5 live Review: Captain America

From what I can gather, "Captain America" was made principally so that "The Avengers" could then be made. A film made for the sake of another film...hmmm, yes, that's just Hollywood all over, isn't it.

This was a very enjoyable old fashioned romp but was let down a bit by a flat ending that lacks the resonance that it is trying for. The music score is great though and it's a pleasure to hear a proper theme tune in a superhero film for the first time in years

in regards to the VFX of making Chris Evan skinny, it isnt actually a body double. its actually chris evans 100% of the time. lots of VFX compositors died for that effect.

What happens when Captain America meets the Fantastic Four?

I'd have to agree, it is what it is, and what it is is entirely fun and worth at least watching, despite a few minor complaints (Hugo Weaving looking far too much like a man in a rubber mask, Hayley Atwell's character being anachronistically involved in the big final attack in order to make her look tough as nails even though the only reason she's really there is to snog the Captain at the end - hardly a feminist revolution there).

I have to say though, Thor left me cold - there were bits of it I really enjoyed (the remythologising of Asgard as an alien utopia, the fantastic visuals, Chris Hemsworth and Stellan Skarsgård), other bits felt either incredibly badly done (riding on the back of her performance in "Black Swan", Natalie Portman was irritatingly phoned in...) or felt cheesily derivative of everything from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" to "Hercules in New York". In the end, I suppose I just wasn't as prepared to enjoy Thor as I was with Captain America. Then again, perhaps Thor lowered my expectations for the Avengers series enough for "Captain" to come as a pleasant surprise.

Still haven't had the chance to see Captain America yet. Will see it next week on the good Dr's recommendation.

I'l thrilled that Dr K also loves The Rocketeer. A very underrated movie. One of my ALL TIME favourites. Great characters, Timothy Dalton as an OTT villain, very nicely done. Will have to watch it again in preparation of seeing Captain America.

The main thing I remember from The Rocketeer was Jennifer Connelly. I'll have to go back and re-watch it.
