I always consider history-based books a dangerous thing to read. When you know the true history, it can destroy a lot of things within the book you read. Asylum is a wonderful book, however, with a very carefully researched historical background.
The Doctor and Nyssa stay in the background, with the whole action carrying on almost without them. This makes the book an interesting diversion after a lot of other stories relying heavily on the Doctor.
