TV news graphics: a new look

There’s a new look to our TV news graphics from today - designed to make them clearer and easier to read.

The graphics make use of the BBC’s own typeface, Reith, which was developed several years ago, and can already be seen on other BBC channels and services.

The changes will be seen on the BBC News Channel, Breakfast, BBC One bulletins, Nations and English Regions news, and on our international channel, BBC World News. They bring these services in line with designs on BBC News Online, BBC Weather, and the BBC Sport website which first started using the Reith typeface in 2017.

We last updated our graphics on our news channels and bulletins in 2012 when we moved to our current home in Broadcasting House, and began broadcasting in HD. Since then the way our audiences consume the news has changed immeasurably, with more people watching BBC News on connected televisions, tablets and mobiles.

The BBC Reith typeface has been designed for that digital age - especially on mobiles and tablets - and that’s why BBC News is now changing its graphics to make the most of that improved usability, readability and accessibility.

We’ve tested the new designs with audience and user groups - who found them clearer and easier to read. They also liked the way we’ve simplified the range of styles and colours we use in our graphics to make them more accessible.

Helping our audiences understand the news, through clear and compelling storytelling, is at the heart of everything we do at BBC News. We live in an increasingly complex world, and it’s clear our viewers and readers really appreciate the role visual design can play in helping them to understand developing stories and give clarity to the issues.

We’re introducing the new graphics throughout this week - and we hope the changes we’ve made will mean that everybody will find it easier to engage with BBC News channels and programmes, whether they’re watching on their TVs, computers or mobile devices.
