Simply THE BEST drama on BBC for 20 years. Unpredictable but not too entangled for anyone to follow (as LoD is). Sarah Lancashire deserves all the awards possible. But supporting cast are just brilliant too, especially her sister. I am having withdrawal symptoms from not seeing it. Especially with all the foreign drama being thrown at us by a BBC who seem too lazy to look for home grown talent. Easier to buy it in I suppose. Sad as BBC used to be KNOWN for its great drama 20 years ago.

Brilliant. Brilliant acting, brilliant script, brilliant directing. Simply brilliant.

Loved this series as I have lived in this area the Calder valley many years ago. Shot in
such a realistic way, I was looking out for places and localities I knew and the building
material of sandstone grit. Sarah Lancashire as Catherine was superb and her sister was good. The trouble came with the way they mouthed there lines as if they didn't have to fully articulate(they were just talking to each other), you had to watch with subtitles on to follow the story. Catherine was wise beyond her years and could see through people, but she was also at times possibly close to madness in her rage. Also the way they played out the story of the suspect police officer(John) and the way the part was acted. It put me in mind of another excellent police series The Line of Duty.
Without the BBC what would we do to find such excellence?

Tremendous show. I've been a police officer for sixteen years here in the United States. State of Idaho. The city where I work has approximately 50,000 residents. It is a working class city still heavily dependent on agriculture. Approximately 25% of our population lives below the poverty line and only about 30% of the population has any higher education. We have our issues with Meth, Heroin, marijuana, rampant drinking and domestic violence as well as gangs and a large population of undocumented aliens from Mexico and Central America. However it is also my home where my wife and I have raised our family. Though "Happy Valley" occurs in a different country under a different legal and political system somehow it feels very truthful. This show captures the feeling of being a police officer in a semi-rural more improvished community not to mention showing police officers warts and all. Though fictional it's very watchable. I was very happy to see the second season today on Netflixs. I've already watched two episodes, but then I had to go to work. I'll finish it tommorow. Very pleased to learn that it has been picked up for a third season.

"Our" joint musings-
1)Re: "closing shots"
"Catherine" realises there's 50% of "Ryan" that she dislikes (?)
2)Series 3 ideas - perhaps more of "Frances";how did her sister die?
more of "Ilinka", "Winnie" and the Halifax Mafia/Biscuit factory
more of good guys Neil and Clare's sobriety challenges
3)A Fast paced, realistic dialogue delivered by geniuses behind and in front of the camera ! But the writing was the unanimous " best " (in our opinions).
4)When will series 1 be repeated? (we all want to see what we missed)

As I'd seen this already and as we're all off school with flu,I introduced my two teenagers to this series straight through (episodes 2-6) on i-player and asked them which ,in their opinion was best; the acting, the camera work/photography, the written dialogue, the direction/pace or the concept/story
We're still debating/discussing/arguing/talking/agreeing 8 hours later!
More "Northern Noir" please

I think it's a bit of a joke asking stars to pass comments on t/v shows as they always make favourable comments . I have spoken to many people in our clubs and they are unanimous to the fact that the sound track ,particularly when Sarah Lancashire spoke, was so inaudible that they switched off from what was a good prog.

Absolutely Brilliant . Sarah Lancashire must get a BAFTA for this performance at least! Long way from Raquel, but still memorable
Please let's have Series 3

One small point re continuity, referred to East Lothian re checking Frances' background in Linlithgow. Linlithgow is in West Lothian!
