S4 FILES: The Kitchen

Post categories:

Rebecca Denton, Online Exec | 20:00 UK time, Wednesday, 1 February 2012

I’m sure we had one of those washing machines when I was growing up – and look at that kettle!  Tea for how many, Annie? 400?  Have the fans turned up for a brew?
I’ve been playing ‘spot the kitchen stuff we used to own’, I mean seriously, didn’t everyone have that pea green 70’s thermos in their house?
And what’s with the perfume bottle in the kitchen?  Has Heston moved in?
But maybe I’m skirting round the real issue here…
Being Human returns 9pm this Sunday on BBC Three.  4 little sleeps.

  • Comment number 1.

    Am I really the first?

  • Comment number 2.

  • Comment number 3.

So what's for Tea - sorry is Tea is barbaric

  • Comment number 4.

Yes Inch, and I am just behind you ; look at the bouquet in the bin
some congratulations came on wrong...ok let's start
a perfume spray left ver from sacha's days

  • Comment number 5.

Cowboy - Pirate captain - pirate - soldier.

    Annie's Urn

Who didn't want flowers? - Think the card has the word 'Remembrance' on it

    5 containers for tea
is the other one for coffee?

Not a pair a single marigold

    What to make of this.

  • Comment number 6.

Hey Inch! You made it. Hiya Saint and Ewan too!

  • Comment number 7.

Big stain on the floor by the back door.
So glad they've got a plunger for the sink.

  • Comment number 8.

a tea urn, plenty of tea bags, some fancy china plates. Mitchell's old radio wireless, some sherry glasses (Hal? drinking sherry or port? how posh!) plenty of sweets on the right shelf- top right shelf a cowbou, two pirates - yes a pirate theme is starting to show up. Polly the parrot from the first clue... spotted dick? and washing powder 2-in-1...

  • Comment number 9.

  • Comment number 10.

The card on the flowers say "in deepest sympathy"

And that blue perfume bottle started off on Annie's dressing table...

  • Comment number 11.

    Hi all.

7 Sea, I think the stain looks like a boot print. Perhaps a Paul Smith boot-print...There's a lot of dust on the floor too.

  • Comment number 12.

I'm not really thinking of anything particularly big about this. I think it is a representation of characters past, preset and possibly future.

  • Comment number 13.

Oh dear, white flowers in the bin with a 'Sympathy' card, can't read the top part. It's a common bereavement bouquet, maybe from Nina's work? I can't imagine it'd be from her family...maybe George's parents, if he's told them. Otherwise hospital staff.

And throwing them in the bin straight away, pretty sure that'll be George's doing, but it's a normal response considering what we've seen of George in the teasers.

Now need to stop focusing on the flowers and look at the rest of the room ^_^

  • Comment number 14.

If there is now more to this then I'd say it's dusty and a lot of stains because George has a lack of will to do anything other than protect himself. The flowers I agree with others that they are addressed to George because of Nina.

I gotta say it was easier to deduce things for BcH.

  • Comment number 15.

How am I supposed to interact here if my computer takes 10 min to load that picture!? So much frustration going on here..

This just to say that I haven't disappeared, but my internet isn't allowing me to do my BH fan job.
what strikes me in the thumb is the fower bouquet...

How you all doing? I'm missing you.

  • Comment number 16.

Looks like there's something in the oven *peers* And the dish on the burner. One of the burners is turned on, though it doesn't seem to correspond with where the dish is...not that you'd even cook with that dish on a hob.

I think the oven might be on too. But the place is still caked with dust, and one of the glasses on the metal surface has left a mildewy ring...or something.

Lots of tea bags stored up but none of the jars seem to be very empty, has Annie moved on from her tea habit?

...hi, by the way *snort* I sort of just launched straight into the picture there

  • Comment number 17.

There is something on the floor near the "skirting" board! RE:But maybe I’m skirting round the real issue here… From the comment on the pic!!!

  • Comment number 18.

    OK - how about this.
HH has been abandoned for some time...

  • Comment number 19.

sorry ewan, does not look like a soldier, big bow and curls , girl??? no just a big ear- George???

  • Comment number 20.

Ooh, lollipop stick on the floor. And that's all I've got. Not getting anything new from these, just points towards the obvious but then my brain is all CSI'd out

@18 -aquamarine_jo looks like you could be right, either that or they've just not bothered with housekeeping. Maybe they went into hiding after Mitchell's death, then after Nina died, they came back to the only home they had left. The vampires might know about it but at least it's a safer environment for the baby (?)

Agh, can it not just be Sunday already?

  • Comment number 21.

something in the oven, nothing in the washing machine

  • Comment number 22.

The flowers are still fresh though.

  • Comment number 23.

    4 days to go

  • Comment number 24.

if they left the house after Mitchell's death, did they run to a safe haven... in Cornwall to be with George's parents, there met Tom who was also going to visit Cornwall to try and find his own family / pack. Are we sure Eve or Fuzzy was born in Barry?

  • Comment number 25.

and some Fairy liquid, turning its back, bye bye Herrick

  • Comment number 26.

im probably wrong but is there a gun on the tray to the left of the oven?

  • Comment number 27.

i cant think what else it could be.

  • Comment number 28.

@26 I think it's one of those special lighters with a long neck so you can light the hob without getting burned. We used to buy them by the basketful in uni but the gas ran out too quickly.

  • Comment number 29.

Hmmmmm kitchen needs a good clean by the look of it, not very hygenic for raising our Fluffy (not meantioning the dust sniff) lots of tea bags as you'd expect and a random collection of tea pots?
Perfum bottle? attempt to mask the smell of the werewolves from the Vampires?
Pirates again?? definate something going on there
Sweetie jar (I'm amazed that's still got contents remember the Halloween blog with the 3 of them an the pumpkin) beautiful memory
Single marigold (I will get over it one day)
Flowers - rejected sentiment or sympathy ? Guilt? Or Denial? Who were they for ? I have missed this I'm reading your other posts so I can sit here and berate myself for the bits I've missed that you all spotted

  • Comment number 30.

But it could be a gun. It doesn't look like the hob lighters I've seen...mind you it doesn't look like any guns I've seen either so ^_^ who knows

*looks at the time* ... *sigh* I've been perfectly patient for a year but tell me to wait 4 sleeps and I start going stir-crazy

  • Comment number 31.

Got the same storage jar and coffee pot on my shelf in the kitchen. Looks like it all needs a good clean but isn't the 'HOME' picture new? Can't remember seeing that before.

  • Comment number 32.

    @seren fach 4 sleeps! 4 sleeps! 4 sleeps!

    *tries to stop giggling*

  • Comment number 33.

    31. The 'HOME' picture and the toy pirates are all new. If you watch 'Though the Heavens Fall' where Herrick stabs Nina and Mitchell holds off the police, these things aren't there.

Think there's a blood stain on the floor near the skirting board and Miss Denton is directing us there with her little cryptic 'skirting the issue' comment.

  • Comment number 34.

White Lily Means Death Right :/

  • Comment number 35.

The toys on the shelf look new - well they look clean so they must be new. For the babawolf!

  • Comment number 36.

    @Mistress Denton -_- ...that's just cruel ;)

    31. 33. And could be an old (sort of) bloodstain. Nina wasn't stabbed there but then quite a few other people lost their lives in that house thanks to Herrick.

...possibly that's where Nina's water broke?

  • Comment number 37.

    Cooking oil for "Toms bombs"

Mucky mark by the door? poss foot print and Wasnt N stabbed by H in the ?Kitchen (sounds like Cluedo!)

Funny flowers by the pirate figures on top shelf - poss same as in "Splodge"
    doodle pad?

Plenty of egg cups + toast racks (M was a Fan of Toast~)

  • Comment number 38.

White Lilys Means Death Right :/

  • Comment number 39.

33 - Oops BBD - you've already said about the toys. And yup - agree about the blood stain too!

  • Comment number 40.

    39. Thats ok sasha, i'm still no clearer on anything though!

Is it just me or did anyone else think 'village people' when they saw the cowboy and pirate toys?

    Or maybe thats just me!

37 @ lycan, yeah Nina was stabbed in the kitchen, over at the sink though.

  • Comment number 41.

    White Lilies
Lilies often symbolize innocence, purity, and children in many different cultures and religions. White lilies also symbolize sympathy and empathy, and they are often visible at funerals for infants. Send white calla lilies or white stargazer lilies to send a message of love, compassion and kindness to the family of the departed child. When you order your arrangement, you can ask that a small teddy bear or baby lamb (a Christian symbol of patience while suffering) be attached or sent along with the delicate flowers.

In Catholic countries, white lily is de rigueur upon an infant's death. Innocence, chastity and virtue.

  • Comment number 42.

    40. My first thought was village people lol then pirate glad it wasn't just me

  • Comment number 43.

Did someone leave the gas on?

  • Comment number 44.

I just bought a chef figurine pizza cutter that looks just like that chef figurine basting brush:)

  • Comment number 45.

    Oh well spotted Fleem!

  • Comment number 46.

Shove up on that sofa Ewan. Thanks Inch! ooh look Inch was first.

Hello kerry! Hello Alison! Hello ShoePigeon! Welcome to the blog! *waving*

Hiya Fleem - sorry - I kept missing you before - hope you had a great trip to Boston and erm.. thanks for the jellyfish salad... stings a bit...

Lycan is right - it was the first thing I noticed - really large container of oil. Not sure if that was there before.

10 - Blimey Aqua - that's incredible that you knew that about the perfume bottle. But I agree - I'm beginning to think that no-one has been around HH for a while. So if it was abandoned.... then... where did they go?

It's like playing 'spot the difference' this, isn't it? But my very first impression when I looked at the picture was that something wasn't quite right - and I'm not talking about the flowers in the bin. Something is missing, perhaps?

  • Comment number 47.

43 - On the back of your comment Fleem - the washing machine is part way into a cycle - unless the staging crew haven't quite set these two appliances to off by accident?

If the house has been empty for a while - as I said earlier - the flowers are still fresh so obviously haven't been there long.

    Evening Manc!

  • Comment number 48.

What's that grey thing underneath the marigold glove? This magnifying glass is no good - I'll have to get the binoculars.

Haha! Just seen BadDog saying those little pirate figures looked like 'village people' - I thought 'Captain Pugwash' - they are the sort of thing that you used to get inside 'brand of' cornflakes or rice-crispies.

Rebecca - we had a bin Just. Like. That.

  • Comment number 49.

Hello bloggers! It's been a while but it's great to be back! Hello to all of the old guard and welcome to the newbies.

Great to see the blogs so active again and anticipation so high for Sunday, can't wait. I was a big supporter of Nina last year, so was devastated to hear we were losing her too. Basically, I am going to cry on Sunday. I am preparing for this already!

The clues and prequels are all really interesting though and I look forward to over analysing and over investing in the series all over again this year.

I was the person that posted episode reviews last year and we had the Series 3 Fan Awards. I fully intend to do the same again, I've written a preview here https://bit.ly/A5yfYm but hope folks will enjoy reading. I am still so appreciative of the fact anyone read last year, truly I am. Hope it is ok with the blog team for me to post links, if not its no problem - just let me know and I will stick to retweeting!

Happy blogging everyone - eek four more sleeps!

  • Comment number 50.

    48. Hi Manc. The grey thing under the marigold is actually green and it's just another tea-towel I'm afraid.

Who are the jar of haribo's for? Tom?

  • Comment number 51.

ooh ooh ooh.........is everyone and everything coming back now?? great! :D can't wait, so exciting.....

  • Comment number 52.

Hiya Sasha - just catching up here- (just been next door and read the last 100 comments or so - was hilarious IMHO)

Hello Zoltan! Welcome to the blog. hahaha

Tea-pots! I can't see a tea-pot. I'll have to have a re-watch of the scene where the police come into HH to get Mitchell in the kitchen - and maybe a look at the extra scene on the DVD of S3 - the one where Annie make breakfast, the morning after the night before.

  • Comment number 53.

    50. Sorry for the use of a brand name, because this is a bbc site i should say other jelly sweets are available!

I'm not sure but isn't the wood panelling around the wall new too?

  • Comment number 54.

Pretty much happy as a wolf in the woods tonight.

I think, if I may give everyone a steer, you should look to the obvious, while being aware of the subtle. Answers will come quickly, maybe even on Sunday night.

    (just got whipped)

  • Comment number 55.

54 - Hi Rebecca - don't you get to go home? Hope you're eating ok.

    53 - ROFL!

52 - Manc, it was such good fun today - I had a right laugh anyway!

  • Comment number 56.

Hellooo again April! Lovely to see you! And Riannonymous too!

    53 - Wood pannelling - not sure - can't remember.

These stills look to me like they might be the opening shots of Ep 1 - if they are significant in some way - then how else? And what will come next? *whispers* the bedrooms? Eeek.

But the hour is late and the moon doth grow as we speak. I'm off.

    Night all. Night Mods.

  • Comment number 57.

Night Manc, the hour is indeed late but i'm like a dog with a bone. Think i'll be here a wee while longer.

Now being drawn to the perfume bottle, thinking it could belong to an Old One, especially with the atomiser attached. Isn't an atomiser a feature of older perfume bottles?

Don't see the significance though. Not something you'd normally find in a kitchen.

  • Comment number 58.

Night Manc. It is an old style of bottle BBD but you can still get them now. But aqua was saying earlier in this blog that the blue bottle used to be in Annie's bedroom. ??? No idea why it is now in the kitchen.

  • Comment number 59.

    58 @ sasha.

Must've missed that comment from aqua. Still, like you said, why is it in the kitchen?

    More questions than answers unfortunately!

  • Comment number 60.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST holding a pic of kitchen background with annie in front: mitchell radio/toaster were there and on mitchell arrest, the lamp shade seems to be different?

  • Comment number 61.

Could the fact that on the drainer it looks as if theres only two glasses draining, two mugs, two cereal/soup bowls, two side plates and over by the black dish on the stove top another two cups. So only two people living here at the moment?

  • Comment number 62.

as for ''you should look to the obvious''

same urn, same height a plenty of cooking oil... running out of magnifiers https://filmreviewonline.com/wp-content/gallery/being-human-season-3/232716.jpg

and this time no bin bag in the bin

  • Comment number 63.

61 - Well that could mean three *people* then because Annie doesn't eat/drink. So the dishes must be there from when Nina was still alive?

  • Comment number 64.

Hi Saint - didn't see you there! Gosh what a difference in the picture at 62 - you can actually see the work surface gleeming! There is a bit of a chicken theme going on in the new picture.

  • Comment number 65.

Right I'm off - night bloggers!

  • Comment number 66.

    Night Sasha

    62 @ SAINT

Good find there Saint, looks like more has been added than taken away.

The same big black pot is there, the radio, the heater on the top shelf, or is it a bug zapper?

I think we need to concentrate on the new items, therein lie the clues.

  • Comment number 67.

Hello I've had a thought (be patient it doesn't happen often) but doesn't that splodge by the skirting look a bit like a foot print and if it is why only one and why heading towards a wall... almost as if there might have been some kind of DOOR someone went through...? Can't wait till Sunday even if I will be missing M.

  • Comment number 68.

    67. good pont Jo C,
we had a hint bout the skirting board too and foot print is next to skirting board, hmmmm.... (draws wistfully on pipe and strokes furry chin) does this print match Annies uggy boots? I think not....

wheres Sherlock when we need him?

  • Comment number 69.

(Long time lurker here. Hi guys!)

I think I've stared at the picture too long. I'm sure I can see a face in the top right of the oven doors (the equivalent of seeing Jesus on a slice of toast, probs) and I'm starting to ponder whether the egg cups (2 plain, one fallen, one marked versus 3 shiny ones) mean something (Annie, George, Mitchell and Nina versus Annie, Tom and Hal, maybe?).

Clearly there's a reason why I usually lurk instead of sharing the crazy with you all :P

  • Comment number 70.

Hey, Caro I've also been lurking, for a couple of series' and also BcH... Hopefully we don't seem too insane but OH GOD I CAN TOTALLY SEE THE FACE (grey, small, far top right corner? but it looks like a reflection of something in the glass, so i'll dismiss it)

Whoever's still there - George and Annie I'll assume because of the flowers - left in a hurry; quickly pulling off gloves and dropping teatowel/still wet glasses? (reason for wet stains on surface), not turning off gas/oven, etc...
Just don't know the reason. If they did, the flowers are confusing, because they seem like a more recent addition, including an earlier comment about how there are two of everything, maybe the reason the washing up is unfinished is because Nina was stabbed by the sink? - probably not though.
I agree that the toys are possibly due to the new arrival, but the stain on the floor if it is Herricks, the direction away from the kitchen makes sense, if he was unsteady the footfall might have faced the wall...? but there's only ONE footprint, which is the another thing which doesn't make sense to me.
Maybe someone spilt their tea as they were hurriedly leaving.

  • Comment number 71.

I'm so excited and I'm not gonna hide it! From the looks of the tea caddies Annie hasn't made tea for some time, maybe since Mitchell. The whole kitchen needs a good clean. In the Radio Times (other tv listings magazines are available) there is quite a huge spoiler that could be linked to this picture.

    I need a TARDIS NOW!

  • Comment number 72.

Also I cannot take my mind off the amount of egg cups and egg related paraphenalia. Maybe George is keeping chickens for when he needs a midnight snack.

  • Comment number 73.

hello all1 new clues, oh my!

    3. @ewan - channeling Kemp are we? hmmmm...

    5. @ewan - think not a soldier, but a female nurse? With blond hair. or a woman with a handbag?

@Lycan - nice catch on the flowers!

so much dust - perhaps aqua is right and HH has been abandoned for a while...or at least neglected...

why would Annie's perfume bottle be in the kitchen?

  • Comment number 74.

    5. @SunnyFLA and ewan, it's a female flight attendant, holding a pull-along suitcase.

  • Comment number 75.

@FarawayEvey - you could be right. Uniform is right....
so cowboy, pirate, Indian, flight attendant.....the flight attendant is odd toy out.

  • Comment number 76.

#74 Yes, you're right - a flight attendant, but not an Indian. Looks like a footballer but why the headband/sweatband? Fitness coach?
The more I look at the picture, the more I want to get out the Flash - ugh - it needs to be cleaner with a baby in the house!

  • Comment number 77.

76 - Morning Gingernut! Morning Bloggers! Morning Rebecca!

I agree with your take on the toys. Last night before going to bed I googled (as you do) to see if there was a connection between a cowboy, a pirate, a jogger and air hostess (not pc I know). It did come up with some cowboy song sites, etc. but nothing that made much sense.

This morning I have a headache. I wonder why?

  • Comment number 78.

Never fear Im on it............1 crazy theory coming right up..!!!

  • Comment number 79.

Morning Caradoc! Holds breath and waits..................

  • Comment number 80.

And exhales! I'm choking here..............need to go - back in an hour to read (hopefully) one crazy theory! :-)

  • Comment number 81.

    @mistress denton

the sequence is comboy-pirate but again pirate with head band, breeches with loose trousers bare legs, stripped top, a real ship mate, beard holding in his left hand a sabre. @ Inch, sorry, but it is a sabre, yeah, you know I am a sword fight addict... then we have the lovely flight attendant with uniform, hat, and handbag in R hand.

  • Comment number 82.

two pirates, two ship mates, two mates, two friends
by the way look at the way the fringe of the trousers legs is uneven
it is a pair of pirates

hence we have 2 friends- hal and tom, a nice prim and proper lady- annie and a cowboy with a bandana around his neck- tea towel? and a checkered shirt as our mr weasley? is HH now really an hostel for supernaturals

  • Comment number 83.

    @sasha, @caradoc

sorry , did not see you, being so full of stating the obvious regarding the 4 figures
the lady carries a bag, she carries something, something is in the bag, somethinge we do not know about, she carries it, Fuzzy and the baby, unknown powers?

  • Comment number 84.

Hi Saint! On closer inspection, the ship's mate toy you describe is in fact looking like that to me now. The thing in his left hand - well okay his cutlass then - well I thought that was a button on the wall heater behind them. Also hadn't noticed the torn trouser leg - but had noticed the beard - very manicured looking for a pirate ;-) Well done you. Still don't get what it means though.

  • Comment number 85.

I guess I just havent got my crazy head on today as I got nada !!!
I did notice pirate with sabre (cutlass..??) seems to be holding his chest as he's waving his weapon at our Air hostess(ooo eeerrr)......Is this sybolising a female character leaving (nina - we know that though..??)

  • Comment number 86.

    Oh God! my eyes hurt!!!!!

    Roll on Sunday!

  • Comment number 87.

OK so this is a bit out there - don't suppose Mr Benn was ever an air hostess?

  • Comment number 88.

Morning All! Morning Mods! Morning Rebecca!

Jen! Lovely to see you here!. Well, we always said how great the set-dressers were on Being Human and now we've got the chance to appreciate the craft that goes into dressing a set - where they got all that stuff from - I've no idea.

Was the HOME sign there before?

  • Comment number 89.

    88 - Morning Manc. No that's new.

  • Comment number 90.

Morning Sasha! 87 - ROFL! Mr Benn! Oh dear, I think I'll need oxygen!

  • Comment number 91.

There is the saying "Home is where the heart is" and at the same time, isn't the kitchen considered the heart of a household?

  • Comment number 92.

Morning Ruby. So if wasn't there before, who put the HOME sign up? And when?
(just here to make a sandwich - I'm off to fanfic to read Misty's new chapter) x

  • Comment number 93.

home poster on one side - 4 friends holding hnads on the other side - the new fab four?3 tea/coffee/chocolate pots? with a larger coffee pots - pot for two?
why a fancy parlour lamp in a kitchen, where it can get dirty???
fancy oils, for HAL, gourmet room mate?
2 glasses, 3 mugs, 4 chicken themes boxes on the chimney shelf with 4 coasters
running out of 'the obvious' as for skirting
what is that green band on the door on the left and the light between the boards...

  • Comment number 94.

93 - should've gone to specsavers! I can't see a green band or a light between the boards (if I'm honest don't know what boards you mean Saint).

  • Comment number 95.

@sasha if you look at the door with the strips when you open and enlarge you can see a strip which is green has strangely fallen over the other stripes??? can't believe I am actually looking at a wall papered door? would surely not happen in real life, can't abide stripes on wallpapers

  • Comment number 96.

Hal has got OCD.........They wont need to stake him he'll have a heart attack when he sees that kitchen !!!!

  • Comment number 97.

Morning! It's been a busy night/early morning already. Was watching 'Longest Day' and 'Daddy Ghoul' last night and there are quite a lot of kitchen scenes in that and the first thing that struck me was that in those shots, the kitchen looked more like that of a B&B, lots of catering packs of ketchup, utensils to cater for large groups of people whereas this picture somehow looks more 'homely' (dirty, yes) and not unlike the shared kitchens that I have had to endure over the years. Not sure what that means, though.
The roasting tin was there last year, but on the mantelpiece, not on the hob.
Another thought I had about the flowers: on the rare occassions I get them, I have sometimes had to put them in a bin (with water) because I didn't have a vase big enough for them. So perhaps they haven't necessarily been thrown away, just didn't have anywhere else to put them in water?
    Lots to ponder indeed...

  • Comment number 98.

    96 - ROFL

95 - Away for another lookie

  • Comment number 99.

95 - Saint - it's one of those plastic curtain things so it will be ribbons of plastic making up a curtain you can walk through without having to open.

  • Comment number 100.

That kitchen could really do with an update couldn't it? Trip to Ikea, even...
Morning to Saint, Sasha, Manc, Ruby - just typing your review up now...got Sunny's to read next...oh and hi and well done to Inch - Ewan, Lord Wolfie, were you on a tea-break? ;)
