What does the heart do?

Find out about how blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the human body

What is the heart?

  • The heart is a muscle. It pumps blood around the body, all day and all night.

Why is blood important?

  • Blood picks up and carries oxygen (from the lungs) and nutrients (from the small intestine) to every part of your body.

  • It also picks up waste and helps to get rid of it from the body.

Blood is also part of the immune system. White blood cells fight off infections to keep us healthy.
