I thought you'd like to see as well as hear Simon's announcement that he's taking over the Radio 2 drivetime slot later in the year. Mark Kermode came over to the 5 live studios to join Simon for the announcement. It is, after all, a big day for them both. Reactions on the blogs, messageboards and Twitter have been coming thick and fast - and have been overwhelmingly positive about Simon's contribution to the 5 live mix. A small sample from Twitter:

Chris_Alfred I am sad to hear Simon Mayo is leaving Radio 5 Live for radio 2 but at least wittertainment will still happen.
ian9outof10 Simon Mayo is an excellent choice for Radio 2 drive and I'm thrilled that Mayo/Kermode gets an extended Friday show on 5Live. Well done BBC!
ashawsk Simon Mayo is leaving 5 live. End of an era? - Yes. But the film reviews will continue. Black armband required for a short time only then.
clarissa79 Simon Mayo to present Radio 2 Drivetime > more air time for @wittertainment, that makes me happy.
ninadouglas What will we do without Simon Mayo and his brilliant books programme on 5 live?

I'll round up further reactions to Simon's move in a later post. In the meantime, the comments on Adrian Van Klaveren's post from earlier this afternoon make for a good read.

Only good things to come I reckon. I mean, who else gets fed up with Wittertainment taking second place to live Cricket analysis or when someone has dropped their barley water on court one? The Beeb have an absolute golden duo here and they know it. About time they had a chance to stretch their legs out and break away from the confines of sport and traffic every 5 minutes. Hoorah!

a perfect replacement for mayo would be a burka wearing female, then all of those individuals who are against the hijab/niqab etc can constantly call / write to complain about the lack of communication because they cant see the presenters facial expressions.

seriously though why does 5live not present a more holistic view of islam/muslims rather than the largely negative and hostile one that is presented by breakfast/victorias show. it is an issue of attitude and it appears the environment is not conducive to move away from a negative stereotyping. surely 5live should be trying to create the balance rather than unquestioningly accepting the baseline briefings from govt or other supporting affiliates.

i have to add the snippets that are predictably pro afghan war .. largely through soldiers / bereaved families and govt briefings - are noticeably on the increase along with the plugs for the christmas trade via guests .

Is the real reason you're going to radio 2 to avoid a move to Salford on sea?

Really enjoyed Simon Mayo yesterday and the bit about restless leg. I am a suffferer or I was. Quite surprised that the GP seemed to dismiss how important magnesium is for restless leg. I suffer from this a great deal and recently came across an article in the BMJ saying that magnesium deficiency deserves a special mention, as its present in about a quarter of the patients suffering from restless leg. I use a magnesium oil spray a lot,so I can spray it on my skin exactly where the discomfort is and it really helps ease my symptoms and it only takes a few minutes to work.
