MEMORY TAPES: 27TH APRIL 2012

Post categories:

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 27 April 2012

This week's Memory Tape comes from Hayley Avron, and it's the tape that keeps on giving...

Hayley writes...

"My memory tape is one that was given to me, rather than one that I made - though I recently passed a copy of it on to a friend, thanks to the wonders of modern technology...

"This tape was sent to me by Graham Kemp - the guitarist in Urusei Yatsura... I can't remember exactly what year it was but judging by the fact that Kung Fu is on it, it was at least 1996 / 1997 (I'd have been about 16).

"I grew up in Tunbridge Wells and my band mates & I made a trip to Maidstone to watch Urusei Yatsura. A short while afterwards, I sent Graham a mix tape. A little while later, he returned the favour, with a tape entitled "summer tape for Hayley, courtesy of Graham Yatsura"

"I lost touch with Graham and I lost touch with the tape, too, until my brother brought a box of old tapes up to me & now I am never without it in my car. Looking back on that time, it was probably a pretty important moment, because it taught me that people in bands are - sometimes - just affable humans, who write people letters and send them mix tapes in the post...

"Recently, I made a copy of it on CD for my friend's birthday. The CD wasn't long enough, so she's missing out on a couple of tracks..."

Here's the tracklisting:

Side 1

Halo Benders - Don't Touch My Bikini

Your MPFree today is from Australian band Husky. Lauren played one of their singles on the show a couple of weeks ago, and now this track is available for download.

It reminds me a little of fellow Australians The Middle East which is no bad thing; especially as The Middle East called time way too soon.

MEMORY TAPES: 20TH APRIL 2012

Post categories:

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 20 April 2012

This week's Memory Tape is a tale of friendship, as told by Siobhan Carroll....

"I'm submitting a memory tape that my rather amazing friend Roman gave me when we were at university. We were next door neighbours and it was amazing. We are very close friends still even though we barely ever see each other, and by complete fluke he ended up one of the first people to find out I was engaged to the man I am marrying in June. We ended up discussing, of course, the wedding playlist. This has since led to me singing "Let's Get Married" to Roman in a crowded restaurant. As you do.

"I have always made mix tapes and CDs and ummed and ahhed over the track listing, cut up my beloved copies of Select and NME to make art work, photocopied pages out of comics and all sorts.

"I also tended to put the story behind every track on the track listing (I'd fallen out of this habit by the time I made them for my fiancé but the song choices tended to speak for themselves).

"Roman was not so good, he failed to provide anything more than a tape in a box, and though the songs were great I tended to need to have him there while I was listening so I could ask what every song was. Not so convenient.

"So I am sending the first mix where he made an effort with anything other than the tunes (which were always amazing)."

The tracks are as follows...

Side One

The Beach Boys - That's Not Me

Interpol - Evil

Soulsavers - Rumblefish

KT Tunstall - Throw Me a Rope

Minnie Ripperton - Reasons

RSL - Wesley Music

The Go! Team - The Power is On

Head Automatica - At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet

South - Colours in Waves

Double U- Walking

The Earlies - Wayward Song

Scout Niblet - Boy

Side Two

Ralph Myers and the Jack Herrer Band - Kill the Habit

Hanne Hukkelberg - Cast Anchor

Hope of the States - Black Dollar Bills

Syreeta Wright - I Love Every Little Thing About You

Outlines - A Matter of Time

The Roots - Web

Little Esther Phillips - Mojo Hanah

Jimmy Smith - Who's Afriad of Virginia Woolf?

RJD2 - Through the Walls

Grand National - Playing in the Distance

Luiz Arruda Paez - Upa Neguinto

You can email Lauren if you'd like to submit your Memory Tape.

MEMORY TAPES: 13TH APRIL 2012

Post categories:

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 13 April 2012

Your Memory Tapes today is a story of music and boys, and is told by the lovely fashion blogger Liberty London Girl aka Sasha Wilkins...

"In my early teens at our all girls school, my sister & I were friends with Annabelle, who knew boys who knew music. And that was that really. Boys & music. Ever a potent cocktail.

"Annabelle didn't just introduce me to The Smiths (lifelong love) & The Cure, she brought into school C90 mix tapes, filled with screechy, stop start recordings of bands like The Pastels, The Weather Prophets, & The Brilliant Corners plus all the bands of the punk era.

"This is my only mixtape remaining, & I still play it in my car's cassette deck, and get as much pleasure from singing along as I did back in 1988. And when people bang on about cheesy mainstream 80s music, I remember that frisson of superiority I had in my teens every time my schoolmates slapped another Bros poster on the common room wall. And thank Annabelle for lifting me into a world of music that has been the soundtrack of my life ever since."

And here's the tracks.....

SIDE ONE:

Weather Prophets. Almost Prayed

The Buzzcocks. Ever Fallen in Love with Someone

The Jasmine Minks. Cut Me Deep

The Smiths. Miserable Lie.

The Undertones. Wrong Way

Primal Scream. All Fall Down

The Pooh Sticks. Sex Head

The Smiths. This Night Has Opened My Eyes

The House Of Love. Christine

The Chesterfields. Two Girls And A Treehouse

The Smiths. Pretty Girls Make Graves

The Brilliant Corners. Jim's Room

SIDE TWO:

The Undertones. My Perfect Cousin

The Wedding Present - This Boy Can Wait

The Undertones. Male Model

Furniture Brilliant Minds

The Buzzcocks. Oh S**t!

The Jazz Butcher: Lot 49

Rodney Allen. Will It Rain Tomorrow

MEMORY TAPES: 6TH APRIL 2012

Post categories:

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:20 UK time, Friday, 6 April 2012

This week's Memory Tape is the bravest Memory Tape of all time!

It comes from Simon in Norfolk who writes....

"I've been pondering whether to send in my 'Memory Tape' as I'm not sure if it would portray me as sad, arrogant, desperate, or all three!

"The story is as follows: At the end of the 90s I found myself back on the 'singles' market. Some of my work colleagues decided that I needed to get back out in to the big wide world and meet new people. This transpired into regular press-ganged trips to the local Chicago's nightclub which is a frightening experience at the best of times.

"And this is the desperate bit, there was a very attractive young lady that I admired from afar who was always with her mates and I could never find the courage to approach her. After a few weeks I decided that the following Friday I would pluck up enough courage and hand her a tape of the 10 tracks from my list. I ingeniously split them in to two sides of a Memorex C60 cassette which I called "My Heart, Your Ears" with side 1 labelled 'Staying In' and side 2 labelled 'Going Out'.

"Anyway, with heart beating fast and legs like jelly I went up to her gave her the cassette that was in an envelope with a note saying "if you enjoy any of these tracks then please give me a call and we can discuss them over dinner". I then disappeared like a phantom in the night....

"Unfortunately she never rang and when I returned to the club the following week she was nowhere to be seen. I did hear a rumour than she had found the love of her life the previous week. I never knew if she had listened to the tape. She obviously had better taste in men than she did in music!!

"I did eventually find the love of my life by using a very cheesy chat up line. We're now happily married and I have coaxed her in to all that is 6 Music."

What. A. Story! The tracks were:

Staying In:

Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil

Going Back by Dusty Springfield

Broken Homes by Tricky (featuring PJ Harvey)

May You Never by John Martyn

Protection by Massive Attack

Going Out:

Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads

Revolution by The Beatles

Gimme Little Sign by Brenton Wood

Pretty Vacant by The Sex Pistols

Is This The Life by Cardiacs

Inspired? Email Lauren your Memory Tape. Your story doesn't have to be as good as this one by the way...

Today's MPFree is a track from the new album from A Place To Bury Strangers.

This will be the New York trio's third LP, and is the follow up to 2009's brilliantly titled Exploding Head. 'Worship' will be out June 26 on Dead Oceans.

It's as noisy as you'd expect, but also a bit more slick and sly and, obviously, terrifying.
