Make Henry's chew toy!

You will need

  • An old t-shirt
  • Tennis ball
  • Scissors

Step one

First, you need to cut the sleeves off the t-shirt and cut the top half off, make sure you get an adult to help! Then you need to cut down one side so that you can lay the material out flat. Make sure you keep hold of any leftover material because this can be used to tie your plait later.

Step two

Next, you need to make two slits on each side using scissors - but make sure you do not cut all the way across! You want to have three even strips of material on both sides and a square in the middle to cover the ball. We think it looks a little bit like a spider!

Step three

After this, place the ball in the centre of your 'spider' and fold the material over the ball. You need to hold the material at the top and fold over the ball and then take the material from the bottom and do the same - this a tricky part!

Step four

Now you need to scrunch the material around the ball and tie a knot around it two times with another slim piece of material. You could use some of the leftover t-shirt, we used another old t-shirt so we had a different colour, to save waste you could make two alternating toys using two different coloured t-shirts!

You will now have six strips of material. To make this into three strips you will need to twist two pieces together until you get the three sections.

Step five

Now you are ready to start your plait. To do this you need to move the section on the right over the centre piece of material, and swap which hands are holding them. The right section becomes the centre section, and the centre section is now on the right. Then you do the same with the left hand side.

Step six

Once you have plaited around three quarters of the material use another piece of material to secure it in place. To do this tie a knot twice to make sure it’s a secure fastening. Now you are ready to see if your dog enjoys the new toy!
