Make the 2021 Blue Peter Christmas card!

You will need

  • A clean odd sock you no longer want (you could also use old clothing, stretchy works best)
  • Colourful card
  • Scissors
  • PVA glue
  • Glue stick
  • Tape
  • Pom-poms (you could also use cotton wool)
  • Crafty bits like pipe cleaners and glitter glue

Step one:

Take two sheets of colourful A4 card and stick them together using a glue stick. This will ensure that your card is sturdy enough to hold a stocking filled with gifts! Once the glue has dried, fold your card in half.

Top tip:
✨ You could choose two different colours to create a funky card! We used green on the outside and red on the inside.

Step two:

Take another piece of card and, with a pencil, draw a stocking shape. You can go as big or as small as you want, but make sure that your stocking shape fits comfortably on your sock with at least 5mm spare around the edge.

With the help of a grown-up, cut out your stocking template from the card.

Top tip:
✨ Your stocking template will be visible in your final design so pick a colour that goes with your theme.

Step three:

Lay your stocking template onto your scrap fabric making sure the top sits trim with the top of your sock. Use a marker pen to roughly draw an outline 5mm from the template, leaving the top (which will be your stocking opening) marker free.

With the help of a grown-up cut along your marker pen line.

Step four:

Flip both your fabric stocking shape and your card stocking shape over. Place your card stocking shape onto the fabric, making sure that the top is trim with the top of the sock. Now, with PVA, carefully glue the edges to the back of the card.

To make the stocking extra secure, use sticky tape on top of the glue.

Top tip:
✨ If you are struggling to glue the fabric down in the corner of the stocking use scissors to snip a small incision that will allow the fabric to fold more easily.

Step five:

Top tip:
✨ Pop your gift in your stocking before gluing so you can check how it will look once it is stuck. Once you are happy with how it looks, remove your gifts before sticking. You don't want sticky gifts!

You are now ready to glue the stocking to the card! Apply a generous amount of glue to the back, and press and hold it onto your card.

Step six:

Once your stocking is securely attached to your card, you are ready to decorate! It is completely up to you how you want jazz up your sock stocking, but we recommend making a small gift tag to write a Christmas message or the name of a loved one.

You can make a gift tag by taping one end of a piece of string to the inside of your stocking and the other end to your card. Then, glue a small rectangle of paper or card on top with a glue stick.

Step seven:

Using PVA, glue white poms-poms or cotton wool to the top of your stocking.

The rest is up to you... go as sparkly as your heart desires! Use any pens, craft bits and pieces, glitter glue, pipe cleaners, ribbons, paint, sequins, buttons, whatever you have!

Once everything is dry, write your Christmas message inside and then carefully pop your candy canes, sweets or whatever you want, inside your stocking! Ta-da, your card is looking wonderful! 🤩

Merry Christmas!

Stocking filler suggestions:

🧦 You could switch the candy cane for a different sweet or chocolate.

🧦 You could use the stocking to hold pens, pencils or crayons

🧦 You could even make a card for your pet and pop a small treat inside the stocking!
