Toby Whithouse Being Human creator

It's true what they say about Being Human creator Toby Whithouse. Not only is he handsome, charming and quite experimental when it comes to his beard, he also loves talking to you guys, the Being Human fans.

Toby wants your questions and will answer as many as he can in person right here on the blog. So, if you've got a query about the show put it in the comments below and Toby will sift through his favourites and answer them in his next blog post.

But what to ask about? Maybe the potential vamp/ghost romance between Annie and Mitchell? Or the possible future children of George and Nina? How about the badass new werewolves Tom and McNair? Or the kinky vamp antics of Richard and Emma?

There's also purgatory, Lia, Adam, our new online web series Becoming Human and all the general gubbins about what it's like being the writer of a hit TV show.

Fire away.

Oh more question time thinking cap at the ready

  • Comment number 2.

    Where is Herrick?!

  • Comment number 3.

What other supernatural creatures would you like to pop up in BH? We;ve had ghost, werewolves & Vamps and oh a zombie! LOVE the werewolf transformations by the way & Thanks for more of them in Season 3! Booooo Vampires get all the press haha

  • Comment number 4.

Loving the new series. When are we going to see the beautiful Mitchell with his shirt off again? ;)

  • Comment number 5.

    (4) Agreed!! More naked Mitchell =P Poor George & Nina, they always have their kit off haha

  • Comment number 6.

    4-5 I third that!

  • Comment number 7.

If Annie is dead and has to be in the same cloths as when she died. Why does she never have the same cloths?
Also. Why when Annie goes to her grave in series one, a different grave to where her mum visits in series two?

  • Comment number 8.

How long do I have to wait to see season 3 episodes in the u.s.?

  • Comment number 9.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 10.

My mum had a decent question (got her hooked on the show around 2 weeks ago - went through two seasons in that time in order to catch up)

What happens when werewolves age? Pensioners transforming every month in their homes? Would the werewolf form itself age too?

  • Comment number 11.

Did you have a plan for the Mitchell and Annie romance in the back of your mind from the very beginning of the show? Or is it something that sort of just came about as the show went?

  • Comment number 12.

Will this be the last series of Being Human?

  • Comment number 13.

Are there going to be puppies on the way? I really hope so, they would be so cute! But would you need to buy nappies or puppy leads?

  • Comment number 14.

loving the new series of being human, can you tell me if nina is pregnant and will herrick appear in this series????

  • Comment number 15.

With how the Series 3 started, what's going on with Mitchell and Annie. Finally realizing an attraction to one another?

  • Comment number 16.

can i at least be an extra in it... it annoys me being human is now local and ive been to half the places where it gets filmed lmao
    [Personal details removed by Moderator]

  • Comment number 17.

Will the characters of the becoming human web series make an appearance in being human?

  • Comment number 18.

Will there be a series 4 and if so can Aidan be in it or will his involvement with The Hobbit rule him out?

  • Comment number 19.

Will we find out anything more about what happens through the door? Is it possible for anyone else to return?
Loving the new series by the way!

  • Comment number 20.

    more Lia?

  • Comment number 21.

Hello! Eek, I need to think of a question! I think most of my queries have been answered in one interview or another....but here goes....

Toby: will you consider giving yourself a little cameo in series 4?....or are you already in series 3?????

    Sorry, not very interesting...!!

  • Comment number 22.

I'm a little confused at the ending of series 2
Why didn't Daisy use her blood to save Ivan and not Herrick? The way she and Ivan spoke about Mitchell and Herrick's relationship, I would've thought she didn't like him?

  • Comment number 23.

What do you think of the US/Canada version?

  • Comment number 24.

I'd like to know why you're killing off Mitchell? He's one of the most interesting characters and he's the eye candy! :(

I love Mitchell because his story is so true to someone fighting an addiction. He wants to be normal and he wants to fit in but he's under the spell of this powerful craving. It's great to watch. Aidan Turner is a fantastic actor. Why kill him off? :(

  • Comment number 25.

I know it's early yet in series 3 but many of us are speculating about series 4. With AT in NZ is the door still open for a series 4? Will he maybe be written into a separate storyline so he can film at a different time? BTW can't wait to see series 3 in the US.

  • Comment number 26.

Now from the last two years we already have many questions answered.

George and Nina if conceived when human the baby would be human but hey were changed in episode one so from that there is a big Spoilers issue so not on children.

Recommendations yes last year let the right one in - Bareback (read it not just because it is good but the werewolf love interests name)

When do we get to see Herrick would seem a little like spoilers.

What would you chose - no too oblivious and no way would there be an answer everyone would like.

  • Comment number 27.

    So The real question.

Lord Toby Are there more than one type of werewolf? - Not breeds as we have been told McNair and Tom are different breeds.
    Types or Levels.
George stated he had no trouble digesting raw meat from the night before even from his first transformation to Tully who stated that he threw up the first few times.
In the CenSSA Lab Lloyd notes that Nina's results were different to the other werewolves.
Or is the answer something we should Debate?

  • Comment number 28.

are we going to hear anything more of bernie and his mother? i have a feeing her throat may be ripped out by now.plus im hoping for a bit more daisy and/or herrick, they were odd-liked it! any puppies on the horizon??? too many questions but i do love BH xxxx

  • Comment number 29.

    #10 Great question!!

  • Comment number 30.

I think you've created something magical with BH and its been years since TV has almost made me wet my pants in anticipation to the weekly episodes!

    This is my question

Who's feet would I have to kiss just to...
    a) be an extra in the show or b) have my band play in the background!!!!???

  • Comment number 31.

Would a baby werewolf turn in to a human at the full moon?

  • Comment number 32.

What's going on with Herrick? He turned up at the very end of series 2 but we are yet to see him in series 3? Will he be coming back at any point?

  • Comment number 33.

Joooos: That's a fab question! Toby's already been in one episode of Goodnight Sweetheart, and looked verrrry nice in it too!

    Here goes:

Q: If there is going to be a Season 4, and I feel there will be, are there any plans to bring back any of the 'old' characters like Daisy or Cara? Or haven't you got that far yet? (and to echo Joooos' question, it would be great to see you in a cameo in S4)!

  • Comment number 34.

10 - Yes that is a good one do they slow or age quicker at the end.

  • Comment number 35.

    Hi Toby.

Im a big fan of Being Human and have written some music inspired by the series. I would love you to hear what I've done. would you be interested in listening?

  • Comment number 36.

I'm a BIG Annie/Mitchell fan! We already know that there is going to be some kind of love story for them this series, but is there going to be a happy ending for them????? I couldn't bare it if it all goes wrong!! Thats probably too big a spoiler to reveal but is there anything you can tell us??? :D

  • Comment number 37.

Hi and well done on an excellent and quintessential British hit!

Q: What happened to the actors from the pilot episode?

Q: Will the characters evolve their 'powers'?

Many thanks and once again well.

  • Comment number 38.

I think I might have asked this last series but don't remember getting an an answer.

Do any werewolves like being werewolves? Or to be more exact to this series, do Tom and MacNair like being werewolves? How do they feel about it? Not that I don't love George and Nina, but sometimes it seems like vampires have all the fun...

Also, how old is MacNair? His talk of how old people are weird nowadays had me thinking...

  • Comment number 39.

on behalf of @xxxcorrixxx on twitter what is your favorite cheese?

i'll warn you she's not all there

  • Comment number 40.

    8 - part 2 question
February the 19th at 9/8 central

  • Comment number 41.

Off-topic, I wonder now TwinA17 is? Her twin boys were used as the ghost baby (have to be more than one..rules is rules) in S2. She posted on here a couple of times...thought I'd mention it.

  • Comment number 42.

Is there anything at all that you can do to get this show back on in the US? Please? I may have to go George on someone if I can't watch this show!!!

  • Comment number 43.

As a writer, is there any thought on what will happen if the show is lucky enough to run for ages and ages given that Annie and Mitchell aren't technically able to age on account of their deadness(!). Hypothetically speaking, do you think it would ever be possible to bring in new characters for us to fall in love with or would you just call it a day and give us a whole new show to obsess over?!

  • Comment number 44.

Oh, and I echo Anglo's question (33)- What's happened to Daisy (apart from Amy Manson going off to film Outcasts)? And can we have Ivan and Seth back somehow? If we can only have either Ivan or Seth back, then can we have Seth please? I know there are lots of people want to see him again!

  • Comment number 45.

    Oh what to ask?

Are we going to see how powerful Annie really is having returned from purgatory? Is she more than just a ghost?

  • Comment number 46.

Could they run a bar now?

  • Comment number 47.

    (44) Seth would be good to have back! And so would Carl though don't think we'll be seeing him now that he's in South America...shame!

And we do indeed need more shirt-off action from the vampires, especially the Irish chappie...what's his name again?...

  • Comment number 48.

Hello lovely Mr Whithouse...loving series 3 so far by the way..so glad that the humour is at the forefront even with such dramatic goings-on.

My first question..why did you lose your beard? ..all the bloggers thought it made you look even more sexy and we thought that with the beards and checked shirts you, Barry and Aidan were about to form a new group...possibly becoming a new type 5 in series 3...

  • Comment number 49.

Out of all your 'Being Human' characters, who do you think is the most 'human' and why?

  • Comment number 50.

    49 ooooh good question.

  • Comment number 51.

Good one 45 - Toby my question is Annie related too. The focus of the previous series' has been on vampires and werewolves really, are you going to go deeper in to the spirit world in the next series (if we get one, and I'm crossing everything that we do)? There is so much more to be explored in relation to Annie and what she has the potential to become, I cannot wait to see what you have in store for her!
Also, at the risk of being a big stinky baby belle - THANK YOU SO MUCH!! For your imagination, your casting skills (they are ALL amazing), and the sheer passion you obviously have for Being Human. There has never been a UK t.v show like this before and I dont think there will be again, xxx

  • Comment number 52.

    (48) Yes, Dorina, Joooos thinks he should have a cameo in S4...he could come back as a Type 5. What would that be, do you think?

  • Comment number 53.

    Hi there Toby. Huge fan.

One thing has always fascinated me. Are there other supernatural creatures in the being human universe other than Ghosts (and the living dead), Werewolves, and Vampires - Such as faeries (Brothers Grimm style) or magic users?

  • Comment number 54.

Thanks Toby for being such an indulgent Creator as to answer us mere humans' questions.

Mine: Have you ever taken your characters to such dark places you've worried the fans would never love them or laugh with them again? Obviously I'm thinking of Mitchell's rampage on the Box Tunnel 20 and Annie's sentencing to Hell. But maybe something coming up for George or Nina too?

  • Comment number 55.

    Ooh, great question DGTTD (45)!

I love your question too Dorina -type 5's are sex gods then?! Bring them on!

  • Comment number 56.

Any chance of ever seeing Gilbert again? I know that he passed on to the other side, but he was such a wonderful character, and it would be fantastic to see him again, in some form.

  • Comment number 57.

this is a technical question, but i wonder: how is it that mitchell can get a job in the age of pictures on employee badges when his image can't be captured?

and just to put it out there, i'm not the type of person to nitpick about minute details. i care much more about the overall story, but i was just curious as to whether there's an answer to this or not.

  • Comment number 58.

Hi Toby. First of all, loving the potential Annie/Mitchell romance. My question is about Annie, I loved her poltergeist awakening in series one, is there more to come and has the stint in purgatory enhanced or diminished those skills?

  • Comment number 59.

You are all awesome, but what I want to know, is how do you come up with such amazing plotlines?

  • Comment number 60.

    Good evening everyone......Mr Whitehouse...Hello :O)

I have to read through everyone's questions so that I dont ask the same one..lol..

I don't think I will ask what if this, or what if that, or will this or that happen...we just need to watch wait and see! I mean,if we know whats going to happen thats going to ruin the plot.mmm? :O)

lol Maybe Mr Whithouse,Mr pilling and Aidan were going to be cast as sexy Lumberjacks in a future series..:OD 'Timbaaaaaaaaaa!' I suppose Mr Whithouse just wanted to shave Dorina!

I was wondering one thing, why Annie was on her way to hell when she had never been bad? I have a feeling when Lia told Annie when she returned back through the right door, there would be celebrations...mmmm,because she would return with Mitchell?

It will be sad to say goodbye to Mitchell, but,I suppose that was Aidan's idea in some ways as he wishes to continue with other acting projects? All the very best to Aidan. and to all the wonderful BH cast...

Finally....Thank you Mr Whithouse for giving us BH...where would we be without it

  • Comment number 61.

Why does Mitchell "feel" it when Annie gets pulled through the door? Did the powers that be know he'd go after her?

The series is about being human even if you have some fundamental problem - but the way things are going does suggest that sometimes it might be impossible to reconcile the two successfully ..? Is this because of the supernatural element to the show (ie. being a vampire, or a ghost - pretty extreme problem) or is this a continuation of the metaphor about human imperfection?

Assuming that Mitchell will be killed off or packed off at the end of this season ... is there a way for him to come back? Is it likely that he will, or does "The Hobbit" mean probably not? (realise this is too spoilery but had to ask anyway!)

  • Comment number 62.

Will there ever be more Being Human merchandise released? We've only had 3 books - I am very keen on action figures. please?

  • Comment number 63.

    Hello Toby!

Thank you for Adam answering last Sunday's blog discussion about whether Mitchell smells. My question is:

If Mitchell and Annie get it together, will Annie improve Mitchell's personal hygiene? I'm thinking washing his clothes, bedsheets, explaining the concept of showers, shampoo, etc. Perhaps explaining that the scratch and sniff in a magazine is not as effective as deoderant bought in a shop? Is this a possibility?

  • Comment number 64.

Here is a less than sensible question

You say you haven't watched Buffy or Angel do you think if you did it could get Joss Whedon to watch being human in a sort of if I do you do sort of thing?

  • Comment number 65.

Hi, I live outside of Chicago and absolutely love your show, as do many of my friends. Would you pretty pretty pretty please broadcast it at the same time as you do in your country? We have this american version that can't hold a candle to the already awesome and perfectly cast BBC version. There is nothing like the original. Your show is art and art is meant to be shared with all the world! Keep up the amazing work. Thanks for all that you do, Lisa

  • Comment number 66.

How come Adam was able to bite his mum and dad without them turning into vampires?

  • Comment number 67.

First and foremostly, thanks for making Being Human- the new series seems fantastic, loved episode one in Purgatory. Just a little question thats been niggling at me since the end of series 2. What happened to Lucy? Yes, I know she got staked by Kemp, but then Annie grabbed Kemp though The Door that was meant for Lucy's passing. So, would this mean that Lucy never actually passed over? Could there be a restless Professor Jagget spirit? Or am I just turning into a BH geek?!

  • Comment number 68.

    Forgot to ask:

As a creator, how emotionally invested do you get in the characters and the story, with what happens to them and how they evolve over the course of the series?

Also wanted to say thanks!! for creating such a marvellous, compassionate, macabre and funny world, and such loveable and human characters to follow through it! =)

  • Comment number 69.

Is there going to be a series 4? Please let's us know thanks x

  • Comment number 70.

Where runs the thin line of a good show going to hell after a couple of seasons?

  • Comment number 71.

xcell toby!! cant wait for the next. i thought when u put nina and george intogether was amazing so is there going to be a future nanny in ghost annie [as she cant be hurt..?] to wear-baby ? as the family vibe seems to be increasing.
and for the love of all amazing do not change channels PLEASE dont go eles where all the best left and now i cling to u lol :) keep up the good work guys and girls

  • Comment number 72.

    Couple questions for you.
First of all, there's a few supernatural creatures kicking around, but what about people who can do magic? I remember the episode with Tully, and he had all these tattoo's, some looked a little occulty; an attempt to stop him transforming? Or would that be a little too much to bring in?

Second, loved the whole idea of Mitchell's own Purgatory, and being forced to confront his past. Far better than how it was played out in Buffy and Angel (for me anyway). Does this mean that Mitchell will be visited by other people he's killed, such as the corroner and the policeman from series 2 (thought Ian Puleston-Davies was brilliant as his character).

Third, can vampires become ghosts? I can see Ivan haunting Kate Bush.

And finally, will it get revealed why vampires have it in so much for werewolves? Is there a specific reason, or just that they're immoral?

And thanks for writing such a brilliant show. Why it's not on BBC1 or 2 is beyond me.

  • Comment number 73.

Oh good god. Have they shrunk the size of Terry's Chocolate Orange bars?!

It looks tiny! I feel like I've been fleeced. I knew I should have bought the whole ruddy orange.

Sorry... that wasn't a question for Toby... unless he happens to know...

  • Comment number 74.

Oh and I no this Isnt a question but I love the show :P

  • Comment number 75.

Hello, hope you're having a good day. Am very glad that this excellent programme is back on, as I'm sure alot of people would agree. As I'm mainly house bound it's one of the few things that I really look forward to, it also brightens up my week & am so glad that Annie is back in it. The main thing I wanted to know is, do you have any plans to turn the programme into books? I also wanted to know if you will be writing any more for Doctor Who?
The last thing I wanted to know is will there be any up coming competitions, where the winner(s) could have a walk on part or a signed copy of the script. Keep up the good work.

  • Comment number 76.

haha WR I love you that was brillian [73] also I thought of you in that scene with Adam answering your question regarding Mitchell

  • Comment number 77.

Same sort of thing as others here...

its often been mentioned that annie is particularly powerful - are we going to see more of this or has that changed since she was in purgatory? will her powers be restored to her?

and the link between annie/mitchell? he 'felt' her go through the door?

also finally - why would lia encourage annie to go for mitchell when she has just set mitchells death (as far as we know) - is annie being punished as well? or is it to punish mitchell further?

LOVE the show, thank you so much :)

  • Comment number 78.

Thats lady in next weeks BH looks scary!! lol

  • Comment number 79.

oh and just to add i love robson green [ were extream fishing here] wow what a choice toby you did it again i know he will do us proud pat on the back bravo and thanku

  • Comment number 80.

    Warwickshire Rose, you are hilarious!
In my mind Mitchell does not smell bad at all. He smells beautiful!! It's all in my head though!

  • Comment number 81.

Mitchell just has his own aroma.....sexiness!mmmmmmmmm lol he does dab on samples from magazines though..lol

  • Comment number 82.

How many episodes is Sasha cast for? and will she try to eat anyone? lol

  • Comment number 83.

Toby, thank you so much for FINALLY following through with a Mitchell and Annie romance! Fans have been waiting to see them get together since series 1. So it's a joy to finally see it happen on the screen! And we are thrilled!

QUESTION: Toby, when you initially cast Aidan Turner and Lenora Crichlow, did you always plan to create a possible romantic relationship for Mitchell/Annie? Or was it more of a result of their amazing chemistry? And, I'm curious, would it be possible for Mitchell/Annie to ever have a child together? Or because she is a ghost, it's not possible for her at all?

Thank you so much for writing such an awesome show. And I'm really enjoying the romantic development for Mitchell/Annie.

  • Comment number 84.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 85.

76 - I'm glad because I was thinking of you and the others on the blog that day too! It was the best bit of the whole episode. Squeaking with excitement!

80/81 - well in my head he smells rather intoxicating too, but I am trying to be realistic here. It helps me overcome the distraction. I suspect he may even smell of cigarettes, which for me would see me heading for the door. I still maintain that I have a rule against Irish. (Sorry Irishmen who are nice. I've only been misused by your countrymen and that means there's a rule now.)

  • Comment number 86.

I've decided to see if I can answer some of the questions just for fun and only some

7 - the basic design and colour stay the same but the changes are there to show her mood.

22 - the police had Ivan's body I'm assuming they also disposed of it - cremation or something like that.

57 - old photos colourised or just old photo's that's what he used in season 1

60 - the feeling on the blog was either fear of her strenght or as a trap to get Mitchell to give him the prophecy - but I would like to know which.

66 - They have to drink from him before they die to get turned

those are the ones I think I can answer

apart from All those in the USA the answer is February the 19th at 9/8 central on BBC America

  • Comment number 87.

You are blessed with a tremendously gifted main cast (kudos to your casting skills!).
As the series progresses, are you influenced to write specifically to their strengths - feeling confident that you can challenge them eg. Russell can handle pathos as well as humour, Aidan can step up to some pretty heavy stuff in s2 etc. - or does the story always come first?

  • Comment number 88.

Okay, so there are far too many questions spinning around in my head to ask something direct, especially as they'll probably be too spoilerish, so first I just wanted to say thank you for this show. To all the cast and crew, and of course a big thank you to you, this show has given me something to look forward to these past few years when things have been quite difficult. I've always been one to pick up and cling to new shows, but this is the only one which has truly gripped me, left me guessing until the end and made me love each of the characters as much as the last.

I could go on but I'll stop here before I get into my stride of praising.

My question though is about the original music. I know there were murmurings on the blog about a possible release of the beautiful scores made especially for Being Human, any update on this?

    Thank you again, utter thanks.

Oh and thanks as well for the Annie/Mitchell romance this season, even if I fear it may be short-lived and angsted to within an inch of its undead-life, I've been hoping for it from the first episode.

  • Comment number 89.

    Hello! Toby,

Want to say, I just LOVE the series! PLEASE, is there going to be a 4th, 5th and beyond (lol) seasons of the show? PLEASE SAY YES!!!

  • Comment number 90.

Here's my ..hopefully...more sensible question for Toby.

You've shown us your Being Human vision of purgatory where past deeds are visited and forms filled...what is your vision of Hell, and Heaven, in the Being Human world and what dictates where you end up? (you see I'm bit puzzled that Annie who led a decent life as far as we know was destined for Hell...or was this just to tempt Mitchell there in a hurry?.)

Would love for you to say a little more about 'the danger within' in series 3 because I'm beginning to think that the danger is one of our awesome foursome...but I guess that would be too spoiler related

  • Comment number 91.

84 - that is not very nice. If you don't like it, don't watch! It's not necessary to be outwardly mean to anyone in life. You don't see me on Doctor Who blogs moaning about their show.

Look, in any series there are going to be episodes people like less than others - I was like that on Sunday - but that doesn't depreciate the rest of the series.

I am really sorry you are feeling so disillusioned though and send you a hug. And a recommendation that you stick to the series one and two boxsets! =(

  • Comment number 92.

I love the BBC series, but the US series on SYFY just doesn't cut it. I'll try to get into it, but I really want the BBC ones to return!!

  • Comment number 93.

What did happen with Kemp at the end of series 2 when he was pulled through the door by Annie, where there is no form there is no way?

What would have happened if Adam's father had stayed on in this world like Annie?

I will be boring but i want to know as for question 17, will Becoming Human make another mini appearance in one of the episodes of Being human, just because i love it so much?

And i thought of this the other day, what do you think would have been Adam's reaction had he seen the pink house on the corner in Bristol -apart from the moan about the long drive there?

  • Comment number 94.

Reading the above comments, I think one of my previous posted questions has already been asked!

Question: Toby, would it be possible for Mitchell and Annie to ever have a child together?

And again, THANK YOU, for putting Mitchell and Annie together! LOVE them. I think Aidan and Lenora have AMAZING chemistry together that shines in every scene!!! And Mitchell/Annie fans are so excited!

  • Comment number 95.

Oh sorry, but if Annie could smell Mitchell like Adam could, do you think she would change her mind about the crush on him? lol

  • Comment number 96.

91 - "Outwardly mean"? I wasn't personally insulting at any point, I was just pointing a paltry few of this series' innumerable shortcomings. Telling me to stop watching the show is no contribution at all really, I loved the first two series and I cherish my box set and I want to be proved one. The one thing I personally can't stand is people who pass judgement without experiencing something, so I will continue watching for now, hoping...

  • Comment number 97.

Since the show is "Being Human", might we see flashbacks of events from before the characters are 'turned'? It would be great to see who they wanted to be, where they were heading before they become supernaturals.

96 - I am glad you will carry on watching and I really hope that it gets better for you! I'm sorry, I'm not good at criticism, it always upsets me and I naturally get in mode for protecting the other party. I commend your determination to work through the anxieties. I'm a big wuss. I can't do negativity, sorry. Still sending you a big hug!

See, I can't intentionally do mean. I want everyone to love one another. Useless.

VampGhostFan....not all BH fans want an Annie and Mitchell hook up...speaking for myself I don't think any of the foursome can really have 'happy endings'...they would then be 'normal' and close to 'being human' and for me that would be the end of the show. I think Toby is teasing with this one...I expect pain along the way for poor old Annie!...and sad to say I suspect that the same will ultimately be true for George and Nina
