Archives for July 2012
Just like I said on tonight's show, this is freeform focus at its finest. Showing real potential to spiral off into outer space but somehow bringing it right back to 3.48 of pure pop, Todays Supernatural is as creatively inspiring to those with a freewheeling tendency as you're going to get today.
From Australia return the world's most exciting psychedelic groove machine Tame Impala with a little stomp in the mix on tonight's Hottest Record Elelphant. How appropriate . You know, elephants... stomping. That's not even funny. Tame Impala rule. Later.
Hey it's Huw in for Zane tonight. Hottest Record is massive and it's by Crystal Castles. As you'd expect from Alice and Ethan it's a heavy, bass-ridden filth monster which sounds amazing. Turn it up!
Understandable that an artist as independent of vision as DJ Shadow would find the idea of a best of somewhat unnerving. Fans on the other hand will be thrilled at the opening of archives and the re-contextualisation of 20 years' worth of great music. Here's to the next.
The most striking and minimal song on the new Bat For Lashes album is also the first we hear of the Haunted Man. This unorthodox move for many is business as usual for this brave artist who always puts song first. Brilliant.
Two Door Cinema make one of the biggest returns of the week and year so far with new single 'Sleep Alone'. This band have forged a path thru 'the pop years' thru hard work and great songs and found themselves on the verge of even bigger things with
new album 'Beacon' due soon.
Whist the majority of energy directed towards the forthcoming Olympics seems to be focusing on its failings right now, credit must be given to those in the Olympic A&R dept. Dephic join Muse, The Chemical Brothers, Dizzee Rascal & Sir Elton in officially sound tracking the 2012 games. Big in the games!
Currently ensconced in Ohio at the time of writing, The Gaslight Anthem are one step closer to the release of album number four, Handwritten. The title track, being tonight's Hottest Record, is a super strong indication that it's going to be another very direct, very classic sounding Gaslight album.
The worst kept secret was finally unveiled tonight as The xx return with the first piece of new music from their forthcoming new album Coexist. Everything you loved about The xx is in evidence here but more realised and, and as the album title would suggest, more unified. Beautiful.
From a forthcoming EP, the first of two in quick succession, comes Careless a brand new Hottest Record from Jack Beats. Heavy in craft and meticulous in its arrangement, this carries its emotion and feel into the club with grace. A turning point record.
Hi, Dan P Carter in for Zane, here's Gerard Way of off My Chems colaborating with dance legend Deadmau5. I think this is something that Gerard has been yearning for since the last album from My Chems. watch this space for simiar sonics from the next album. LISTEN
Not one but two noteworthy returns form two bands that first crossed our path toward the start of my time at Radio 1. It's no surprise that both The Killers and Bloc Party continue to make exciting and relevant sounding rock records but it is surprise that we're still here to play them. LOL. Welcome back boys. Let's go.
