Design + Engineering: Where Next?

What we do

People in Design + Engineering are responsible for iPlayer and BBC Sounds. They make BBC websites and mobile apps. They maintain and build the technology used on your favourite programmes.

Our teams get TV and radio broadcasts from studios into your homes, cars and devices. Some teams in D+E are developing technologies so advanced, it'll change your life years from now.

Working at BBC Design + Engineering, you'll experience unique creative and technical challenges, working hand in hand with the best creative minds in the UK - journalists, commissioners, and programme makers.

We have teams in London, Salford, Cardiff, Glasgow and Belfast (plus offices in over 40 countries worldwide) and strong connections in local communities wherever we are.

A short video about working in technology at the BBC.

Time to think

No other broadcaster or digital publisher operates at our scale or level of technical complexity, but there is time to think and do things right. Our funding model allows us to think long term, not be ruled by quarterly growth targets; our priority is to make people's lives better by informing, educating and entertaining them.

Pioneering research and innovation

The BBC has always been a tech pioneer, from the earliest days of broadcast, and we continue to innovate. We have the ambition and inventiveness of a tech-start up, but with an unrivalled 100 year engineering history. We have dedicated teams focused on innovation and Research & Development, building solutions for the long term.

Learning and developing

You'll keep learning and developing. There are countless development opportunities, whether you want to improve your leadership or technical skills. You'll have access to the BBC Academy, as well as the chance to go on placements, attend conferences, seminars and many others.

Open to all

The BBC is open and welcoming to everyone. We combine a uniquely diverse set of skills from broadcast engineers to UX designers - some of us take pride in specialist technical subjects, some are fiercely creative. There are thriving LGBT, BAME, and Women in STEM groups that get support and investment from the BBC to develop and reach out to others.
