7 Sony Gold Awards for 5 live
The one occasion every year which brings the whole radio industry together is the Sony Radio Academy Awards. One night in May is a moment to reflect on the highs of the previous year and to remember why radio matters so much to people because of its ability to connect, entertain and inform.
Last night 5 live had a brilliant night, winning more awards than any other radio station as we picked up seven golds, plus three silvers and a bronze. I'm especially pleased that the awards were spread right across 5 live's output. Here's a full list of all the winners.
In the news categories, we won both Breaking News (for Drive's coverage of the formation of the coalition) and Best News and Current Affairs Programme, which was won by Victoria Derbyshire. Victoria also picked up silvers in both the Speech Programme and Speech Broadcaster categories.
5 live Breakfast once again won the Best Breakfast programme award - a wonderful note to mark the ending of Nicky and Shelagh's on-air partnership. Our coverage last September of the Ryder Cup was the Best Live Event coverage whilst Fighting Talk presented by Colin Murray won the Sports Programme category.
5 live dominated the Speech Radio Personality of the Year section. It was great to see Danny Baker there to pick up the gold (he's back on air with us a week on Saturday) whilst Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty received the silver and Stephen Nolan was awarded the bronze for his work for both us and Radio Ulster.
And the evening got off to a great start when Robbie Savage collected the Rising Star award - the only award chosen by popular vote.
The other awards are chosen by the Sony judges, an independent collection of people who either work in radio or simply love it. Once again they have recognised in spades the quality and range of what 5 live does every day. Every presenter who picked up an award last night made a point of both mentioning the team they work with but also you, our audience. It's not just for listening but also for being so much a part of what we do every day. Those contributions are a huge part of what makes 5 live special.
