Don't forget that banker bloke who was embarrassed that he was paying a lower proportion of his income in tax than the office cleaner.

How much of this a real fact and how much is myth and spin? Some real data please...

I'm so disappointed not to see all those rich gamblers from the city to be hit with a retrospective windfall tax. It is they who created this mess and they who should pay to clean it up.

Might not be on par with some of our bankers, but compared to the average salary in this country, anyone on that salary just doesn't know they are born!

The life, the fun I could have, the places I could go with that dosh, the HIV/TB orphans I could put through school with that! All those malaria nets!

Suppose with only 40K it wouldn't be realistic to have one of those expensive things called a telly showing those kids in Ghana today ....

For crying out loud! I presume this non-trick of accounting was deemed to be appropriate by the board reading their horoscopes in today's red tops. With this manky accounting, they obviously have seen it in the stars that there will be retrospective laws enacted. They have no intentions of doing the right thing, only what they know they will get away with.

And in today's climate the senior managers are doing very well. Surprised, anyone?

It is time criminal investigations are carried out in every financial institution in the land. The regulators should be investigated in the same way. Spivs no longer describes these people.

Your post seems to demonstrate clearly that it is nonsense to hear/see that only badly run businesses go bust.

There will be many good businesses lost in the coming months and years as a result of the deplorable activities the greedy few.

Keep working and succeeding.

And who will run them? Have they, like Labour found more new friends who have to be kept in great wealth, somehow? Or have they found experienced bankers who understanding banking, and banking regulation who will be able to do a better job than what we have now?

Do they mean that these global monsters need to be replaced with little local banks, and therefore globalisation is not quite the fantastic wonderful thing we have all been told it is?

Have they mentioned what they will do about adequate regulation? Have they mentioned anything about minimal capitalisation of these new small banks? Will these banks be casino-type banks or the boring, though steady kind?
New small banks, but no criminal investigation into those who brought us here?
Did any of the tories mention the word ethical, and if they did, did they define what they mean by that?

Or was it a quick soundbite to convince us they have changed?
By definition, political leaders will say anything to ensure they get in power.

One lot is as useful as the rest, in the end.

The Tories will sell it to their mates - the same mates/spivs of Labour, the same usual bunch of incompetents. The smaller banks will grow and merge and we'll be back to where we are now in no time.

The only chance is to make them ethical and for the public to refuse to deal with those who are not. After all, if we don't buy their goods and services, they won't survive no matter their size.

Opening your mind to different societies and different systems within them will help you envision the possibilities of improving your own country.

I've referring to communities such as the Maassai and Samburu in East Africa. The Batwa are also interesting.

You may percieve your world as the best. But it is a perception, not a fact. rather than explain the way of life to you, the point I was making is there is no real NEED to use a bank. There is only a desire.

As somali_pirate and others has suggested, the banks can be taught to behave themselves. If you don't like their way of doing business, then take your business elsewhere. That is what markets are all about. If you don't want a service or an item, then no company can force it on you. You have feet and you know how to use them.

Just as the Samburu perceive our way of life as crazy, they just do not follow us. They stick to their own culture. They take from our culture what they see as useful and refuse to become involved in what they see as senseless. For instance, why buy a home when you can build one in a day? Why buy a garden fence when thorn bush make a far better barrier? They are a very serene, calm people with a great understanding of the world they live with the respect, wisdom and integrity we should all aim for.

It is all down to choices. And you do have that freedom to choose.

Found an article referring to what I vaguely remembered. A website called Ethical Corporation has an article about how Scottish prawns were sent to China for shelling. Then brought back to the UK for sale. The same article refers to the loss of 70 jobs in the scampi industry. 70 folk lost their jobs because it was cheaper and therefore more profitable to ship scampi to China for shelling. The scampi were then shipped all the way back to the River Clyde to be rolled in breadcrumbs and then sold.

Wonder if somali_pirate is after those ships!

During the '80s the communities hit really hard with the destruction of their industries got together and created Credit Unions.

I've no idea if it would be worth thinking about, but couldn't all the small businesses get together and create a Credit Union for Business? If that could be pulled off, it would mean you could cut out a lot of those rip-off charges.

And what is it you think we shouldn't strive for? You have nothing to learn from Africa?

That's just silly. Today's sophisticated way of life requires something more sophisticated than cash. Yes, you can pay some of your bills in notes if you really want to traipse down to the bank or post office and hand them over. But how do you pay for your online purchases? How do you book a flight on the internet? Your TV licence? Your home contents insurance? How will you buy and sell your next home? Do you take huge bundles of cash when you go abroad?

What's silly about not allowing a great big monolith control your cash?
Doesn't have to be sophisticated. Folk manage to run businesses all around this world without the banker's kind of sophistication.
What's wrong with a bit of fresh air and a walk down to the bank. Good for your health too, a bit of walking is.
What online purchases?
Why book a flight on the internet? Travel agent does a very fine job for me. Her name is Kathy, very nice, friendly and efficient woman.
Local post office gives me a very easy means to pay for the TV license. Pretty walk there too.
Doesn't your insurance agent come round every week to collect his money? We use the post office.
Don't own a home so don't need a bank for that.
The next one I buy will be a cash sale. In cash.
Yeah, I take cash on holiday. Tried the bank thing in sub-Sahara Africa. The advice from the bank about the card being acceptable wasn't true. Expensive lesson for me, though I did close the account asap. My driver was so annoyed too. It was more than an 800 mile drive across two national borders to get to the nearest bank. That bit of plastic was just such a pain in the butt (it's called an African Massage on those roads)! Never again! Though the drive through the mountains and volcanoes was a stunning sight. Magnificent.

I'd pay my bills the same way my family have done for generations! You might want to re-read the post you are taking issue with.

Haven't you ever seen a postal order? Didn't your grannie give you one for birthdays? Haven't you ever been to the electricity company and handed over cash to pay a bill? Never held the wee brown packet in your hand? Crivens!

I didn't need a bank account for my first two jobs in the '80s. My mum pays all her bills without the aid of a bank. The bank account she has to get her state pension doesn't allow for direct debits, online payments etc. She's never written a cheque in her life!

What banking facilities do you think they have in sub-saharan Africa? People run businesses there and pay their bills all without bank accounts, so no you do not NEED a bank account. Your boss just doesn't want to pay you in cash.

Until the government forced through child benefit and pension payments into banks most of the people in my community didn't have a bank account, ever!

Rather than work to improve the living standards of those trapped in abject poverty around the world our betters have choosen to go for a knowledge economy. Hence increasing University fees and indebtedness of the young before they even begin working!

Someone remind me, how many countries do prawns visit before they end up in your freezer? Better to use cheap labour and transportation costs.... well, how else do you get ever increasing profit margins if you are a business leader?

Don't forget what a problem environmental, health and safety, etc regulations are here in Europe. If you want a job, a proper job and an economy then risk your health, life and your environment....

Here is the terrible problem:
UK tax payers bail them out.
They then support business in the Far East rather than ours.
We go bust - why? 'cos none of have jobs and therefore can't pay tax on what we don't have!

Would you lend your mate money when you know they are intending to stand-by and watch you and yours perish? In those terms, would you struggle with the decision? It's called being a decent human being. With integrity.

We all know we are being taken for mugs. Watch the pbs link from the comments yesterday.

Those rigs should be built as close to the site where they will operate. Why waste the fuel in excessive transportation? Just brings the Peak Oil problem a little closer, doesn't it? Well, it is academic after all.

That bloomin' pension again 7:10pm on 03 Apr 2009 Heard of the grapevine today that the rather ETHICAl Co-Op bank has increased the number of accounts by 70 per cent.

I think that number should be quite a bit higher - so the only way to make it clear to the RBS board and the politicians is to shift your account and other business away from companies such as RBS.

Somali sounds like a good way to slow the increase in unemployment with your 'keel-hauling some landlubbers' activities. Happy drinking matey...
