Verity Murphy | 12:32 UK time, Friday, 27 May 2011

Sharon Shoesmith, the former director of children's services for Haringey, North London, has won her Court of Appeal battle over her sacking following the Baby Peter tragedy.

Judges said that the-then education secretary Ed Balls and her employers, Haringey Council, had been "procedurally unfair" when they sacked her three years ago.

Baby Peter Connelly, who had been seen 60 times by social services, was found dead in 2007 with over 50 injuries.

Tonight we will talk to Ed Balls, and will discuss whether in the rush to find a scapegoat for the Baby Peter tragedy opportunities to reform social services were lost.

Also amid the news that Fifa President Sepp Blatter has been placed under investigation by the organisation's ethics committee over accusations he failed to report the payment of alleged bribes we ask if this is the moment football cleans up.

As Mr. Balls is usually so keen to comment on air he seems to work from a hammock in the BBC Green Rooms, might we expect to see him interviewed about this, and with luck more robustly than a Marrshmallow roasting as reserved for fellow strayers from the path of true competence?

From the latest NHS report where our screens are filled with cuts, Cuts, CUTS!!! banner waving Pilgrim mothers who reckon a few more billion should just about help train medical numbskulls how to leave glasses of water for elderly patients dying of dehydration, this latest get out of any responsibility-free card carrying harpie shows that there is no longer any accountability in this country.

Adapting a genius posting about the NHS story, if Ms. Shoesmith had been sporting a crucifix, she'd have been out on her ear before you could say 'the lunatics have politically correctly re-designated the asylum'.

An infant with multiple injuries, callously inflicted, is intolerable horror, and rightly the subject of investigation and soul searching.

But our heroic armed forces mortally maimed many a child, on the whim of one, persuasive yet deluded, man. Some oblique enquiry has been undertaken, but will any FUNDAMENTAL conclusion be drawn?

Obama was greeted with A LOT OF GUNS. Royal occasions (archetypal resonance) are OVERTLY MILITARISED. Unless the Soul of Great Britain is searched for the seat of this madness (that only made sense when man fought man, with minimal 'kit') amoral science will deliver to immoral war leaders, ever more horrifying weapons, and Baby P's death will be repeated an thousand fold – in obscene batches.

This is all way beyond the 'wit' of Ed Balls and his Westminster ilk. Will NewsyNighty ever address root issues?

    We must be mad . . .

    The situation in Spain:

Serious question to the UK Govt :

Will you be supporting the protesters or those beating them ? If it is those beating them why are you supporting the Protesters in Libya, Egypt etc ?

Also to the BBC why are you not reporting this significantly ?

  • Comment number 4.

"(Reuters) - A New York judge rejected Morgan Stanley's (MS.N) bid to throw out a lawsuit accusing the bank of fraudulently inducing bond insurer MBIA Inc (MBI.N) to insure $223.2 million of risky mortgage debt."

"MBIA filed the lawsuit in December accusing Morgan Stanley and its Saxon Mortgage Services Inc unit of making false representations about the quality of the underwriting on a pool of 4,979 second-lien residential mortgages.

MBIA said it found breaches in 97 percent of the loan files it examined, and expected to be responsible for much more than the $71 million of claims for which it had already paid out."

Did Serbia and Montenegro try to keep Yugoslavia together?

Did NATO/EU have any interest in the Balkanization of Yugoslavia or the USSR?

Does the EU/USA have any interest in the Balkanization of the UK?

What is this former psychiatrist asserting with his dirty tricks stories?

Surely we are the good guys who are only eager to spread freedom and democracy?

Ed refers to his 'elected status' as if it conferred legitimacy on his actions in the Haringey fracas.

I bring news Mr B: THEY VOTED FOR YOUR ROSETTE, NOT FOR YOU, AND IT ONLY MANAGED A MARGIN OF 1000 odd. Without the rosette, (and with it, only for those few weeks at election time) YOU HAVE NO LEGITIMACY AT ALL. Put the rosette on another ninny, and the dumb voters will walk over you to vote!

Ed Balls, and all party MPs must be brought to an understanding that they are ROSETTE STANDS; whipped nobodies. It follows that Prime Ministers are the same MAGNIFIED.

  • Comment number 9.

sorry, but I am with Ed Balls on this issue, this lady was on an ego trip of immense proportions and she was rightly condemned, so she wins an appeal but Harringay will win their appeal. Balls acted in the interests of the children and went on professional advice so how can these 'judges' get it so wrong?

  • Comment number 10.

I hold no brief for any of the parties, and doubt the truth can be known.

To my way of thinking: Law is 'left brain' extreme male, Justice 'right brain' female. Law is satisfying to dry minds and justice – TRUE JUSTICE - reassuring to warm hearts.

But with the Westminster Ethos reigning supreme, we can expect nothing truly laudable in our society.

  • Comment number 11.

So glad to hear they've finally got Ratko Mladic in custody. Lets hope justice is swift. Hopefully they'll also catch Tony Blair and Bill Clinton for their war crimes as well.

  • Comment number 12.

The problem with Haringey childrens social services its in Haringey. Affirmative action regarding employment has debased the quality of staff, not just within the social services but across the board of the council. Haringey, like Hackney is a hole. Sacking the director was only Ed Balls playing to the outraged baying was the culture that needed sacking.

I blame the progressive socialists and the Libs.. and their media mouthpiece.. the Guardian reading BBC for all this. They excused the feckless, they allowed criminal behaviour to run rampent, with benefits for all who stay lazy and useless -and often it appears encouraged, and lets not forget, longterm welfare recipients always vote labour eh. Their only contribution is keeping the justice system and the police busy...and the rest of us picking up the bill or falling foul of them due to close proximity of these hillbillies and murderers. No more handwringing, get firm, employ the best, expect the best and finally...a sterilzation programme for those deemed unfit to be mothers/fathers. I'm a hardliner.

    War criminals:
Can we not arrest Campbell for war crimes as well? We don't want to be accused of double standards. I would say campbell could be taken to task for the crimes of Blair and Clinton..I mean, he played his part as the Blairs propagandist.
Just a thought...maybe one day eh.

Hey Kev! I dance all round the point, and you just tell it straight. Do you have friends in low places?

Blair no longer has, simply, fear in his eyes - he is a TOTAL PICTURE OF TERROR. Perhaps Chilcot asked for 'furthers and betters' of unavoidable significance?

Much good may that do - or 9/11 revelation - the mad guys have blown up the asylum; rebuilt and renamed it, to last a thousand years . . .

Left brain or Right brain? Punish the Individual or Society?

We should refer all such cases to The Hague as they don't seem to be so obsessed with the rights of the individual versus the rights of society

  • Comment number 17.

Hi IDG2. I think we should consider what Milgram and Zimbardo showed us: there are potential torturers in every British street.

Our politicians see school (right through the tender years) as a given good. In 1974, R D Laing wrote: "A child born today in the United Kingdom stands a ten times greater chance of being admitted to a mental hospital than to a university ... This can be taken as an indication that we are driving our children mad more effectively than we are genuinely educating them. Perhaps it is our way of educating them that is driving them mad."

I suspect it goes wider. I believe PERVERSE GOVERNANCE, through the medium of CULTURE, is driving us mad. This is the source of potential torturers AND FUTURE WESTMINSTER POLITICIANS.

As collective madness rises in these islands, our politicians turn to importing more.
That is why I say this is the Age of Perversity. To combat it we must

Blair and Bush in the dock? Wouldn't ya just love it....but we know it'll never happen, they should be in there along with the Bosnian Croat leader who massacred Serbs in their thousands and the West gave him a 'clean bill of health' thanks to Holbrooke, Clinton and Blair who had their own agendas, remember to condemn equally...or not at all...

This thing does not apply to the UK so far or at least it shouldn't. However, when I was racing pigeons I noted that the pigeons would not eat American Maize, even though they loved maize, always wolfed the French down first. Perhaps they instinctively knew it was GMO and it was bad for them, yet I suspect that they would eat it no problem if they were virtually starving with no alternative !

"...a sterilzation programme for those deemed unfit to be mothers/fathers." Deemed by whom? Presumably those who deem themselves unfit, by sending their children to be "traumatised" at boarding school should be included?

"lets not forget, longterm welfare recipients always vote labour eh"..........Do they - where's your evidence? I could give a number of counterexamples. In fact, extrapolating from my experience in active politics, the lumpenproletariat tend not to vote at all.

"Hopefully they'll also catch Tony Blair and Bill Clinton for their war crimes as well." ........But not George Bush, Cheney or Rumsfeld? After all, Bliar voz only obeying (transatlantic) orders - or are you rewriting history? Or is it that to you it's only the crimes of the pretend left which count?

Sort out these benefit claimant by all means - perhaps "work will make them free"?

    FACING REALITY (#24 link)

Well well well - the Cameron face is signalling the true Cameron character. Whatever happened to that pretty boy on the election posters? Perhaps he just 'couldn't go on like that'.

Poor Dave - it's like comfort eating - he got a look at Obama's 'private jet' and went into a depression. Now he’s doing 'COMFORT AIDING'.

Then there is Tony's face. That shot of Brown and Blair at the do: you would think it was a Wasp Chewers convention!

Don't be vague - call for The Hague.

I just watched (Christian) Major Tim Collins on 'The Big Questions' declare (with reference to abortion for disability) the error of "TAKING ANOTHER LIFE BECAUSE IT'S AN INCONVENIENCE".

Tell that to (dead) COLLATERAL JOHNNIE FOREIGNER Major Tim.

  • Comment number 28.

We expect the roads to be rather crowded on Bank Holidays, but make the best of it now, despite the poor weather, as things will only get worse:

Foreign student visas, as always, are one of the open doors, despite the work of UK Border Agency. Their website has some interesting analyses at:

One could ask why some 85% of students from India, Pakistan, Korea and Sri Lanka chose to ‘study’ at private institutions, whereas 90% of students from China attend public institutions. My own research showed many of these private colleges owned by keen Asian businessmen - although up to 25% of their students were found to be non-attending in the UKBA sample!

UKBA does some useful crime-busting, as in:

“Officers uncovered 50 counterfeit passports in various stages of construction purporting to be Ghanaian, Nigerian, Irish, Czech and even British issue; 20 counterfeit German, Dutch and French Identity cards, around 40 fake Home Office and other National Government rubber visa stamps, forged visas and around 30 blank birth and marriage certificates. Officers even found a book containing a list of orders from clients and passport sized photos ready to be used in the forgeries”.

But the punishment for this level of fraud, deception and possessing false identity documents was a sentence of three years in prison, with the wife given a one year suspended sentence plus community service. Probably be back in business within 18 months, and maybe get a small business grant?

UKBA’s website asks anyone who has information about immigration crime to contact Crimestoppers, which would only result in more legal aid payments by the taxpayer to the many foreign solicitors armed with their copies of HRA and Equalities legislation.

While being assailed, yet again, by BBC musack, SWAMPING the spoken word, I considered just how many ageing ears, backed by ageing brains, are GIVING UP on the BBC?

Prompted by post #28 above (reinforced by the strange state-manoeuvrings in America) I am suddenly wondering if there is INTENT here. Rubbish schooling, and carp 'qualifications', plus nihilistic, alcohol-fuelled, game-show addled 'leisure' pursuits, have seen off AWARENESS in the younger generations. Is the BBC now intent on SEEING OFF those of us who can still discriminate, i.e. WHO STILL HAVE AWARENESS, AND THE ABILITY TO SPOT CHICANERY.

Oh look! Another conspiracy theorist. Let the ridicule begin, and be sure to back it with edgy graphics and a maddening signal-to-noise ratio.

    #29 barrie
I’m half inclined to your conspiracy theory, Barrie, as the level of state incompetence and corruption could surely not result from chance alone.
But my alternative conspiracy theories are:
(1)We are being kept in the dark about an imminent Armageddon whilst those in on this fact (Cameron and the Lord Chief Justice) are into last-chance altruism (or nearly all truism) giving away all our UK treasures and forgiving all that trespass against us – just in case there is a hereafter; or
(2)A new religion is required to fill the secular void, requiring forgiveness from Mother Nature (anthropology) by massive human sacrifice; or
(3)Several decades of dumbing down, by BBC (and the other 999 screeching TV channels) has resulted in advanced brain cell death throughout society.

I don’t disagree with your call to dismantle Westminster but while you are working on that project I’m campaigning for dismantling of the Law Courts, where the inmates are busy sacrificing our society on the Equality and Human Rights Altar.

I have been idling my time (as usual) reprising a lot of the Obama birth certificate data and discussion. It is sometimes presented as possible double-bluff, and has that feel. All the major events since 9/11 have the same 'bad movie' quality (all the aliens are wearing watches - but by accident?). We 'THE AWARE' are, perhaps, not aware enough? Indeed, how better to shut down THE AWARE than by hyping the 'Conspiracy Theorist' nut-balls spoiler?

    Interesting times.

I have said it before Liz - but then I thought it was to help the rush to nuclear . . .

Why would an island, surrounded by tides, while the moon is still in the sky (oh blimey - don't say that's a bluff too!) neglect tidal power in favour of wind?

But harking back to my #29 and #33 (if it appears) are we being invited to embrace, and to squabble over, wind for a while, and then run short of power as a debilitating and destabilising influence on Britain?

It begins to make sense why BBC is 'noisily silent' on matters of manipulation. Look HARD - then look behind 'the apparent'. Above all - be aware.

"No one would have believed in the early years of the 21st century that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns, *they* observed and studied, the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe, confident of our empire over this world. Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us."

I am about to confront the 8 Conservative MPs who availed themselves of its devious wording (not bothering with my MP - he has declared the matter closed). His time will come.

Simply put: the voting was manipulated in 17 (minimum) constituencies, by the Conservative Party, contravening the Representation of The People act.
