Should Sean Quinn be given a second chance?

Paula McCann | 14:49 UK time, Tuesday, 19 April 2011

Should Sean Quinn be allowed to repay what he owes?

He left school at 14 and borrowed £100 to start a business selling gravel from the family farm in County Fermanagh. He went on to become Ireland's richest man, creating jobs for thousands of people in both the Republic and this side of the border....but he now owes the Anglo Irish Bank almost three billion euro, a bill the Irish taxpayer is having to pick up... last night, Sean Quinn blamed bad advice and an over-reliance on the banks for his downfall.

Sour, very expensive grapes or a fair assessment of where it all went wrong in this modern-day rags to unimaginable riches story...

On Talkback today, we spoke to Charlie Weston, personal finance editor at the Irish Independent who says that Sean Quinn gambled alot of money and lost.. as simple as that. He says every taxpayer in the Republic will now have to pay a 1,000 Euro as a result.

But Bertie Kerr, a friend of Sean Quinn and UUP councillor says the banks are to blame for Mr Quinn's downfall.

Some of our texters had little sympathy for him. Bobby said

"Greed got the better of him. Don't blame bad advice" while John Bell said "greed defeated all in business".... but we took loads of calls supporting him. Many keen to point out that he'd created work for people. Samuel in Dromara said that Sean Quinn should be made prime minister... He told Wendy that for a man who started with nothing he deserves a good chance.. He blames the worldwide recession.

Do you think Sean Quinn should be given another chance?

ps,..any chance of getting an expert on Talkback that knows a bit about the planets,..i know its a bit of an unusual subject for your type of morning coffee, wine and cheese show,..but...by my reckoning the brown dwarf (thats bigger than Jupiter) star better known to us as Elenin,Planet X,Nibiru reaches its perihelion in Sept 2011,..and planet earth runs straight into its trail around the end of Oct 2011......and im just wanting to know whats the least we should expect,..and will Talkback be off air for long while we're bombarded with the debris from it?

"Actually SL, this is Paula McCann here, and I only fill in here for Wendy when she can't be bothered to post a new topic. It's been a fortnight between topics this time, and many listeners, like yourself, have become understandably impatient. Apologies for that. Perhaps the Beeb could commission a feasibility study into the launching of some kind of .. oh, I don't know .. online forum sort of thingy. Some techno-savvy countries have them already .. Messageboards I believe they are called."

Well, in the language of the modern age : " .. it has emerged that .. the BBC has learned that .. a source close to insanity has revealed that .. etc. etc. rhubarb, rhubarb .. "

Paula interesting comments. As Ive stated before Im sure there are many decent volunteers to monitorand admin a revived TB/BBC NI messageboard at no cost. I and a few others from the TB Messageboard site on facebook site would be happy to hook up and discuss options. I dare say along the Taylor Cresswell lines in the Archers site.
AS I understand the TB nessageboard is in limbo under the NI Host name all it takes is a password and appointed "Taylor Cresswells" to get it up and going. A BBC NI Messageboard for BBC NI Licence payers.

I think Sean Quinn and the PMS should be brought in to manage Corporate Province.Like any Farce,we all lose our knickers, and the Vicar gets his roof fund back.OOOops!.Can we say Knickers on BBC?Perhaps not,but we can propagate a Regime change policy without using the words "Regime Change".BTW Taylor Cresswell is a name that would not look out of place as the Grand Master Flash of some strange institution in Corporate Province.

Cresswell Taylor just sounds like a North Antrim farmer type.

As there's no message board to post a comment on sports coverage, could I use this blog to ask why, when reporting on golf, the placings are given for local N.I players, but rarely are told who the leader of a tournament actually is. Perhaps a return of the Talkback Messageboard would help those, like me, why enjoy being able to comment on Radio Ulster and as the demand is certainly there, please let us have our Messageboard back.

  • Comment number 10.

My last paragraph re a return of the messagboard should read .....'who' enjoy being able to comment on Radio Ulster .......

My dear jenmer.I am sure Sean Quinn knows what a golfing bat is,so we are spot on topic. As for the BBC knowing what a hurling bat or a brickbat is.....I am not so sure. They treat us all like pre 69.....I will pre mod myself...Give some lad in a big tie a break.

  • Comment number 12.

Give us our second series.......I mean our board back....you.....Meanies.

Yeah it's gotta be time for some jolly hockey sticks...

  • Comment number 14.

Hi Lady C. As to jolly hockey sticks, you might think that, I couldn't possibly comment, lol. It'svery quiet over on Bob's FB board. I suppose easter accounts for that. Trust your's was good.mine was, at least.

  • Comment number 15.

Mine was good thanks Ard. Isle of Man for Easter; lovely place you can leave your door open and keys in the car! But it's not for me.

As for Sean Quinn, greed got the better of the Quinn family.

    Who can blame them?

    6000 people relied on them.
