Wales Writer in Residence - Announcing the Longlist

We are delighted to announce the Longlist of the inaugural Wales Writer in Residence 2019.

It’s been a joy reading through the submissions and we’re excited about the wealth of writing talent the initiative has uncovered. All 17 of the final longlisted scripts are original, contemporary, memorable dramas that show real authorial flair.

14. Oh! You Pretty Things  (Rachel Harper)
15. Pulse  (Leila Navabi)
16. Relics  (Sian Owen)
17. You, the Jury  (Sarah Louise Madden)

The final shortlist will be announced on the 18th September. Those final scripts will then be judged by screenwriter Matthew Hall, BBC Radio 4 Drama Commissioner Alison Hindell, Artistic Director of National Theatre Wales Kully Thiarai, Development Executive, BBC Studios Wales Jenna Robbins and BBC Writersroom Wales Development Producer Helen Perry.

The winning writer will be announced at an award ceremony on 2nd October at the Sherman Theatre.

The winning writer will then be awarded a total bursary of £12,000 to assist their year-long placement as Wales Writer in Residence. Over the 12 months they’re in post they’ll be offered two consecutive residencies; an initial 6 months with BBC Cymru Wales including working with BBC Studios, followed by 6 months with NTW gaining bespoke mentoring and training, and access to expertise and contacts. In addition their winning script will be commissioned, developed and produced for BBC Radio 4 and/or BBC Sounds.

The Wales Writer in Residence is a prestigious new scheme, aimed at furthering a writer’s career across a portfolio of media and which includes a guaranteed broadcast credit.

It is a partnership between BBC Cymru Wales and National Theatre Wales, along with BBC Writersroom Wales, with the intention of supporting new writing talent.

Bydd y rhestr fer derfynol yn cael ei chyhoeddi ar 18 Medi. Yna caiff y sgriptiau terfynol hynny eu beirniadu gan yr awdur sgrin Matthew Hall, Comisiynydd Drama BBC Radio 4 Alison Hindell, Cyfarwyddwr Artistig National Theatre Wales Cymru Kully Thiarai, Swyddog Gweithredol Datblygu. BBC Studios Cymru Jenna Robbins a Chynhyrchydd Datblygu BBC Writersroom Cymru, Helen Perry.

Bydd yr awdur buddugol yn cael ei gyhoeddi mewn seremoni wobrwyo ar 2il Hydref yn Theatr y Sherman.

Yna dyfernir i'r awdur buddugol gyfanswm bwrsari o £12,000 i gynorthwyo â'i leoliad am flwyddyn fel Awdur Preswyl Cymru.
