5 live: Sony nominations
It's always a tense time, waiting to find out what's caught the attention of the judges and is in the running for one of those much coveted Sony Golds. I'm delighted that this year 5 live has a total of 16 nominations - that's more in a single year than any of us can remember. You can see the full list of nominations on the Sony Radio Academy Awards website.
Each nomination is a great achievement and a recognition of the work of everyone involved. It's great to see such a wide range across everything 5 live does.
We're nominated for breaking news with our coverage of the formation of the Coalition on Drive presented by Peter Allen and Aasmah Mir. Live sport is prominent with the nomination for our Ryder Cup coverage and the list also includes everything from a single interview with Elton John to our on-air trails for the World Cup, voiced by Stuart Hall.
Particularly eye-catching are the three nominations for Victoria Derbyshire, showing how consistently outstanding her programme has been over the past year. There are also three chances to win for 5 live Breakfast with Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty, which is nominated as best Breakfast Programme and for its World Cup coverage as well as Nicky and Shelagh themselves for Speech Radio Personality. It's especially pleasing to see two nominations for Danny Baker as he continues his recovery.
These awards matter because they involve the entire UK radio industry and the judges are some of the most experienced people working in radio mixed with a whole range of prominent people united by their interest in what radio does.
We won't find out who has actually won until the ceremony on Monday 9th May. So until then we'll enjoy the pleasure of the nominations and we'll definitely be keeping our fingers crossed.
