How bad is your 3G phone signal?

Do you have trouble getting the most of out of that expensive smartphone because your operator's 3G network just isn't up to scratch? If so, Radio 4's Today programme would like to know about your problems.

iPhoneMany iPhone users have been complaining for months that they're not getting the service they expect because O2's network is overloaded. I called last year to complain about the patchy coverage in my area of west London where the 3G symbol often just disappears from my phone - and was told there was a problem with a dead patch where the network had not been able to install a new mast.

Just after Christmas, Ronan Dunne, O2's chief executive, admitted that he was very disappointed in the network's performance in London and blamed it on the explosion in data use by all those proud smartphone owners, who'd acquired iPhone apps and were determined to use them. But he insisted that the problem was restricted to the capital and was being eased by major investment in the network.

So what's your experience of this and other 3G networks? Is O2 any worse than Orange or Vodafone which now both have the iPhone as well as a range of other data-hungry phones? And is it true that the problem is restricted to the capital - or are there other problem areas, where 3G coverage is supposed to be there but often fades away.

My impression is that they're facing huge strains as millions of people discover that modern phones are mini-computers which can do all sorts of clever things online - if the networks are up to it.

So let us know your experiences.

    Just been on holiday to the north of scotland with my Iphone stopping off at various places on the east coast mainline

    - London Euston - good 02 2G signal, poor intermittment availability of 3G network

    - Newcastle patchy 3G coverage, ok around train station less good as you moved around the city centre

    - Edinburgh good 2G coverage and signal, no availability of 3G as far as I could determine

    - Aviemore good 2G coverage although large network outages as you moved around the highlands

    - Inverness good 2G/3G coverage although didnt use it alot as the hotel had WIFI :D

    - Orkney no 3G coverage, intermittment variable quality 2G coverage.

    I would think any question of problems with a 3G signal would be better served if the photo you have illustrating your blog isn't of someone using a jailbroken iPhone, which could always be used as an excuse as to why the signal isn't very good!

    I live in central London (N1) and can't get a 3G signal at all. I'm lucky even if I get a '1 bar' phone reception. Ever since I joined O2 with my 3G iPhone I've had constant network problems and their 3G reception and speed is incredibly poor. Even at work (SE1) where my phone shows a full reception, the network 3G speed is rubbish.
    My contact with O2 is now up and I'll be moving to Orange.

    My Iphone 3G has been terrible. I often get a pop-up saying I have missed a call and there is a message, when the call itself has not come through on the phone. The Internet access is patchy and so slow. I think it is a great gadget but a very poor phone and will likely change back to Nokia at the end of the contract. I don't know if it's o2 or the phone, but the combined experience is very poor overall. I'm primarily based in Watford and cannot be classed as a high usage user.

    Nokia on Orange has been the most reliable phone system I have ever experienced and I am likely to return to them. I wish I'd just bought an ipod for all the expense and disappointment the iphone has given me. o2 shops service on the iPhone when I had probelms has also been awful, putting me off o2 for life. In the end I decided to live with the faults rather than do battle with o2 shops to get it fixed properly.

    I've got an iphone on o2 and have recently found out they actually sold me the phone with a 2G SIM card which couldn't even be used to find a 3G network. I live in Kent near Bluewater and work in Brentwood, Essex and in both areas there is little to no 3G availability for 3G. If I had to rate o2's 3G service out of 10 I would give it 2.

    I've had a smartphone since 2006 and I moved to another provider from O2 six months after buying it because the mobile internet was poor or nonexistant, and this was before the iPhone was even released. Having said that, increasingly these days I'm often told by my handset that I have a full 3G signal yet can't seem to load any web pages. Presumably this means I can get on the 3G network but it's so clogged that I can't move once I'm on it, which makes perfect sense what with the recent 'smartphone explosion'. Internet service providers in general, be they mobile or otherwise, need to start considering their scalability and stop advertising "unlimited" services that they simply can't provide.

    I frequently have no 3G signal living in south London.

    I am often even unable to make calls due to problems with the 3G network and have been told to turn 3G off in order to make calls!!!! Surely O2 should have known that this was going to take off like it did and been better prepared, I have a friend at O2 who tells me that these problems are going to continue for the forseeable future and there is no action we can take against O2.

    If i could i would switch providers straight away.

    I work in the center of bath, no 3g, I live in the outskirts of Bristol no 3g.

    Call quality generally on O2 pathetic and i get constant complaints from others that they cant hear me.

    love my Iphone, 02 just not up to the job, and so will switch to back orange as soon as I can

    According to the O2 coverage map on their own website, I should be getting HSDPA/3.5G. I'm in SE5, there are no tall buildings around me and there is no reason for the signal to degrade.

    According to my iPhone, I'm just about getting EDGE, let alone 3G. The Speedtest app tells me I'm getting 23kps down and 3 kps up.

    In my experience the O2 network has got much worse over the last few months; and it wasn't much good to begin with.

    Fortunately my contract is up in a couple of weeks, so I'm off.

    I've had an iPhone for around 2 years, firstly the 2G version and since September, a 3GS. O2's 3G coverage is disappointing in the North East, particularly in Durham City where I live. A very small city of around 60,000 residents and yet 3G is available on one side of the city but not the other which is disappointing. Newcastle is very patchy and as for the smaller towns in the suburbs, practically nothing. At home I use WiFi but without it, there is no 3G coverage.

    I spend a lot of time in the Lake District, particularly Kendal and coverage there is not good for 3G either. Similarly, I spend a lot of time in the Scottish Highlands where you just have to be pleased if you even get a signal! Inverness and the major towns are fine, albeit 2G only but as for the islands and more remote areas Vodafone seem to be the only network with a commitment to the highland community.

    I wouldn't say that I'd be rushing to move to Orange or Vodafone because of it, but I would like to see O2 increasing their 3G coverage and capacity because it makes for a big difference moving between WiFi and 2G/EDGE networks. In fact, I chose 3 for my Mobile Broadband dongle as their coverage is much more reliable than O2's.

    I live in Kent and 3G just isn't available here. Mind you, phone signal strength is only 1 bar so that isn't good either.

    I live just outside Edinburgh and work in the city. I have no problems with getting 3G or 3.5G signals and never really have - the one exception is a little patch on the train line just before Newbridge.

    Perhaps it's because I use a phone that has a decent receiver?

    Having been in an O2 shop recently and seen first hand how hard they are pushing their 3G wireless dongle (to link a laptop to the internet) I would guess that these would be hogging more bandwidth than the light surfing that generally goes on on smartphones.

    Coverage is one issue but what is going to be more of an issue going forward is the inadequate capacity to cope with the apps that the iPhone and other similar smart phones offer. Network operators today are focussed on providing data services in 5 MHz channels using HSPA and HSPA+. It is simply a matter of physics, you will only achieve a finite capacity in a 5 MHz channel using current 3G technologies. The operators are effectively sweating their assets and are reluctant to offer other technology solutions which are optimised for data such as LTE or WiMAX for a variety of reasons. LTE for instance involves a truck roll (replace or overlay onto the existing network) and currently doesn't support voice (the operator's cash cow). So until the operators move forward with so called 4G technologies utilising channels of at least 10 MHz then we will continue to feel the pain of slow connection speeds. One has to ask why the capability of the iPhone has to be "doctored" for the TV commercial in order to show the variety of apps in non real time. Consumers will demand mobile broadband at the speeds we currently experience on our fixed broadband connections, currently we are being short changed.

    I work in the NorthWest of England, various areas in Cumbria... 3G signals are at best intermittant in a lot of areas.

    I am an O2 iPhone user living in Hythe (near Southampton) and as far as I can see, there is no 3G signal anywhere west of Southampton Water. The only time I can get a usable 3G signal is when I get into Southampton itself.

    My iPhone 3G account with T-mobile here in the Netherlands is very patchy. I travel by train most days on one of the most important business routes in the country, and reception varies constantly from 3G to basic GPRS to GSM and sometimes nothing at all. Talking to other iPhone users, many feel they've been conned by the desirability of the phone itself, without getting any true value out of the service providers Apple have signed up to support it.

    I use blackberry bold on vodafone in bristol, and the journey into work is from the outskirts right into the centre. And for at least half the journey, my 3G just stops dead. A few times I've even had it go just to emergency calls only. Its not really what I was expecting from this contract.

    I live in the Yorkshire Dales. Good 2G would be nice forget 3G and I can get a signal sitting in the bathroom or at the bottom of the garden on 3. In this village each network works in a different place so Vodafone 2G fine here but not 100m away where O2 works. For 3's mobile broadband, when landline broadband down (another rural problem), I have to drive 8 miles to get a signal which unfortunately means I am surrounded by gunfire from the army on the ranges near Catterick.
    Not enough customers say the providers, yet we get going on for a million visitors to this area each year.

    I live in Tewkesbury and there is no O2 3G service. Even the standard service is poor. Step into a building and your signal is gone. On work trips to London and travelling through other major cities, the 3G signal and bandwidth available is hit and miss. I've just spent 4 weeks in New Zealand, and I had a strong 3G signal everywhere I needed it, that included all major towns, major roads and even the small communities we passed through. I had a data abroad bundle from O2 that allowed me to use 200Mb of data whilst overseas and it was great to use the internet on my phone properly. The mobile data provision in the UK is an embarrassment, O2 should not be allowed to sell a service they are not obviously providing. No doubt their shareholders are reaping the rewards of all the iphone subscribers O2 have signed up over the last few years.

    I have had the iPhone 3GS for a while now and have always had a very good 3G signal in and around the town centre of Chesterfield. It does drop in and out of it which can be annoying at times but I find even the 2G signal is acceptable for general web browsing. O2 do need to push to expand their 3G coverage however or people like Orange will pass them soon.

    I live in North Hertfordshire. I picked up the Iphone 3GS last year and checked on O2's website for my home and work coverage. Both showed greaty strong signal, however reality hit home after my iPhone was delivered. My 3G signal is non-existant at home, but is strong at work. Although it is strong at work the throughput of the network is nothing short of terrible. I rarely get anything more than a maximum of about 0.2Mbps. I know is probably contention, however you'd expect O2 bods to have been more on the ball with regards to their network to ensure it was upto the task of all this data.

    Overall, I love my iPhone however the 3G data coverage/performance is waaaay below even what I would say was par.

    I'm based in Reading, I live out in the suburbs and work just next to the M4. Most of the time I keep my O2 iPhone in 2G because I find there is very little speed gain from switching over to 3G, the O2 network seems to be pretty slow in 3G. I have to admit the Edge performance is better than I thought it would be but without the 3G working at a decent speed the network performance is not would I would like it to be.

    Also when I'm at work the 3G reception is not that great and the iPhone appears to be very poor at handing over between 3G and 2G, it doesn't transition smoothly, if I lose 3G it will often go out of service for a few minutes before it eventually decides to go back over to GSM.

    Fortunately in Reaidng I find that I am on WiFi a lot so it's not too bad. I'm very glad I get the Cloud access.

    I've used 3G in many locations in Nottingham, Loughborough and Grimsby a fair amount using three separate networks, O2, Orange and T-Mobile. T-Mobile is considerably better than the other two in all locations. See

    I live in Brentwood Essex. I have had a 3G capable iphone since Apple launched both the 3G and now the 3GS. I am really unfortunate to have an o2 contract because the o2 3G signal here simply does not exist. My experience when travelling to other areas is that even when there is an o2 3G signal this soon dissappears when I attempt to access any data. Please ask the CEO of o2 why they have been happy to take my money but are simply umprepared to invest in an adequate 3G infrastructure.

    I get disapointing coverage on o2 with my iPhone...

    When I rang o2 I went through a lengthy procedure, resting network settings etc and still no joy. They suggested taking it back to Apple in the end, sounds like they are trying to shift the blame for bad network coverage!

    Calling o2 on my iPhone is free...this must be great for o2 seeing as I never have any signal and therefore can't call them!

    Its infuriating that I now spend over £50 a month on my phone bill, and yet i had better signal topping up £10 a month before!

    I live 8 miles south of Worcester, in a rural area. I never get a 3G signal on my O2 iPhone at home, and the phone signal is often patchy, drops calls, or callers cannot hear me. However, when my brother visits, he is on 3G straight away with Orange! Unless O2 improves their coverage over the next couple of months, I shall have no hesitation in changing back to Orange (or Vodaphone) when I'm out of contract - the signal quality is just not there with O2. They are spoiling what is otherwise a truly great product.

    I've had a iPhone 3Gs since last August from 02 store. Great work tool but poor phone, which I put down to the 02 3G network here in Hertfordshire (home town of T-Mobile UK and only 5 miles from the M25!) Missed calls (phone does not ring). Calls going direct to voicemail (again phone does not ring). No Service message happens at least 3 times a week. I'm monitoring the situation and if the 02 network does not improve and other providers can handle the 3G usage better, then I will not hesitate in migrating back to Vodafone or other.

    I was an o2 customer for years before getting an iPhone and have be very disappointed with connection coverage in general since getting it, I wonder if its more a problem with the iPhone than o2 as I recall reading an article about AT&T customers in America having coverage problems with iPhone also

    I have lived at several locations over the past few years. Almost all of them have had useless reception from O2 with their Customer Service always telling me "You should be able to receive 3g in your area. Try resetting your network settings." Or the more common one: "We don't have any problems with out network at the moment Sir" despite being nationally reported by the BBC and other media sources that O2's network consistantly falls over due to the high volume of network traffic.

    Some of the area's I have lived at:

    Inverness: Excellent 3G signal in City Centre, outskirts of Inverness 1 bar if I'm lucky with no data capabilities.

    Aberdeen: Excellent 3G reception almost anywhere in the city centre, and decent in the outskirts but experienced far too many "Network connection unavailable" messages.

    Banbury: Adequate 3G signal, but significant periods with Network Unavailable.

    Carlisle: Adequate 3G signal, but again, significant periods with Network Unavailable messages.

    Maryport, West Cumbria: No 3G signal, rarely an Edge signal and almost constant Network Unavailable messages. It's an excitement when I get a data signal! Most of the time I operate on basic 1 bar reception where phone calls cut off consistantly, texts won't send, etc.

    Customer Services tell me I should be experiencing full reception in this last region, but as I live just outside Maryport I get almost no signal whatsoever. Phone rings showing numbers from people I know but often there is no one at the other end. I have complained several times and get a "goodwill" gesture of money off my bill, always off the same named representative strangely enough. No resolutions and no one has ever bothered to phone me and check about the service, despite requests being left. VERY VERY unhappy with O2 and will definitely be leaving them as soon as my contract expires. Having the best deals for the iPhone means nothing when you cannot use any of the services.

    P.S. I have also experienced no 3G signal in London when visiting. Very frustrating... Just what ARE we paying for? The iPhone tariffs are not cheap either.

    I have used my iPhone 3GS all over the south west and O2's 3G coverage is extremely poor. Whether you are in Bristol and get a good 3G signal, the speed is so slow it makes for such a poor user experience.

    If you go to some of the smaller towns you may get 3G for a few seconds, but it soon disapears and you feel you would be better off using smoke signals!

    I live outside Reading in Earley and I am on 3 network, they are terrible for coverage in a lot of places, but especially inside any houses! You can have full signal and on 3G if you put your phone outside the window, bring it inside and it barely manages to get one bar of 2G signal! I was told that they would be also using the Orange 3G network to improve coverage, but this has not helped at all either.

    I also have the same problem as Stevehayes (above) where when there is the transition between 2G and 3G I lose ability to do anything that needs signal, like sending texts. The other thing is that quite often texts go over into two messages and I will receive the first half, and stay in the same place with good signal etc, but not receive the second half of the text for hours, sometimes not even until the next day! These networks need to get their acts together, and work together where they have good signal and capaicty for data.

    I have an iPhone on the o2 network. I actually disable my 3G connection unless I'm using data now because I find when I leave it enabled I drop calls and SMS messages. A search on technical forums suggests this is because the 3G network is oversubscribed and many others are having similiar problems.

    In my initial call to o2 they said it could be my SIM card and as expected they are not accepting it could be anything other than individual handset faults causing the problem.

    I'm paying £35 a month to have access to unlimited data on my iPhone and due to these network problems spend most of my time connected to the 2G network that I had access to on my £10 a month contract.

    Not happy but what can you do if o2 refuse to accept there is anything wrong?

    Any signal is hard to get from O2 in my home just South of Lancaster. I'll be switching to Vodafone ASAP because my wife gets a good signal from them on her phone.

    Even in Chichester, West Sussex the network is obviously overloaded at times. Running a Nokia N86 on O2 one can generally get a 3G or even 3.5G signal for data but download speeds are typically slow and from time to time will virtually stop. Often one also finds a "Can't find network gateway" message - more prevalent at certain times of the day of course. Moving around the country, outside main city areas, the story is much the same.

    I have a T Mobile G2 Touch (HTC Hero elsewhere) and generally the 3g / HSDPA (3.5G) coverage in the suburbs of Birmingham is pretty good. In fact I'd say most of Birmingham is pretty good for it.

    Had a slow down in Stratford Upon Avon, but not too bad. Used it London and it was generally pretty OK too, maybe T Mobile are better than the rest for 3G?? Could it be that all the 'trendy' iPhone users are clogging up and killing off O2? (if so please don't switch!)

    As a 'smart phone' business user of 5+ years, principally using Microsoft Windows mobile based phones (as the I-Phone had/has restrictive O2 contracts and up until recently, poor integration with laptops), I have found even to date the coverage and speed of 3G services 'sporadic' at best in terms of the quality of the coverage and purported download speeds available.

    My use spreads across the south coast, into central London and occasionally in the north of england with Vodafone now, but for 5+ years previously with T-mobile, whom are about the same in my view in terms of quality of service.

    Whilst the speeds have increased overall in this time period, in my view the QoS (Quality of Service) hasn't necessarily kept pace and I never (i repeat NEVER!) get the download speeds purported to be available via the services I have bought.

    Much like the broadband providers whom for years have 'conned' us into believing we will get the high speeds with their services. Only to find you get somewhat less, and the service operators are not to blame because of the popular caveat it provids saying 'Up to...' for certain speeds in the small print.

    'More work to be done' by the 3G service operators in my view, especially around getting the service you actually pay for and having the 'Up to...' like statements removed from the marketing/sales pitches.

    Orange already have much better 3G coverage then O2. In fact Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile and '3' all have better 3G and HSDPA coverage then O2.

    Unfortunately, when all of the networks were investing in upgrading there cell sites to 3G, O2 were upgrading to EDGE because of the iPhone 2G.

    I bought my iPhone(O2) in Lincoln but live in Market Rasen. Lincoln itself has reasonable 3G coverage, Market Rasen has no 3G. Lincolnshire in general has no 3G coverage.

    I would not have bought the phone has I realised the poor 3G coverage in my area and UK in general. I appreciate that its not cost effective to have 100% 3G coverage but relying on GPS to load Google maps is painful.

    I won't be renewing my contract when it runs out and will likely return to Vodafone.

    I have never had 3G coverage on my iphone and would have thought living in London we should have the best signal here! I have a new generation, but not the 3GS. I pay £50 a month for pretty poor signal really, the 3G sign has never appeared in nearly a year on my phone.

    I think its not so much the quality of the network but the quality of phones themselves. I have recently upgraded to a Nokia 5800 from a Nokia 6500s (both are 3G phones). The 3G reception (Orange) on the 6500s here in deepest darkest somerset was tempremental at best and even standard network signal was hit and miss at times. Since the upgrade to the 5800 3G reception has dramatically improved. So unless Orange has miraculously upgraded my local transmitter at the exact same moment my new phone sprang into life I would say this marked performance increase is down to the build of the phone and not the network.

    I agree the network providers still have a lot of work to do on the quality of the 3G network but part of the problem judging from my own experience and by some of the other comments made here must lie with the manufacturers of the phones.

    I have recently been put onto O2 with a Palm Pre by my employer - previously had Orange service on a SPV M3100

    I must say that the O2 3G service is absolutely appalling compared to Orange in the Bristol area and in general as i travel around the country

    Also general signal strength from O2 very poor in this region - my palm pre regularly loses ALL networks as I move around my home in North Somerset when my Orange phone and services did not.

    As an I.T. manager and worker it is crucial that my mobile still works in the server rooms I look after - my Orange pda did - my O2 Palm Pre does NOT

    Overall stunningly unimpressed with O2 and Palm Pre - but could be one or the other bringing the other down.

    I live in a village 20 miles north of Norwich. O2 3G coverage in the whole of North Norfolk is very patchy. In my village one can wander around for days trying to catch a signal. To be able to use the connected bits of my very clever phone I need to drive into Norwich city centre, or go out on the pier at Cromer (I exaggerate, but it feels that way sometimes). In rural England we need some highly positive discrimination in funding for rolling out improvements to both phone and broadband networks.

    I was a vodafone customer for well over 10 years and only changed to 02 to get the iphone, the reception on o2 is terrible. I live in Reading and the signal is contantly dropping, worse when inside shopping centres. 3G is very tempermental, more times if off than on. With vodafone i never lost the signal. As soon as my contract end with o2 i will be switching back to vodafone as they now are offering the iphone. I think o2 will lose alot of customers due the their terrible reception.

    O2 is the only signal I can receive in my house - I don't live anywhere remote (about 5 miles west of Cardiff) it's just a geographical oddity. However going around South Wales I get 3G in Cardiff city centre (mostly it can be patchy) but I've never got anything other than a 2G signal anywhere else. But as I do most of my web browsing indoors I've usually got a wifi signal I can use so it doesn't really affect what I can do

    I think O2 in Central London. I live in Islington N1 - I get no coverage in my house or in a few surrounding streets. I work in EC4 - I get no 3G coverage, and intermittent Edge/2G coverage. These are both Central London, Zone 1 locations, not the middle of nowhere.

    When I was able to unlock my iPhone I got PAYG SIMs for all the other networks. 3 had the best coverage in my home and work locations, but I know from previous experience that it's not so good in rural areas. T-mobile and Orange were more patchy but Vodafone gave solid signals at work and home, so that's who I'm moving to.

    Knowing that the coverage in rural counties such as Dorset where I live is worse than patchy, I find it staggering that companies such as Vodafone can extort £160 for an Access Gateway so that contract customers can enjoy mobile phone coverage let alone 3G coverage.

    Having said that this new technology does work very well and I now have 24/7 capability for the first time in the 24 years that I have had a mobile phone. I am not sure my wife is in favour!

    I live and work in WC1, just off Grays Inn Road. There is consistently no 3G signal on O2 here, in fact I'm lucky to have more than one or two bars of a non 3G signal. Previously I was on Vodafone which was no better in this location.

    I tried an experiment of listening to a radio station via 3G driving from Enfield into central London. This was a proxy to looking at the 3G indicator on my phone to see how consistent the signal was. The result was that around 50% of the 16 mile journey had a 3G signal consistent enough to buffer the internet radio station.

    If you can't get a decent 3G signal in central London, where can you expect to?

    I live in Wiltshire.
    The O2 3G contract was a waste of money, I can only get 3G in the middle of Salisbury,
    elsewhere nothing, not even Edge. I have turned off the 3G option as it improves the
    pathetic battery life on my iphone.
    Iphone turned out to be an awful choice – the apps are good but as a phone – all I can say is: Apple – go look at a Nokia – that's what we want from a phone!.
    Will go back to a Nokia + Orange at the end of the contract.

    I purchased my iPhone 3GS in June 2009, on a 24 month contract with O2 now at £35 per month. I get a decent call and text allowance and as we all know, no iPhone must be sold without a data plan and mine is no exception, unlimited internet and Wi-Fi... useless! most of the time i don't even bother. at home and almost everywhere else i go i am on o2's unreliable and increadably slow GPRS network (2G) and at sixth form im on EDGE which makes a noticable difference, removes about 3-4 minutes off downloading a song from iTunes but it is still not enough. The only area Norfolk that receives a 3G signal on o2 is the dead-center of Thetford town and in the heart of Norwich, and some of the outskirts too. don't get me wrong though, when im on O2's 3G network it is predominantly faster than my Wi-Fi but I am fed up with knowing that i can not use my iPhone fully until i am in Norwich - 20 miles away! as far as im concerned O2 has made no differences in their 3G network coverage since they got their hands on the iPhone, oh, except the constant network issues- for almost a week last year, O2's network decided to deliver our MMS messages to who ever it wanted!! I was on the 3 UK network for 2 years prior to getting my iPhone, the only reason i left was to get the phone, now O2 have unlocked my iPhone for free and i can be on any network i want. i dont want Orange because their 2G coverage and calling quality are poor in my area, Vodafone have a terrible customer relations policy and T-mobile are being phased out, plus their coverage is worse than their new owners-Orange. as far as im concerned, i will be moving my self and my iPhone back to the 3 network ASAP! they have the largest 3G and HSDPA network in the UK, despite claims from Orange and i know their 2G is Orange but i dont need to worry about that because i was hardly ever on it. I dont know why 3 did not get the iPhone in the first place, what was Apple thinking, putting their brand new 3G phones on the UK's worst excuse for a 3G network, come on O2!!! listen to your customers.

    I live in SW London and have an iPhone, I find the 3G signal patchy but also find that even when I have signal that doesn't mean I can connect. The iPhone seems to 'think' about things for ages before I get a result.

    I know from past experience that Orange has a better signal at my home than 02 so I'll probably switch to them. Actually my contract with 02 finishes today but I'm waiting for the big Apple 'announcement' in 2 weeks to see if they are tweaking the 3GS before getting a new phone.

    I work for a major high street phone retailer in the middle of Cardiff. A colleague and I both own iPhones, mine on Orange and his on O2. In theory, according to the signal coverage maps, we should both get good 3G signal all around the city center. However, this is not the case for him.
    Admittedly, the buidling we work in does have a few tall buildings around it, and that can effect signal. However, it should in theory also effect my signal. Despite us both having similar phones in a similar situation, my phone continually receives better signal and has much better connectivity to the network. I generally receive 3 to 4 bars of 3G signal, whereas he often struggles to connect even through Edge, and this has gotten worse over time.
    At the start of his contract period it wasn't too bad. You could forgive the occasional connection error or dip in signal, it was to be expected. As time has gone on and more people have had iPhones and similarly data hungry devices, it has become harder for him to connect to the network. It has got to the point where on busy days in town - for example match days - he often misses phone calls and will only receive text messages hours after they were sent.
    Orange, generally speaking, haven't carried as many handsets which use so much data, although this is changing. As such, at the moment, my signal is fine and I generally get decent 3G signal wherever I am. As time goes on, though, I wouldn't be surprised if this starts to drop off. I just don't believe the networks were ready with the infrastructure to handle this much data, despite in recent years encouraging us to use these services through releasing more smart phones and devices such as USB modem dongles that eat up data.

    And, a note to those who need to switch 3G reception off on their phones - it's actually a good idea to do this anyway unless you are certain you are receiving good 3G signal. When you have 3G switched on your phone will constantly be searching for stronger 3G signal, and this can be a big drain on your battery (and with the iPhone's battery as it is, you don't want that). Really, you only need 3G for data usage, so if you're only making calls and texts, keeping 3G switched off is a good idea.

    I live north of Poole, Dorset with an iPhone. O2's signal is rubbish. 3G is non-existent, and in my house I can't make or receive phone calls at all most of the time. O2 have unlocked the phone and I've tried an Orange SIM. Results are the same or worse.

    Obviously I can use my land line to make calls at home, and use WiFi for data. But not being able to give my mobile number to people reduces the usefulness of the phone considerably, and must detract from O2's revenues from it.

    I've been with o2 longer than I care to remember. Of late the whole network or company has nosedived. I had a Blackberry (excelent handset and reception etc) I was due to up grade and purchased an Iphone 3GS I think the phone is fantastic but is let down by no 3G where I live (dispite being assured there was) The phone keeps loosing 2G signal often to the extent of no service. When I confront o2 the answer is "we are not experiancing problems in your area" ( Ok so why do I have to contact you via email or landline then???) and as for 3G there is no intention of it coming to me. So really I'm wasting a good phone and money on a contract I'm locked into with no way of getting out of. (Incidently Orange and Vodafone work here on 3G)

    I have been with Orange for years and I have found their network coverage to be the best for both 2G/3G connectivity. Obviously the strength of their network has been a big plus for those people who wish to get an iPhone now is available on that network. The huge range of applications available from the app store means that more people wish to download and use them putting a bigger strain on networks. It appears O2 have not invested enough into network expansion and improvement and consequently as people have taken up the iPhone on o2 the bandwidth available to users has reduced. This will be especially obvious in built up areas. As the iPhone becomes more available on other networks it should start to ease as people move away from O2. Also individuals may also move to an AnDroid based phone which may or may not be locked to a specific network. Basically I think that Free WiFi access needs to be improved dramatically in the UK so users can jump on to that network instead. I did hear that the goverment were looking to sell of another radio band which may be used for a future '4G' network. This country is a long way behind others in terms of free wi-fi access.     o2 have GSM only, all other networks have full HSDPA, can't wait till my iPhone contract ends so I can get a future model on another network.

    I live between Telford and Shrewsbury, where I wouldn't expect to get 3G (I struggle on 2G), but in Shrewsbury there seems to be only a small part of the town where 3G is available on my iPhone. Before O2 I was with '3', and they were worse. Really rather disappointing.

    I thought I was alone... The iPhone is a fantastic gadget, but a terrible phone. The apps tempt you with the possibility of being connected to any and every piece of information, wherever you are, whatever you are doing but the reality is vastly different. Launch email and receive "Cannot connect to server" for each account you have defined. Try hunting for a web page only for Safari to pause forthe longest time and eventually return half of the requested page, without images. I think you quickly realise you could never *rely* on any of the 3G services. They're great when they work but sadly the connectivity too often doesn't allow them to.

    I've generally had a great experience of 3G on my iPhone 3G and 3GS. Where I live in Bridgend is hardly gives me any trouble, if any, and the same goes for where I work at Coryton on the outskirts of Cardiff.

    The worst experience I get tends to be in hotels. I don't know if they deliberately block any signal so that I have to use their overpriced WiFi (as if they would), or maybe hotels just get built in stupid places!

    The only place I find I don't have a 3G signal, generally speaking, is where not many people live such as the upper Swansea Valley (you can't have it all, but being away from Swansea is a price worth paying!).

    I'm on the O2 network and never get a 3G signal at home or work. However, I've just come back from a trip to France and found that I had a 3G signal practically everywhere I went, even in a ski resort at 1,800m up in the Alps I could download my email and browse the web faster - true 3G speeds - than in a major UK city. Coverage in a lot of places in the UK is simply rubbish or non-existent.

    I will be leaving O2 for a rival network when my contract is up for renewal.

    3G coverage is practically non-existant where I live on the Isle of Wight. The town is in a radio shadow caused by the downs to the south. The only reliable coverage is on Orange, all the others including 3 are poor. This is very localised though and sites a mile or two away are fine with respectable coverage. Mobiles are not the only thing affected, television is also patchy.

    I use a Vodaphone 3G dongle on my daily commute between Leicester and Birmingham, mostly on the return leg to check my email and look at news.

    Unfortunately I have to try and do all my downloading and opening of pages while I'm waiting for the train to depart at New Street, when the train is just pulling out, or when it stops at Nuneaton, as for quite long stretches of the journey there's no signal at all or it drops down to 2G (which often means that the signal has gone before your page loads)

    Been with Orange for 15 years. Was seriously considering switching to O2 when they launched the Iphone but had heard horror stories about their network. Glad I waited. Have had other smartphones on Orange for last 7 years and generally coverage is good. Now have an Iphone on Orange and get good 3.5G coverage in London, Surrey, Bucks, Manchester. The only place its a bit iffy is in Kent near Maidstone.

    I regularly travel from just outside Edinburgh to Bolton. While travelling through the Borders, there is virtually no 3G signal at all on my O2 iPhone 3G.

    At home, more often than not I do get a good 3G signal but it inexplicably drops randomly leaving you on the slower EDGE network...

    @41, I totally agree, I had a 6500s on Orange with 3G coverage which at best was patchy and very rarely happened, just lived with 2G - which was fine as the 6500 wasn’t really built for apps and web. I upgraded to the 5800 and the quality of 3G and 3.5G is amazing, I can be in the house and have full 3.5G on my 5800 but the 6500s only struggles one bar in the same place. I am now stuck with a choice, I will be staying with Orange in the spring but don’t know which way to go, iPhone or Nokia, I haven’t seen the quality of Orange 3G on the iPhone yet so will have to research into it.

    I think the manufactures and the operators need to work closer together to produce quality phones that can pick up the same reception as each other.

    I live in central London and regularly travel around the country too.

    Moved from O2 to Orange as my signal was practically non-existant at home...have to say it's improved allot but still not always as strong as I'd like when in buildings/underground etc...but that's to do with the phone, not the network right?

    3G seems allot faster when browsing too, so I'm happy.

    Leith seems to have a reasonably good 3G signal that is rarely overloaded and slow.

    However, I spent Christmas in Co. Durham, only a mile or two from a large town and had no 3G signal for the duration of the Christmas period. The house is in a valley and has no 3G coverage on O2.

    I've been using an iPhone 3G on Orange for the last couple of weeks in Bristol and so far the 3G coverage has on the whole been excellent, apart from in my house where even the 2G signal comes and goes - so I'm planning to use Skype over Wifi when at home.

    Question for Mr Dunne, my partner has an Iphone (she loves the phone), the phone just prior to Xmas stopped working in our area (GU10) where previously it had signal albeit intermittent 3G. She pays £45 a month now for no service, swapping her SIM to my old Nokia N82 and it works fine at GU10. I believe that these network problems (for the iphone) highlighted in many blogs should be addressed very quickly as O2 seem now to be charging people for a service they are not receiving.

    I was with Vodafone for many years and always had good 3G coverage at home in North Worcs and when I visit London. If the legend is true, their GSM network was planned in the 1980s by a former BBC engineer.

    In fact, it was so good I used to drive around listening to internet radio over 3G with hardly any drops in coverage. None at all on the motorway network.

    Having switched to O2 in the last few months, it's clear they can't cope. Not only do I not have a 3G signal at home (and I live next to a motorway), but when I visit London the data service is almost unusable.

    3G motorway coverage is particularly shocking. I can't listen to internet radio over 3G at all without regular breaks in the signal.

    I blame all the iSheep!

    I have an HTC HD2 (SIM free) and have a range of SIMs i use. In Exeter T-mobile is 'ok'. I usually get at least 3G, often HSDPA, but its not that fast. Interestingly cell location services on the phone are unreliable on T-mobile when on 3G, but ok on 2G. In my parents house on the Devon/Somerset boarder i dont even have 2G. No signal at all! Its not exactly in the middle of nowhere..

    Orange seems fine, everything works and its reasonably fast. Shame they have a poor data allowance.

    3, is poor at best. Speeds can be ok, sometimes, but are usually really really slow, sometimes the web just times out and will not work. The same is true for my mobile broadband dongle, also on 3. At work i must be right on the limit od 3G/HSDPA because the connection drops every 30 seconds when it switches between them. This maybe a quirk of the dongle though since the HD2 doesnt do it.

    I have a WinMob capable of running 3G with Orange as my network provider. I live South East of London but work across the UK. I've manually set it to GPRS only as I was frustrated with calls dropping out and generally poor connectivity as it struggled to keep latched on to the faster network.

    Only exception, I took it to Japan last year and had uninterrupted 3G connectivity for nine days as I travelled around Honshu.

    The 2000 spectrum auction was designed to enable operators to create scarcity. Macrocells, even when upgarded to LTE will at best support 3 times what you are currently experiencing and you will be waiting 5 years.

    The Digital Dividend spectrum modernisation consultation has been extended until February 5th. I have made a submission requesting specific spectrum is set aside for Home cells. You can download the submission from here - [Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator]

    As part of the Digital Dividend we need some spectrum set aside for the citizen so we can us our own broadband connections to carry our mobile data. This is entirely achievable and BIS (Digital Britain team) are open to spectrum being shared to achieve this, but as users we need to shout for it.

    Macrocells are good at permiting roaming between cells, but they make a very inefficient use of the bit carrying potential of radio spectrum. As it stands the spectrum modernisation plan does not address this fundamental issue, hence the submission and what will be a formal request for spectrum for home cells to be aside for users not discrete operators. This is another bit of the Digital Britain jigsaw and will be a good reason to upgrade to fiber so we have more connectivity to share.

    We will a much better debate when we merge the fixed and mobile speed debate into a single debate on connectivity.

    Ok... I really need to think about this one because I am seriously frustrated by the O2 iphone network.

    London - South Woodford - I currently live in London (originally from Glasgow) My o2 service is pretty bad but the 3G is not too bad here.

    Glasgow - South Side & Central - When home visiting my family recently I had serious problems in the South Side of Glasgow and in Central Glasgow getting signal and being able to use my 3G. I am disgusted that I was unable to use my phone at all for days at a time.

    I can not believe that o2 sell these phones and these expensive packages (more expensive than Vodafone - Which I moved from to the get iphone before it came out on Voda and Orange) to customers who are expecting to get a service.

    This is unacceptable and o2 should be refunding some of these expensive contract monthly fees or sort their life's out!!!!!

    Well I have a Sony Ericcson C905, unbranded by any mobile phone supplier, in other words, it was as SE designed it, and my 3G signal is always better than a friend of mine Iphone, no matter where we are. He has often lossed his 3G signal, when I still have one and we are both on O2. Strange isn't it. As comparison, I have another friend who has a SE C905, but has Vodafones firmware on it, and the same can be said for that, I will still have a good 3G signal, where my friend with a Vodafone firmware C905 is lucky to get a signal. This has been in several locations around the UK, and it is always the same, both of them often ask me to look things up on my phone web wise, as I have a signal and works at normally a good speed. It does look like it is a issue with what has been done with the phone since it was built by the company, has anyone checked someone with a Iphone who got their's from outside the UK????

    I live in South Liverpool and 2.5 years ago I left O2 for the first time and went onto Orange because I got a free Wii.... I was on them for 18m and found them OK apart from the 3G internet was horribly slow and patchy... plus I often had to stand in the bay window of my living room just to make a phone call despite there being an Orange transmitter at the top of my church's tower, which which at the top of a hill (Mossley Hill) just round the corner.

    As soon as the 18m ended I jumped back to O2 on a web SIM only deal with the unlimited data bundle for free and it's massively better, always nice and fast and great signal, even enough to just Joikuspot on it and turn it into a mobile hotspot.

    Recently I've had some troubles with pages not loading and Error messages, although that could quite easily be my phone which does need replacing as it's starting to die a bit....

    My 3G service with Orange using an iphone 3GS has always been really good around Coventry where I live and other parts of the midlands. A speed test just showed 1,907 kbps download speed & 237 upload. Can't complaint about this network service at all - I've always found Orange to be really good for coverage too.

    O2 seem to be the only network I know of that has an intermittent 3G signal when you're next to a mast and in an office where all other networks have full 3G coverage...

    (Centre of Edinburgh, in a modern building, by the way...can't even get EDGE, only bad ol' 2G coverage. Unlike my Orange iPhone compatriots...)

    I live in a rural location (Consett, County Durham) and am with Vodafone. My 3G signal at home is brilliant, full bar all the time. This is mostly due to the fact I live on top of a hill, but I am about a mile away from my nearest mast according to the OFCOM website.

    I work on the outskirts of Newcastle and my 3G signal here is also pretty decent, though the sheer quantity of metal in our office building does degrade the signal. However, that's not Vodafone's fault, just plain physics I'm afraid and a lot of people would do well to be made aware of what is within the realms of the Operators' capability to fix and what is "environmental".

    I use my phone (HTC Magic) for Facebook, Twitter, and email when on the move and whenever I want to use it I can get either a good 3G connection or a perfectly serviceable 2G one. I guess I am lucky...or maybe I have set my expectations at the right level.

    - Oxford city centre, very poor, if 3G is indicated it drops to GPRS when it is used.
    - Too many calls are being diverted directly to voice mail even with full signal.
    - Milton Keynes MK1 centre, 3G indicated with full signal, no data coming through.
    - Too many BTOpenzone hotspots turn out to be BTfon. Worse than useless since the iPhone will linger on a wifi connection which you can't use instead of switching to 3G automatically.

    I spend half my time in Woolich and the other half in stroud, gloucestershire. 3g is non-existent in Woolich, and even making calls is dodgy. London, which is where I would make most use of my iphone, is not that great for 3g either. 3g in stroud is intermittent at best, but I use home wifi. That said, if im at home i dont really need the iphone! Im on Orange, who advertise the best 3g coverage! In all honesty i have never found the coverage of any use, which kind of negates the point of having an iphone in the first place

    I had an iphone 3g on o2 and found the 3g service abysmal. Their 2g service provided decent coverage apart from at my house but the call quality was atrocious. I moved from orange to o2 to get the iphone however I regretted it so much I paid off my contract after 12 mths and transferred back to orange.

    I now have a 3gs on orange which I find to be much improved. What must be said is that the 3g (2g is ok)radio sensitivity of the iphone is very poor. Apple recalibrated it to show five bars even with a poor signal. If your phone shows less than five bars (on 3g) its a waste of time. Another problem people have is missed calls. If your phone is on 3g on o2, capacity problems cause the calls to go to voicemail. You also get the same calls to voicemail on 2g which is caused by data being used at the time of the incoming call. This could be push email or such like. Why the networks prioritise data over voice I don't know but they do. It should be the other way round.

    In short the iphone has hardware shortcomings which exasperate the poor performance of the networks O2 being the worst.

    O2 should be fined for their poor poor network. Their capacity issues are a joke!

    These posts clearly indicate that the problem is not restricted to the iPhone and 02. It is about smart phones and the service providers that have made no provision for the exponential increase in demand that they bring. We need to hear not just fron Ronan Dunne of 02, but from all service providers. If they do not act decisively to increase capacity, then the 3G service will quickly degenerate to the levels of service we experienced in the early days of mobile phones.

    Maybe some of these users should look at the hardware they are using. I recently upgraded a Nokia phone to a Blackberry Storm on the Vodaphone network and the signal performance and drop out rate (calls cutting off) is considerably worse. Despite reconfiguring the phone and a new SIM cards there was no improvement. I frequently changed the SIM card back into the Nokia to validate it was the device not signal; no problem with the Nokia (full signal v Blackberry 50-60%). After much back & forth with Vodaphone they sent me a Blackberry Storm 2. It has exactly the same issue with a very variable signal. The Blackberry is great to look at and has some nice features but if it looses signal frequently cutting off calls it is not a practical mobile phone. Back to the 3 year old Nokia.

    I live in Balham, South London, approx 50meters from the local telephone exchange (yes I can see the mobile phone aerials from my window) and almost without fail, every Friday evening from about 5pm until about 9pm, I cannot make or recieve any calls, send or receive any texts or get even the slightest hint of a data packet. Sometimes I find manually switching my smartphone to use GSM (ie 2G) instead of UMTS (3G) solves the problem but it is still a massive fail on the part of O2. I have complained....their response: nothing. Will I be moving to a new provider as soon as financially viable? YES, DEFINITELY!

    I live in London W3 and my O2 3G signal is fine, can't complain.

    HOWEVER - I often visit the Westfield Shopping centre in London W12 and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a 3G signal. My iPhone clearly says it has 3G coverage but it fails to work every single time. I've experienced this in many busy places in London but nowhere as bad as Westfield Shopping Centre.

    I used to live in near Newcastle, where if I had 3G coverage, it worked fine. However I have also noticed a drop in quality there in the past few months.

    Unfortunately, O2 coverage has slipped drastically over the last 6-8 months. I live in Central London and otherwise faultless coverage has now become poor, patchy and unreliable. When they charge the amounts they do for their smartphone tariffs, you would have expected them to use the money to re-invest in their network which in turn would help retain customers.

    Unfortunately, customers are not thought of once the handset has been bought and the contract signed. The only reason they are now talking about investing in the network is because their exclusivity of the Iphone is no longer true, and other networks like T-mobile and Orange have far superior 3G coverage than O2 and Vodafone (which may mean people will jump ship)

    I'm talking about coverage in london which needs to improve. Coverage in other parts of the country seems a different story, it's excellant.

    I live in West Horsley, Surrey - no 3G, OK 2G data and Good voice. What I really want is a femtocell (like Vodafone's access gateway) at home connected to my (excellent) broadband for backhaul - surely O2 should have deployed these while they had exclusivity with the iPhone - as that would have solved most of the problems for home and small office? My contract is up next week and I'm off to Vodafone. If they had given me a femtocell, I'd be staying put as a happy customer.

    I live in Hethersett, a village 5 mins south of Norwich. I have no 3G signal with Vodafone at the house. However, I only need to drive to any number of local supermarket carparks (all out of town) and I get a max strength 3G+ signal. The coverage in the city is fine, but drops off dramatically once you move away from the centre. I have a Samsung Tocco.

    I've been on O2's network with an iphone 3G for the last 18 months and have found that the 3G coverage is patchy at best. Often I'll have a 3G signal, only for it to drop back to edge when I actually attempt to use the internet.

    Have also had problems dialling out and sending/receiving texts in the Balham/clapham areas - sometimes it can take up to 2-3 hours and even days for texts to arrive. When I called O2 to report this, I was advised that this kind of service is expected during 'peak periods', even though this often happens in the middle of the week, a response that left me less than impressed.

    I used to live in Fleet in Hampshire, just next to the m3 and the coverage wasn't great. although if i went upstairs and lent out of the window it did improve!

    I've had an iPhone 3G for just over 18 months. Recenlty when my contract was up I moved from O2 to Vodafone and have noticed a huge improvement. Previously at work in the centre of Edinburgh I got no signal at all, not even voice calls. Travelling by train every day I had a signal about 50% of the time and of that about 20% was 3G. Now with vodafone I get a signal at work all day, admittedly 2G until I go outside. On my commute I also get a signal all the time with about 60-70% of that 3G. Also I would say that comparing the speeds when I do have a 3G connection it seems much faster. My first mobile phone was with vodafone 13 years ago and have twice been tempted away by handsets. I have always wanted to go back to vodafone for their coverage.

    What's a 3G phone signal..!!??? I live in Cumbria and have yet to experience the 3G icon on my phone in this area, although it does work when I've visited Lancaster and Manchester.
