on - surely you remember them from bad maths lessons) of all the people this book would appeal to - Doctor Who fans, cat lovers, sci fi fans. It's got a wide appeal, and a hefty overlap.

Yes, it is a book about big, smug cats - but it doesn't make them cutesy-wutesy, and it gives them a great sci fi premise for being the way they are.

What's frustrating - and rewarding - about this book is the way it constantly veers away from being neat and tidy. Just when you think it's going to get easy, or cute, it shifts direction, until you end up sharing the Eighth Doctor's childish annoyance that people just can't get on.

It's marvellous. It's smart. It's cunning, and it's quite unpredictable. David Wells

I loved the idea of intelligent big cats, like the Cheetah Peeople in Survival.

This book was great, especially as it begins with the TARDIS crew relaxing. The story is told with humour and pananche and was entertaining as a Doctor Who book should be.
