Byzantium! - Reviews

Michael Stead

Quite probably the worst book I have ever read, if not the worst one ever written. The characterisation is very poor. At one point it is suggested that before meeting the Doctor, Barbara would have shrunk under the bedcovers rather than face a difficult situation.

On TV, however, Barbara is the pushy teacher whose investigations lead the viewers to the Doctor in the first place.

Ian, too, has quite inappropriate dialogue. He shies away from two sexual encounters, yet over the page declares about them "Nice work if you can get it."

Topping fails to note the distinction between a synagogue and the Temple in Jewish faith. He also introduces syphilis to Europe nearly 1,500 years too early.

There are too many other examples of bad writing to list them all. Virtually every page is painful to read. A complete waste of ink and paper. Tim Wells

One of the worst Doctor Who books I've read. This was very boring, and spent too much time putting today's morals on the society of Roman Byzantium, which not only ruins a book that could be good, but also pushes the story into the background most of the time.
