Make a rainbow suncatcher

You will need

  • Black card
  • Coloured tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Cellophane or a clear plastic wallet
  • PVA glue

Step one

First, you will need to draw your rainbow onto the black card, make sure you include two clouds at the bottom. You need to have a thick border because this will make the outline for your sun catcher.

Step two

Next, you will need to cut around the inside and the outside of your template. You will need to get an adult to help you. To cut the middle you need to pierce a hole with your scissors and then cut along the line - put a piece of blue tack behind the card to make this easier. Be careful that you don't cut through the edge of the cloud.

Step three

Once you have cut the shape of the rainbow out of your black card you will need to get a piece of cellophane or cut a clear plastic wallet in half and glue your rainbow template onto it.

Step four

Now you are ready to create the colour for your rainbow, the colours of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. You will need to cut the tissue paper into lots of small triangles.

Step five

Now it's time to stick the tissue paper onto the back of the rainbow (the side where you can see the PVA glue on your template). Use a dab of glue onto the clear plastic then place the small pieces of tissue on top of the glue a few pieces at a time. We put the colour in order of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Then you can fill in the clouds using white or grey tissue paper.

Step five

Lastly, you need to leave your suncatcher to dry. Once it is dry you can cut off the remaining plastic around the rainbow. Then if you hold it up to the sunlight in your window you will see the effect it makes!
