Improving english with Internet

Post categories:

Emilio Emilio | 08:00 UK time, Monday, 1 March 2010

Two months after I sended my request to become blogger for a month, I receive an e-mail from Learning English and some names I had seen in different english resources materials from BBC. What a great surprise!

My teacher will be Nuala. Hi Nuala and thanks for the opportunity! You will have to be patience with the mistakes that for sure I will make, but I hope to be a good student. Anyway the point is to be here with all of us and practise english in such a funny way.

Now let me give you a brief introduction about myself. I am Emilio Casbas and currently live in Pamplona -the Running of the bulls city- this city is worldwide famous for the San Fermin Festival mainly due to the widespread attention by Ernest Hemingway in his first novel, "The Sun also rises" but I will speak about this subject in another post, stay tuned!.

I have been working as a sysadmin for five years in the University of Navarra and at this momment I am working as a security guy in a spanish start-up for almost three years. We usually try to raise awareness of the online threats and helping the business to keep them secure on Internet.

I got married almost 3 years ago with Mayte my lovely wife. We knew each other when we were 17 years old. We like travel a lot and New York possibly was the city we have enjoyed more. In my free time I enjoy blogging and twittering about different topics but mainly: security, social media and open source. I usually practise different sports: gym, running, mountain-bike and sometimes snowboard. I like feel good and agile because my job is almost always sedentary. And finally, we love spend our time with our doggy called Urko!

I have plenty of ideas with different topics to speak this month. But I would like listen to you about some topic you would like I will speak about; maybe Pamplona my city -but not my hometown- and San Fermin Festival?, Social networks and his threats?, internet curiosities?, technology?, books?, travel?, music? movies...?

Do you have any question or something do you like to know from Spain or whatever thing? This is your opportunity. After that you can not say I don't warn you :-)

Regards and happy learning english

    Hi Emilio!

And welcome to the new-style blog. Your dog is so cute: he (I think it's a he?) looks very young? Is he just a puppy? What kind of dog is he?

    Take care

Hello Emilio, I would like you talk about open source, technology and so on besides I would like to know more about Navarra, how is it, how is the government, the weather, their soccer team, their shield, the name where does it come from and so on.

    Regards from Nicaragua,

Hello Emilio nice to meet you here . We looking forward to your next post. Urko is cute :))

  • Comment number 6.

    ¡Welcome, Emilio!

Like Nuala I didn't know what a sysadmin is. I suppose it is a system administrator, but even with that guess I don't have any clear idea of what this administrator would do. Could you explain a little more, please?

As for the dog, it looks charming. What size is it? If it is a puppy, do you know the size it is supposed to grow to? Urko sounds almost like a Finnish male forename: Urho. There was a Finnish president called Urho Kekkonen. Bye for now,

Wow! great to see people so interested in Spain and more related activities!

@carrie4: Yes the mutt is male. In the photograph it was 4 months old. Currently it is one year and seven months. It's the smallest dog in my neighborhood. He is a mix between podenco andaluz (https://www.azahounds.com/Podenco_Andaluz.htm%29 and ratonero (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratonero_Bodeguero_Andaluz%29.

@Gemma: You could take a look from past posts in this blog. For example Silvia spoke about Valencia his land it has great food and good weather. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/communicate/blog/student/archive/2007/12.shtml%29. But the weather in Spain is almost always sunny in all the mediterranean coast, specially from abril to october. I will pick your idea to do some post with tipical places and food.

@Milton Javier: I will answer your questions and more on the next posts. Thanks!

@Anna: Not famous place but nice and interesting... There are plenty of them! I will try give you some ideas.

@Ewa: Thanks for the compliment. While I am writing this response, Urko is sleeping next to me.

@kirsti: Well done with the sysadmin meaning!. The dog is small and he is not going to grow more. And yes, in Spain, Urko is as well an usual name for kids.

@clara: Thanks. I will write a full post about San Fermin.

@merce: Thanks, so much people from Spain!

@newbird: I think that Alhambra in Granada, give us a good idea of your question. Some people considered Alhambra as one of the 10 wonders of the world.

@JuanCalvente: Nice to meet you too.

Thanks to all interesting questions and welcome messages.

Hello Emilio, Welcome! Your dog is so cute and his eyes are very beautiful. Like Carrie, I am also interested to know what kind of dog is it? I have a kitten and now he is growing big, he wakes up very early in the morning and then never likes to stay home and loves to go out and play. I am interested to know everything about Spain such as food, music, traditions, languages and so much that you would like share with us all. Right now my questions is about the languages spoken in Spain. Happy blogging.

I write you from China,I have a very close friend she is spanish, she used to work in China, and know she lives in American. What is extaordinary about her is She adopted an abandoned babygirl in China several years ago,not because she is infertile but just out of love. She treats the baby girl as nicely as she dose to her own boy. This is quite a moving story, isn't it? Her story makes me feel, as if Spanish is very kind.

    Ola Emilio
We were there in Saint Fermin day in Pamplona some years ago.I remember very well our impression from the fact that almost every one was dressing white dress with red ribbon : children and adults.Almost every one held a bottle of home made Sangaria. We were in a park outside the city and we watched the opening of the Fiesta on a big screen. The atmosphere was very happy. My impression is that it is an authentic event and not a touristic one.In this park just us were tourists among thousands of the city citizens.
A qustion to Naula : Is not it understatment to explain cruel as not kind? Look at this definition :willfully or knowingly causing pain or distress to others. 2.enjoying the pain or distress of others: the cruel spectators of the gladiatorial contests.
Thanks for the blog and for the teacher. It's great!

Hello Emilio. It's a pleasure to read about you and your country.
What means "sysadim"? I didn't understand.
I'd like to know more about what happens in S.Fermin Festival, with the bullls, running in the streets between people. With all due respect,I think this is a cruelty with the bulls as well as a bullfight. But I understand this like a people's culture and tradition.

I only know your country Spain, which is famous for football with two well-known clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the bull fighting. Hi Emilio,

I always feel that we, English learners, share the same aspirations and wishes of making our way through and, to some extent, command this beautiful language in a way that enables us to express our thoughts and feelings precisely they are when we first had them as a signal our brains sent to our 'communication systems'.
I really enjoy being here, I liked your blog and indeed admire the interactive comments and replies all of you.
I'd like to just share with you that I've got married to the same young woman I met 15 years ago when I first have seen her - you revived many memories when you mentioned your marriage story. I sincerely wish you both all the best and many thanks for your entry.
