MPFREE EP: 30TH NOVEMBER 2012

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 30 November 2012

It's been a week of newbies on the MPFree front this week, and caping things off is a nice slice of 80s style pop. The artist in question is New York based Majestyy which is the solo project of Apes & Androids frontman Brian Jacobs.

At present there are no details on a single or album release, so just make the most of the two free downloads which are available. We've gone for the more up-tempo of the two, and you'll find it linked below:

Your tracks this week are:

Mac DeMarco - Freaking Out The Neighborhood

Chromatics - Cherry

Nicolas Jaar & Theatre Roosevelt - The Ego

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold

Majestyy - The Notion

Some tracks may no longer be available for download.

MPFREE: 29TH NOVEMBER 2012

Your MPFree is a one minute shot in the arm from Parquet Courts. The New York-via-Texas four piece have kept it simple and made an album which is full of straight-forward, no messing garage rock.

The album Light Up Gold was released earlier this year, and now they're giving the title track away for free.

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold

You won't believe it but we've only gone and got you ANOTHER MPFREE. Today's offering is from dubbed-out electronic wunderkind Nicolas Jaar & Theatre Roosevelt.

Credited to Nicolas and the presumably non-existent Theatre Roosevelt (is that Theodore Roosevelt?), the song was posted with this message: "Teddy's ghost wishes you a happy thanksgiving!" Read into that what you will, and whilst you're doing that have a listen:

Your MPFree today comes from Portland outfit Chromatics. This track comes from the forthcoming After Dark II triple LP compilation released by the label Italians Do It Better.

This is a new track for Chromatics, and is the first new material since their album Kill For Love which was released in May. And if you recognise the sound, but not the name, it might be because they provided music for the soundtrack to Drive.

They are a four-piece from Philadelphia and this track comes from the Downward Years To Come EP which is coming soon.

Last year they released the Sons & Lovers EP through Big Love Records if you'd like to delve into their back catalogue.

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 16 November 2012

This week our guest is Nathan Barry from Shepperton, and I think this is a Memory Tape first.... Nathan writes:

"Hey Lauren, here's my Memory Tape. It was a proper old skool cassette I made called 'A Tribute To Harriet'.

"Harriet was my 1970 Beetle - named after Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays. I rebuilt her when I was 17 and drove her all through my college days, including 4 or 5 trips to Glastonbury. I had to sell her because she couldn't handle the mileage I was driving to and from work when I was about 25.

"I made the mix tape for a special day out driving around Richmond Park on the last weekend before I passed her on to her new owner. I cried when he drove her away, and then again when I found out later that he crashed her into a tree after about month!

Amazing. Here are the tracks:

Corduroy - Mini

The Cardigans - Carnival

The Wannadies - You & Me Song

Jhelisa - Friendly Pressure

S'Express - Hey Music Lover

Galliano - Ease Your Mind

Supergrass - Alright

Ashley & Jackson - Solid Gold

Bridgette McWilliams - No Groove Sweatin'

Snowboy & The Latin Section - Wild Spirit

Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up (Short Version)

The Herbaliser - Bust A Nut

Neneh Cherry - Woman (Alex Reece Vocal Mix)

Deee-Lite - DMT (Dance Music Trance)

A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray

Jedi Knights - One For M.A.W.

Orbital - Chime Live

Underworld - Born Slippy.NUXX (Deep Pan)

I think you should email Lauren the tracks and story behind your Memory Tape.

Today's MPFREE comes to you from Jim Jones. Think the name sounds familiar? Well, he's the vocalist / guitarist from massive psychedelic rock band My Morning Jacket.

Early next year, he'll release 'Regions Of Light And Sound Of God' - his first solo album effort. He's played every instrument on the album as well as engineering it. It's also going to be a concept album (don't be scared) based around God's Man; a 1929 graphic novel by Lynd Ward. Just click the link below and enjoy:

Gadget of the Week - Revolights Bike safety is a prominent topic in the news at the moment so Revolights have come up with a novel way of lighting up the road and being seen. They come as two 12 LED rings that clip to your bicycle wheels. When the wheels spin, the LEDs form a bright arc of white light at the front and red light at the rear.

App of the Week - Filed Trip, Android This is a location-based recommendations app, designed to combine information on your surroundings with reviews left by people who've been there before. When you get close to something interesting - a restaurant, place of interest, local history, food/drink/shopping suggestions, music gig - a card pops up with details about the location.

Website of the Week - Lovelyjojos.com This website sells contemporary and quirky items from up and coming designers in the UK. You'll find an original selection of graphic prints and posters, cards, t shirts, baby clothes, bags, and general cool and quirky stuff from a girl who "wears an alarming amount of neon, speaks a bit funny and calls dinner tea."

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:21 UK time, Friday, 2 November 2012

This week's Memory Tape comes from Jodey McVie in Hull, who writes...

"This compilation was sent to me by an ex-boyfriend before he was my boyfriend. He was an impressionable 18 year old local musician and I a 20 year old University student looking to find my place in Hull.

"We both did them at the time and I'm sure it was a case of trying to impress by being as eclectic as possible to show our wide scoping musical taste. I can't say everything on there totally hit the spot but I still occasionally play it now and it reminds me of those excellent times. It obviously did its job as we went out for seven years, I didn't move back home after University and I'm still here now.

"I'm still in contact with Jonee, my ex (guitarist in the awesome Fonda 500), although our lives have taken us down different paths. This compilation reminds me of why I'm the person I am today and this surely can't be a bad thing. It does break my one fundamental compilation rule though - more than one track by the same artist. I'll let him off..."

1) The Flaming Lips - Race for the Prize
