We have been working with the Sports Personality
team since early in the summer. They were keen to mark the BBC’s arrival in Salford with much more than just the television show on the night. They wanted a range of live broadcast shows and our help in creating off air activities to make sure the “Celebrate Sport
” event could be enjoyed by thousands, rather than hundreds of people.
always proves a big draw – in fact two years ago on the Sports Personality weekend in Sheffield, we had 4000 ticket applications in less than 12 hours for an 800-seater show. So, Colin and the team will be doing another outside broadcast show this year from the studio block at Media City in the studio that usually provides the home for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. That is one of four live shows.
For the first time, we are going to try a 606
phone-in show with a live audience of 300. Mark Chapman will present that with Jason Roberts with the aim of half the contributions coming from the studio listeners and the other half from phone callers across the UK.
Mark will be back on 19 December for the Monday Night Football Club, and then John Inverdale takes to the stage on 22 December for a “backstage” show of the TV event. I think this will be a lot of fun with guests including Matt Dawson, Clare Balding and Michael Vaughan. The big winners from the TV show will come through to meet the audience and this programme will be on air until 11pm.
Last year when we were in Newcastle for our 5 live Septemberfest event, thousands of people came to see us in our igloo to try their hand at football commentary or presenting. Both proved really popular, particular the latter where people from all ages could get the chance to read a news or sports bulletin in our mini studio. So we are re-creating this as part of the range of activities on offer in Celebrate Sport. We hope to see some of you in Salford.
If you are not able to join us, all four of the 5 live audience shows are also live on the radio. In addition, there is a Meet the Question of Sport team event, which we are recording and playing the highlights of on Christmas day. I will be back in a couple of weeks to highlight some of the special programmes being made by both BBC producers and independent production companies for our Christmas and New Year’s schedule.
