Happy Halloween! We have a spooky free download for you today, and it comes from JD McPherson.

It comes from his album Signs and Signifiers which was released earlier this year - it has a spooky title, so he's giving it away for free. Makes sense. JD will return to the UK next year for a tour starting on 17th January at The Electric Ballroom in London.

Your MPFree today comes from current show fave El Perro Del Mar.

Her forthcoming LP Pale Fire is released 12th November and this is a taster from it. El Perro Del Mar is the solo project of Gothenburg's Sarah Assbring.

You last heard her on the show a couple of weeks ago remixed by Saint Etienne.

Gadget of the Week - Kindle Paperwhite

Prefer real books to e-readers? Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite is a good reason to think again. Unlike earlier Kindles's with grey screens, the Paperwhite has a white, front-lit, e-ink screen with greatly increased contrast, so it comes much closer to the ideal of black ink on white paper and makes for a much easier reading experience. Can also read in bed without needing lamp.

App of the Week - Fontly, Free, Android and iOS

Bit of a niche app for fans of Vintage typography. Essentially discover, collect, track and share vintage typography from across the world by location.

Website of the Week - Reelizer.com

Reelizer is a website dedicated to the fine art of film posters - essentially old and current film posters rehashed by several different artists. Great if you're bored of generic looking movie posters or just appreciate a good doodle.

It's been a lovely old week of MPFrees, and the week concludes with something new from a member of Girls. Girls, sadly, split up recently, so with front-man Christopher Owens airing his own new material this week, it seems timely that drummer Darren Weiss should release solo material too.

Details on the future are scant, but what we do know is that he is going under the name of Papa, and this track is a belter.

Your free tracks this week are:

Happy People - Dance For Fools

Divine Fits - Would That Not Be Nice (RJD2 Remix)

Sambassadeur - Memories

Adam Green and Binki Shapiro - Here I Am

Papa - Put Me To Work

Some downloads may no longer be available.

This week's Memory Tape comes from Rachel Henderson, who writes...

"Back in the late 80s my friend Hugh did me a mixed tape of songs he liked, that he called 'Now that's what I call wimpy'. Being rather forthright at times, I had scathingly referred to his foppish liking for bands like Prefab Sprout & Steely Dan as wimpy."

"It still looks a wimpy list to me, but it's also a reflection of his very good musical ear, and has some tunes that I now love, so thank you Hugh!"

The playlist is:

Year of the Cat - Al Stewart

Every day is like Sunday - Morrissey

I can see - Martin Stephenson & the Dainties

Talkin Bout a Revolution - Tracy Chapman

Heartland - The The

Luka - Suzanne Vega

Cars & Girls - Prefab Sprout

True Faith - New Order

Doctor Wu - Steely Dan

Goodbye Sunday - Everything but the Girl

Turn Turn Turn - The Byrds

Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

Cities - Talking Heads

Ocean Blue - ABC

Motortown - The Kane Gang

Each & Every One - Everything but the girl

Appetite - Prefab Sprout

Dubvulture (Dub version of subculture) - New Order

Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight - Bob Dylan

Plain Sailing - Tracy Thorn

Hey! Why not send Lauren your Memory Tape. You know it makes sense....

This week's Memory Tape comes from Melz Durston who was lucky enough to have the coolest teacher ever. Mel writes...

"I had a mix tape given to me as a fifteen year old, quite impressionable maths student at school. I diligently followed my teacher's orders one day and went to the local shop (probably Woolies at that time) and purchased a sleek looking single, blank cassette. Arriving in class the next day, I handed it over to my teacher - she told me she would fill it up with music and return it to me by the end of the week (we were off on a family holiday to Florida the following week).

"This is the music that filled my head for the entire two weeks of our holiday (much to the horror of my older sister and younger brother - and my insistence at playing it in the car at every opportunity...)"

Here are the tracks:

Side 1

Gomez - Rhythm & Blues Alibi

Gomez - We Haven't Turned Around

Pavement - Shady Lane

Pavement - Cut Your Hair

Buffalo Tom - Taillights Fade

Wilco - She's A Jar

Wilco - How To Fight Loneliness

Beth Orton - Lives As You Dream

Beth Orton - She Cries Your Name

Side 2

Throwing Muses - Counting Backwards

Throwing Muses - Not Too Soon

Belly - White Belly

Tanya Donelly - Swoon

The Breeders - Doe

The Breeders - Safari

This Mortal Coil - You and Your Sister

Catherine Wheel (feat Tanya Donelly) - Judy Staring At The Sun

Pixies - Debaser

Pixies - Here Comes Your Man

Why not send Lauren your Memory Tape? We just need a tracklist and the story.

This week's guest on Memory Tapes is Alan Hughes whose tape tells the tale of finding one's place in life. He writes...

"I've just started my second year at the University of Surrey studying Maths, and 6 Music is getting me through the days until lectures start again, absolutely love your show!

This list isn't a compilation that I've made for anyone, or that's been made by me. Instead, it's a list of songs about finding one's place in life, something I found out a lot about in my first year at Uni. These are songs that I feel, as I'm sure many others do, were written purely about me and my exact life situation, despite my not having been born for another 40-50 years in the case of some of them. It's a compilation that got me through my first year at Uni, and as such is indelibly associated with all the wonderful, sad and often blurry memories of that time.

I hope you like this slightly eclectic mixture with the common theme mentioned above running through them, would get my year off to a great start were you to do me the honour of playing it."

Here's the tracklisting:

Alabama Shakes - You Ain't Alone (Boys & Girls)

The Band - The Weight (Music From Big Pink)

The Beach Boys - I Know There's An Answer (Pet Sounds)

The Beatles - In My Life (Rubber Soul)

Ben Howard - Old Pine (Every Kingdom)

Bob Dylan - To Ramona (Another Side of Bob Dylan)

Buffalo Springfield - Out Of My Mind (Buffalo Springfield)

Flogging Molly - If I Ever Leave This World Alive (Drunken Lullabies)

Gogol Bordello - Wonderlust King (Super Taranta)

Jeff Buckley - Mama You Been On My Mind (Grace)

John Mayer - Gravity (Continuum)

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now (Clouds)

MGMT - Congratulations (Congratulations)

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night (MTV Unplugged In New York)

The Rolling Stones - Shine A Light (Exile On Main Street)

Tom Waits - Time (Rain Dogs)

Warpaint - Shadows (The Fool)

TECH KNOW HOW: 9TH OCTOBER 2012

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 12:00 UK time, Tuesday, 9 October 2012

Multimedia magazine editor Lucy Hedges joined us in the studio to discuss all things tech, bringing us the latest in gadgets, websites and must-haves. Here is what she talked about today:

Blue Note, iPad, free or subscribe for £1.49 a month

EMI's Blue Note Records delivers an iPad app that gathers songs, artwork, photos, videos and articles about Blue Note's artists and back catalogue - approximately 500 records. This includes its very first sessions in 1939 through to the most recent output by jazz musicians like John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Anita Baker. Trace the label's evolution with an interactive timeline or filter by artist, style, instrument and more. It features track samples in the initial free download, and full streams if you subscribe for £1.49 a month.

Each month Blue Note will highlight an album, artist, article, or a featured playlist compiled by musicians, journalists, and other jazz experts. Apple TV owners can use AirPlay mirroring (listen again to find out what this means) and the slideshow feature. So, you can navigate through the app as an animated slideshow displays original session photos of the artist currently playing through your Apple TV.

Favourite feature: it will take you on a tour of music that contains samples from the Blue Note catalog, placing the original versions alongside the sampled versions by artists such as Beastie Boys, Chemical Brothers, Madonna and Wu-Tang Clan.

Spotify users can also access the app via the desktop app.

Website of the week - WorldCam, www.worldc.am

Worldcam is a new, first of its kind search engine that lets you search Instagram photos by location and a cool way to explore the world through square-shaped, low-res, oversaturated photos. It essentially provides an artistic look at what people are doing all around the world. It's pretty simple: type in any city in the world, then type in any location - parks, company HQs, landmarks, businesses and other public buildings and hit search. Worldcam will display a feed of all the Instagram photos that have been tagged at that location.

Whether it's a good idea to upload lots of tagged photos where you live, work, or that you're not at home is up for debate but one thing is for certain, it's fun to explore.

Gadget of the week - ION Audio Jukebox Dock, www.firebox.com, £100

The makers of cool and unusual app-cessories for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices (iCade Retro Arcade cabinet that transformed your iPad into a retro arcade gaming machine) have created a jukebox dock for your iThings. Its distinctive, authentic, retro styling with wood and neon trim reminds you of the neon Wurlitzer models, but scaled down and much more affordable. The colours change with the music and the iPad or iPhone integrates nicely with the album cover displayed at the front.

If you want it to work with your iPhone 5 you're going to have to buy the lightening connector to allow you to use your new phone with the old iphone connector. Or you can also use a standard 3.5mm audio jack, so your non-Apple MP3 player will work.

MEMORY TAPES: 5TH OCTOBER 2012

Post categories:

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 5 October 2012

This week's guest on Memory Tapes is Jamie Roberts in Manchester whose tape tells the tale of a trip...He writes...

"I'm submitting this not only because it's my last remaining Minidisc, but because it provided an awesome soundtrack to an awesome summer.

"My friend Dave (a long-time 6 Music listener) has always made great mixtapes and CDs and given them as gifts. Sometimes it'll be post-punk, sometimes rockabilly but almost without exception, it's new to me and gives me a new set of bands and singers to follow. He also never provides tracklists, so it took a while to find out who any of the artists were...

"In 2003 I packed up my stuff and went off to work at a summer camp in Pennsylvania, near the Pocono Mountains. It was hectic, inspiring, amazing but very tiring. What little time I had to myself, I tended to pop the earphones in and play one of my many Minidiscs whilst wandering the grounds. One of them was a mixtape made by the aforementioned Dave, scribbled on the disc was the name 'Tonka Speedway' for some reason. Almost everything was fresh to my ears and combined with the new surroundings, it meant that those songs were now an inseparable part of the experience."

Here's the tracklisting:

Coffin for Head of State (pt 2) - Fela Kuti

Ain't Goin' Down That Dirt Road - Howlin' Wolf

Think About Your Troubles - Harry Nilsson
