This week contributor on Memory Tapes is Tim Holmes, who writes...

"C90s played a huge part in my youth - I loved receiving tapes, looking at their (generally hand-made) covers and listening to the contents. Quite often the tracks that I initially disliked turned out to be favourites - something that I regret about being able to listen to almost anything at random (I think Simon Reynolds is spot on writing about the poverty of abundance).

"The tape that I'm proposing for Memory Tapes was made by a band mate, dear friend and music genius, whilst I was in hospital having a severe depression episode. The music really did help my recovery. Rather ominously the tape was volume 1. Thankfully, although I have periods of depression, volume 2 has never been made! The tape was made by Tim Farthing who, after the break up of our band Gutless, has gone on to play with Rob Ellis, Polly Harvey and his brother Roo.

"The tape is knocking on for 20 years old now so a little bit stretched in places due to rewinding, but still an excellent record of what was happening largely under the radar at the time."

If you were in to lo-fi-ish, jangly guitar bands in the early 90s, you're gonna get a little misty eyed over this tracklisting. Look:

Web In Front - Archers of Loaf

Superhero - Smudge

The Bell Foundry - Bivouac

Something for Joey - Mercury Rev

Just Not Moving - Arcwelder

Back On Me - Urge Overkill

Cattle & Cane - Go-Betweens

Away From Me - Moving Targets

Cliche - Sebadoh

Radio - Teenage Fanclub

Missing You - Smudge

My Kimono - Polvo

JC Auto (live) - Sugar

Chicken Head Bone Sucker - Babe The Blue Ox

Deaf As A Bat - The Jesus Lizard

History Lesson Part II - The Minutemen

Straight To You - Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

Days - The Screaming Trees

Bright - God's Eye

Coat - Chokebore

Tex - Guzzard

I Don't Wanna Go Out - X

Your MPFree today sees Paul Banks of Interpol return to his solo work and back to the name of Julian Plenty.

His solo album Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper was released in 2009, and this week he released a new EP entitled Julian Plenti Lives ... This is the second song from it, and there's promise of a second album later this year.

The track Hundreds & Thousands is lifted from Riz's new album 'MICroscope' which is out now. If that wasn't enough, Riz will be on the show next Friday to talk about the album and his acting and stuff AND supporting Wu Tang which is double exciting.

Senior Dredge returns for another round-up of what's new in the world of apps for your smart phone.

Wimbledon (iPhone / Android)

Football is rubbish, anyway... The next fortnight's over-excited and ultimately doomed sporting hopes will come from Andy Murray trying to win Wimbledon. There's an official app for that, too, with news, videos, live commentary and other features.

Song Pop (iPhone / iPad / Android)

No less than Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg says "Song Pop is one of the most fun Facebook games I've played in a while" - it's on iPhone and Android too. It's a music game where you have to guess songs, and then send challenges to friends (you could call it Draw Something for music).

Ocarina 2 (iPhone)

Ocarina was one of the first hit music apps for iPhone, despite being quirky - a simulation of an ancient flute-like wind instrument. Now it has a sequel, which lets you play pan-pipe-esque versions of pop and rock hits to other people around the globe. It could be seen as a novelty, but it's actually very innovative.

Your MPFree this week is completed by a couple of heavy weights. The Orb and Lee Scratch Perry have come together for a whole album's worth of material. The LP will be called The Observer and is set for release on 3rd September through Cooking Vinyl.

Today's MPFree is a taster of that album, and you'll find it below with the rest of the week's downloads, all of which are, obviously, brilliant.

David Byrne & St Vincent - Who

Cat Power - Ruin

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - I'll Come Back 4 U

Purity Ring - Fineshrine

The Orb ft Lee Scratch Perry - Hold Me Upsetter

Some tracks may no longer be available.

This week's Memory Tape comes from Janine Dow who discovered this tape, like a lost relic, whilst renovating the house. Janine writes...

"This is the second mix my now husband did for me when we first met. We met at the Big Chill over a massive mutual appreciation of music, dancing and having fun.

"Within five months we were travelling the world together, a month later I was pregant, 18 months later we were married with our gorgeous son Archie (5 years ago!).

"The mix is pretty electic but it introduced me to some bands I had never heard of and some tracks that now factor amongst my absolute favourites."

Here's the tracklisting:

The Kooks - Ohh La

Altered Images - Happy Birthday

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Rich

Clap your hands and say yeah - Skin of my yellow coloured teeth

This is another taster from the forthcoming debut album 'Shrines' which will be released through 4AD on July 24th. Already excited.

Last week we flagged up a track from Auckland band Opossom for the MPFree; a band that features Kody Nielsen. Well, it's Kody's turn again this week as today's free download comes from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and he's in that band too.

The download comes as part of the Adult Swim series of music giveaways. Adult Swim is an 'adult-oriented cable television network that shares channel space with Cartoon Network' and for some reason, for the last three summers, they've given away a track every week.

As I said, first up is some unreleased Unknown Mortal Orchestra which indicates it'll be worth keeping an eye on this series across the summer.

Tech-head Stuart Dredge takes another run at this week's apps, and reviews the following...

Slash gets appy. Twice!

Former Guns'n'Roses guitarist Slash has a new album on the way, and a pair of new apps to promote it. One is a performance in the studio filmEd with whizzy cameras so you can swoop around in 360 degrees while watching. And the other is an AmpliTube app that, when you connect a real guitar to your iPhone, lets you play with Slash's own amps and pedal settings.

Vjay (iPad)

Last year, an iPad app called djay took the App Store by storm, letting people DJ with two virtual decks. This does the same thing for music videos, letting you mix and mash videos and sound - as good for playing with at home as for VJ sets at parties.

WhoSampled (iPhone)

This app is based on the popular British website which identifies which songs sampled which other songs, with a database of more than 150,000 tracks. It scans your iPhone music collection, then tells you which tracks have samples, lets you play the originals from YouTube, or buy them from iTunes.

Good Monday to you.

Today's MPFree is a track from the collaborative album between David Byrne & St Vincent, set for release in the UK on September 10th.

The album, 'Love This Giant',  has taken over two years to complete and was a fully collaborative project, as Byrne explains: "..sometimes Annie would send me some synthesized versions of brass or guitar riffs and I would arrange them a bit...other times this process would be reversed.."

'Who' is a track from the album that has been made available, you can get it for free below...

This weeks Memory Tapes is a story of a long distance love that stood the test of time thanks(partly)to music, this is Serap Petts...

"Ok so here's the Serap and Mark story.

My friend Lindsay was living in Cyprus for a few years and I went out to visit her in April 2008, just before she was due back to the UK. She had to work on evening, so arranged for Mark to take care of me and cook me dinner. She worked at the pub on Aphrodite Hil, where we now live.

Mark and I were both aged 30 and recently out of long term relationships, so i was not looking for anything, just a date! So we met on the Saturday, and then basically spent the next couple of days together, until I went home on the Tuesday. We got on really well(needless to say!) with a mutual love of The Cure and again, so sent him a text saying it was great to meet someone like him...he replied saying he wanted to have my babies! Idiot!

Anyway, I got home and we were in contact constantly, and he asked me to go back out to Cyprus again to spend more time together. I wasn't sure as by this time Lindsay was back in the UK, so I didn't have any friends in Cyprus, but, after getting a "sign" I booked tickets for June, and went and spent a wonderful week with him - that's when he made this mixed tape.

So then we were in a long distnace relationship and it was really tough - he came to the UK a couple of times, and we met in Rome in September. i then applied to take a 6 month sabbatical from work to come out to Cyprus and see how things went, but they refused my application, so just quit and moved out here in January 2009. I gave most of my possesions away to family and friends, and came out with a suitcase! Luckily it worked out...Mark proposed when we were on hholiday at the top of the Rockefeller Center in New York in March 2011.

It sounds like it all moved quite fast, but it has all felt so totally natural."

A lovely story of friendship and music from Emily Birch..

"I have known one of my best friends, Penny, since we were eleven. Now we are both nearing thirty, it won't be long before we can celebrate 20 years of friendship! Our love of music has followed us over the years, so that now many of my memories of our fun times together are tied up with music.

When Penny and I went to university in Sheffield she only lived five minutes away from me, but we would regularly send each other post. Because we are firm believers that receiving post is GREAT! I would often get a mixtape from her, full of songs we both loved, proper classics, and some new bands I'd never heard of.

Penny is responsible for introducing me to the wonders of Joni Mitchell, Tom McRae and Beth Orton. What a gal! These mixtapes were often decorated beautifully, with great care and attention.

And now the tapes live in the glovebox in my car, which is so old it still has a tape deck. I love listening to these tapes on long journeys, remembering what fun we've had and knowing that there are many more years of great times to be enjoyed with my lovely friend.

I have picked one such tape for your listening pleasure, from March 2004 (yes Penny is an organised mixtape compiler!)".

This might be one of the indiest stories we've ever had on Memory Tapes; the story belongs to Kate Diamond, who writes....

"Back when I was doing my Alevels there was a (now sadly defunct) music magazine called Select. We used to read it on the bus on the way to college. It had a penpal section in the back. My mate replied to one of the ads and started exchanging mix tapes with some Welsh indie lad, so I decided to do the same.

"'Male, 18, Becoming more like Alfie...' the ad started. I replied, we exchanged a few letters, and he sent me my first mix tape. Side A was 'All About Alfie' (songs that represented him) and Side B was 'Songs for a Lady' (or, in my case, a chubby 17 year old with a bad fringe). Track list below.

"This was September 1998. I lived in Leicester, he was in Exeter, 200 miles away. We met for the first time a month later. (via National Express, continuing the Divine Comedy theme!)

"After numerous trips up & down the M5 visiting each other, I finished my Alevels the following summer and moved to Exeter to spend some proper time with him. 6 months later we moved back to Leicester together. We'll have been married for 7 years this July. Our daughter Cecilia is one and a half. I'm a stay at home mum, so we listen to 6Music all day, when we're not at the park."

Here's the ad!:

Here's the tracks:

Side A : All About Alfie

Divine Comedy - Becoming More Like Alfie

David Bowie - The Laughing Gnome

The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin

Boomtown Rats - Rat Trap

Monty Python - Camelot

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper

Roxy Music - Do The Strand

Suede - Film Star

Pulp - Mis-Shapes

Elastica - Waking Up

Shed 7 - You're The Greatest Thing

Blur - You're So Great

The Beatles - Something

Manic Street Preachers - Further Away

David Bowie - Rebel Rebel

Bernard Butler - Not Alone

Sparklehorse - Wish You Were Here
