Is Smoking still sexy?

Paula McCann | 15:21 UK time, Thursday, 10 March 2011

Kate Moss is all over today's papers. She's on a catwalk in Paris with a lit fag in her hand. So much for No Smoking Day! The model also defied the strict smoking ban that's in place in France. Judith West from the Ulster Cancer Foundation told us that she thought the media still portrays smoking as a cool thing to do. Something she finds frustrating. Fashionista Cathy Martin said that in the industry loads of models smoke because it curbs their appetites!

Broadly speaking, our callers were with Kate on this issue. Bobby in Rathcoole told Maxine Mawhinney that he was glad she'd stood up to what he called the thought police, while Jean in Craigavon said that even though she doesn't smoke its everyone's right to do so if they want to.

Is it the image we want to see all over our morning papers? And is smoking really still sexy?

I'm a Dr and I'd like to take all those famous people in the public eye, who smoke and create an image that impressionable young people then follow, into a lung cancer ward. Lets let them see just how sexy skeletal, vomiting people look when they know that they only have a few months to live and will spend those final months in pain , sick and fading in front of their family's eyes. People in the public eye have a responsibility that goes with their fame . That responsibility includes setting a good example for others --sorry , but it does . If they are prepared to take the big salaries and fame , they should take the responsibility that goes with it --and that means setting a good example to the young , in every way.

It's a laudable objective, Salthill, but I'm not convinced the young ones would see that as a deterrent to smoking since the way they look at it is, they don't expect to be in good health at that age anyway and don't expect either, that cancer would definitely hit them. I have never smoked myself but at that age it wouldn't have stopped me by considering what would happen decades away.

Bottom line is that a lot of young people, male and female, are lured into smoking due to its so-called glamorous (almost romantic) and rebellious connotations. Sad but true. I remember at school the smokers being part of an almost gang-like family... who looked out for each other whilst escaping the "law". Only took me 12 years to quit!

As for Kate - marketing masterstroke. In France a packet of 20 cigarettes is around 4 euros. Thats 20cents per 'fag'. 20 cents for several hundred thousand pounds worth of publicity? Bargain.

By the way... Cathy Martin? Fashionista?! Do me a favour!
